Book Effects of Aerial Spraying of Forestry Herbicides on Aquatic Ecosystems Part III Bioassay of the Effect of Glyphosate on Carbon Fixation by Intact Periphyton Communities

Download or read book Effects of Aerial Spraying of Forestry Herbicides on Aquatic Ecosystems Part III Bioassay of the Effect of Glyphosate on Carbon Fixation by Intact Periphyton Communities written by D. J. Brown, (Dennis James) and published by Water Standards and Studies Section. This book was released on 1987 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a three-year study examining potential effects of herbicide use in forest management on adjacent aquatic ecosystems, artificial substrate (acrylic rods) were positioned in shallow water within six experimental study ponds near Pine Falls during late summer. The substrata were permitted to colonize with periphytic algae for a period of 41 to 50 days, after which samples were collected and exposed in the laboratory to concentrations of glyphosate (added as the commerical formulation Roundup) ranging from 0 to 1800 mg/L. Carbon fixation rates during the first four hours after herbicide treatment were measured, and the change in rate relative to untreated controls was used to assess the short-term effects of glyphosate on algal photosynthesis.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a three-year study examining some potential effects ofherbicide use in forest management on adjacent aquatic ecosystems, baselinephysical and chemical characteristics of 6 small ponds located in the southeastern boreal forest near Pine Falls, Manitoba were monitored in 1985. Surficial sediment samples were collected from each pondand were analyzed for calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, sulphate, carbonate, nitrate, phosphate, salinity, pH and organic matter content. Surface water samples were collected at weekly intervalsand were analyzed for true colour, pH, conductivity, alkalinity and concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, chloride, fluoride, sulphate, ammonia-nitrogen, nitrate/nitrite-nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, silica anddissolved organic carbon. Measurements of water transparency, air and surfacewater temperature and water depth at a fixed location in each pond were alsomade weekly. Climatic datawere collected from a station in the PineFalls townsite.

Book Effects of Aerial Spraying of Forestry Herbicides on Aquatic Ecosystems Part V

Download or read book Effects of Aerial Spraying of Forestry Herbicides on Aquatic Ecosystems Part V written by Geoffrey B. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a long-term study established to examine the response of forest aquatic vegetation to glyphosate applications at eight small ponds in the south-eastern boreal forest region of Manitoba. The ponds were monitored over 1985-1993, and were grouped into four pairs on the basis of similarities in water chemistry. One pond of each pair was designated as a control while the other received aerial applications of glyphosate. Baseline physical, chemical, and vegetation features of each site were recorded prior to glyphosate application. Following the herbicide treatment, a regular sampling schedule was established to monitor the chemical and physical variables at each site. In addition, weather conditions were monitored during each growing season over the whole study area. Results presented relate to whether glyphosate application affected the water chemistry of the ponds studied.

Book Forestry Pesticide Aerial Spraying

Download or read book Forestry Pesticide Aerial Spraying written by J.J. Picot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced to the technical aspects of forestry aerial spraying in the mid-1970's, we were immediately impressed by the complexity of the process of delivering pesticide to foliage. At that time, there was a vigorous public debate in New Brunswick about the ecological and public h~alth impacts of the annual spray program for the control of defoliation of spruce and fir trees by the spruce budworm. The forest industry is important to the province and changes to the established procedures of budworm control could have major economic implications. A rational debate required reliable information about the mechanics of the spraying process. There was a need to supply missing information as to required pesticide application rates, atomizer performance, off-target drift and deposit, and the effects of weather and aircraft operating factors. We were invited to initiate a research program in this domain by New Brunswick forest management officials, and what follows in this book is a logical and quantitative description of the overall process based on our own research and that of others over the intervening years. After a short introduction to aerial spraying, we begin (Chapter 2) by describing forest stands in terms of their interaction with suspended atmospheric particulate material carried along by the wind and susceptible to deposition on foliage. We introduce foliage simulators and their use in measuring the deposit of sprayed pesticide on foliage, the "biological interface" between pest and pesticide.
