Book excerpt: This mixed-methods study explores the effects of adaptive leadership on faculty engagement in online learning in higher education. The higher education environment is rapidly changing due to students seeking more flexible and online learning opportunities. This change which was already developing in response to the 2025 enrollment cliff (when the number of high-school graduates in the United States will drop significantly) and has only been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of adaptive leadership on faculty engagement in online education at institutions of higher education. This study was conducted through a pragmatic paradigm with a constructivist lens .The conceptual framework for this research study was built upon a thorough review of the literature, examining three research streams: (a) faculty perception of online learning, (b) change management, and (b) adaptive leadership. Seventy-seven faculty from four colleges at a large university in the northeast completed a survey and then eight faculty participated in follow-up interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS to look at descriptive and inferential statistics. The qualitative data were analyzed using NVivo for open and axial coding. The research revealed five results: (a) the climate of a school/college effects perception of and participation in online learning; (b) faculty want to be acknowledged and rewarded for participation in online learning; (c) Institutions of Higher Education looking to move online need to secure faculty buy-in and provide faculty support (d) faculty's perception of online learning has shifted over time, and exposure to online and remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic shifted perceptions in a positive way; and (e) faculty's perception of online learning is not affected by participation in professional development or by working with an instructional designer; however, instructional design support was highly valued. Based on these results, five recommendations were made for institutions wishing to move into online learning: (a) faculty should decide to opt-in to online teaching; (b) protect faculty time; (c) recognize faculty contributions (d) provide support to faculty; (e) invest in instructional designers.

Alternative to prevailing leadership theories that heavily focus on individualistic and hierarchical considerations, adaptive leadership focuses on connection and results of actions for challenges that do not have a clear-cut solution. These influences may be more significant for female-identifying individuals who historically have been disenfranchised in leadership experiences. This narrative inquiry examines the internalization of and application of adaptive leadership for female-identifying professionals in higher education. The inquiry includes an examination of how these study participants have deployed adaptive leadership competencies, of how this theory influenced their perception of themselves and their abilities, and of their reflections on how they best learned and continue to utilize adaptive leadership in their leadership practice. A greater understanding of how adaptive leadership is applied and the effects on females using this approach can increase awareness of how to apply this leadership theory to higher education curriculum. This research provides opportunities to consider how to best continue developing female leaders earlier in their careers to shift the scales of disparity regarding female representation in leadership roles in higher education.

Students’ engagement in schools has been a growing concern for academic institutes especially in today’s time where online learning is prominent. This study explores instructor’s perspective on the different methods and techniques used in synchronized online courses to increase student engagement at a graduate level. The theoretical lens of Connectivism Theory (Downes, 2006; Siemens, 2004) and Engagement Theory (Kearsley & Schneiderman, 1999) will be explored to understand the relationship found between the methods used in teaching and student engagement while employing the conceptual framework of the theory of selfregulated learning (Harris & Graham, 1999; Schraw, Crippen, & Hartley, 2006; Shunk, 1996). The sample consists of seven faculty members teaching graduate level online courses at a private independent university located in suburban New York City. The findings suggest that instructional methods, course modification, faculty’s role, and technology increase student’s engagement in a synchronized online class. Student engagement increases enrollment, retention, and graduation rate – all important aspects of a successful learning institute, therefore it is important to understand what aspects of teaching increase student engagement to create a successful learning environment.
