Book Effects of Alternatives to Clearcutting on Invertebrate and Organic Detritus Transport from Headwaters in Southeastern Alaska

Download or read book Effects of Alternatives to Clearcutting on Invertebrate and Organic Detritus Transport from Headwaters in Southeastern Alaska written by Jake Musslewhite and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examined the transport of invertebrates and coarse organic detritus from headwater streams draining timber harvest units in a selective timber harvesting study, alternatives to clearcutting (ATC) in southeastern Alaska. Transport in 17 small streams (mean measured discharge range: 1.2 to 14.6 L/s) was sampled with 250- m-mesh drift nets in spring, summer, and fall near Hanus Bay at an ATC installation on Catherine and Baranof Islands. Samples were taken before (1996) and after (1999, 2000) nine timber harvesting treatments were applied. Invertebrate and organic detritus drift densities and community composition were used to assess treatment effects. A comparison of drift densities before and after treatment showed year-to-year differences comparable to natural variation at other sites in this study, but no clear relationship to intensity or type of timber harvest treatments. Natural variation in drift densities prevented detection of any potential timber harvesting effects. Coefficients of variation showed transport was most variable among streams, followed by seasons and then days. A trend toward an increase in the proportion of true flies (Diptera) and a decrease in the proportion of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) was seen in more intensive treatments. Although transport rates were extremely variable, a mean of 220 mg invertebrate dry mass and 18 g detritus per stream per day was being transported downstream. The transport of this material suggests that headwaters are potential source areas of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and detritus, linking upland ecosystems with habitats commonly fish bearing) lower in the catchment.

Book Balancing Ecosystem Values

Download or read book Balancing Ecosystem Values written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balancing Ecosystem Values: Innovative Experiments for Sustainable Forestry is a compendium of more than 40 contributions from Asia, Europe, and North America. The theme encompasses experiments implemented at an operational scale to test ecological, social, or economic responses to silvicultural treatments designed to balance the complex set of objectives currently targeted in sustainable forest management. Several invited and plenary papers emphasize the variety of outcomes demanded by the public, as well as the essential role that these long-term studies will play in allowing natural resource managers to make better-informed, science-based decisions. A broad spectrum of silvicultural treatments and systems are covered, as are simulation runs with different types of models and discussion about design challenges for scaling up from stands to landscapes. Diverse forest ecosystems, stand structures and plant, animal, and fungal species are also considered. The conference included 2 days in the field where participants saw several types of the comprehensive field experiments firsthand. The conference concluded with a critique from state, private, and public land managers.

Book Clearcutting Affects Stream Chemistry in the White Mountains of New Hampshire

Download or read book Clearcutting Affects Stream Chemistry in the White Mountains of New Hampshire written by C. Wayne Martin and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Clearcutting of northern hardwood forests in New Hampshire resulted in accelerated loss of dissolved nutrients to streams similar to that shown in experimental studies at Hubbard Brook. Stream water samples were collected during 4 years from nine watersheds that had been completely clearcut and from five nearby reference watersheds that were uncut. Differences in stream chemistry between clearcut and reference watersheds were greatest during the second year after cutting. During the 4 years of the study, specific conductance of the reference streams ranged from 20 to 30 [mu] S/cm; average pH ranged from 5.0 to 5.7; nitrate ranged from less than 0.1 to about 4.0 mg/l; calcium from 1.0 to 3.0 mg/l; ammonium from less than 0.01 to 0.05 mg/l; magnesium from 0.2 to 0.8 mg/l; sodium from 0.6 to 1.6 mg/l; potassium from 0.1 to 0.7 mg/l; sulfate from 3.0 to 8.0 mg/l; and chloride from 0.3 to 0.6 mg/l. During the second year after clearcutting, specific conductance of streams draining the cuts ranged from 22 to 68 [mu] S/cm; average pH ranged from 5.1 to 6.0; nitrate ranged from 1.4 to 27.3 mg/l; calcium from 1.4 to 6.7 (ng/l; ammonium from less than 0.01 to 0.05 mg/l; magnesium from 0.3 to 1.4 mg/l; sodium from 0.8 to 3.0 mg/l; potassium from 0.1 to 1.5 mg/l; sulfate from 2.1 to 6.3 mg/l; and chloride from 0.4 to 0.9 mg/l. During the first year after cutting, streams from the cuts were more acidic than those from the reference streams; however, they were less acidic by the end of the second year. Concentrations of most ions in streams from clearcuts approached reference levels by the end of the fourth year after clearcutting, though streams from clearcuts remained less acidic by nearly a whole pH unit, sulfate remained depressed, and potassium remained elevated. During the 4 years following cutting, stream exports from cut sites exceeded those from reference sites by 57 kg/ha for inorganic nitrogen, 61 kg/ha for calcium, and 15 kg/ha for potassium.S3.
