Book The Effects of Paired Reading on the Reading Fluency and Attitude of At risk Third Graders

Download or read book The Effects of Paired Reading on the Reading Fluency and Attitude of At risk Third Graders written by Elizabeth A. Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to research the effects of using paired reading at home on the reading fluency and attitude toward reading of at-risk third grade students. After attending a training session with the researcher at Taylor Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, six third graders and their parents were asked to implement the paired reading strategy at home for at least fifteen minutes four days a week for six weeks during the Fall trimester of the 2007-2008 school year. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills Assessment (DIBELS), DIBELS Probes, and the Basic Reading Inventory were used as pretests and posttests. Students and parents were given surveys at the beginning and the end of the treatment period to measure changes in perceptions and attitudes. Findings indicated participation in paired reading at home improved student achievement in reading fluency and various aspects of perception and attitude toward reading in both parents and students.

Book The Effects of Repeated Readings on Third Grade Students Reading Achievement and Attitudes

Download or read book The Effects of Repeated Readings on Third Grade Students Reading Achievement and Attitudes written by Tennille Kasper-Scheriff and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of a reading strategy, repeated readings, on third grade students' reading achievement and attitudes. One hundred sixteen third grade students as members of six classrooms in one elementary school participated in this 10 week study. Using a quasi-experimental pretest posttest design, students' mean reading scores and mean reading attitude scores were evaluated. The Measures of Academic Progress test was used to collect data on students' reading achievement (Northwest Evaluation Association, 2009), and student attitudes toward reading were measured by the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey (ERAS) (McKenna & Kear, 1990). Data was analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between observed differences in mean scores of treatment and control groups. No significant differences were found for students receiving the repeated readings intervention compared to students who did not receive treatment. Additionally, data analysis from the ERAS revealed no significant differences in students' mean attitude reading scores between the control and experimental groups.

Book Handbook of Early Literacy Research

Download or read book Handbook of Early Literacy Research written by Susan B. Neuman and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of early literacy has seen significant recent advances in theory, research, and practice. These volumes bring together leading authorities to report on current findings, integrate insights from different disciplinary perspectives, and explore ways to provide children with the strongest possible literacy foundations in the first 6 years of life. The Handbook first addresses broad questions about the nature of emergent literacy, summarizing current knowledge on cognitive pathways, biological underpinnings, and the importance of cultural contexts. Chapters in subsequent sections examine various strands of knowledge and skills that emerge as children become literate, as well as the role played by experiences with peers and families. Particular attention is devoted to the challenges involved in making schools work for all children, including members of linguistic and ethnic minority groups and children living in poverty. Finally, approaches to instruction, assessment, and early intervention are described, and up-to-date research on their effectiveness is presented.

Book The Impact of a Balanced Reading Basal on Third grade Reading Achievement

Download or read book The Impact of a Balanced Reading Basal on Third grade Reading Achievement written by Windy Dorsey and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A student’s ability to acquire reading skills plays a critical role in ensuring a student’s success in life. Therefore, students reading below grade level can be cause for alarm. Students who attended third grade in a Title I school district demonstrated a lack of proficiency in balanced reading based on formative and summative assessments. As a result, the district adopted a reading basal program in 2013; however, the effectiveness of the program on third-grade students’ achievement had not been examined. This convergent parallel mixed-method study sought to determine if the reading program increased third-grade student achievement. The research questions of the study examined the reading achievement scores of third-grade students and the effectiveness of McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders. Significant differences were observed when a paired sample t test measured progress on the Reading 3D composite, Text Reading Comprehension, and North Carolina Beginning of Grade/North Carolina End of Grade from the beginning of the year to the end of year. Responses from a teacher survey and interviews provided descriptive quantitative and qualitative data that revealed teacher perceptions of McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders basal program and the impact on student achievement. Qualitative responses were reviewed and analyzed for common themes. The overall findings suggest that McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders had a positive effect on student reading achievement. The findings of this study can be used to help educators make data-driven decisions about utilization of balanced reading programs in the classroom.
