Book Effects of Acculturation and Gender on Mexican American Teens Perceptions of Dating Violence Prevention Programs

Download or read book Effects of Acculturation and Gender on Mexican American Teens Perceptions of Dating Violence Prevention Programs written by Bianca Altamirano and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dating violence in ethnic minority populations is an understudied phenomenon and little attention has been paid to the experiences of Mexican American youth; less research has been done on how those experiences alter perceptions and acceptance of participation in prevention programs. This study advances knowledge on how Mexican American adolescents view dating violence prevention programs and how cultural beliefs and values may hinder or encourage effective participation. Focus groups (N = 9) were form with Mexican American youth aged 15-17 years separated by gender and acculturation status (Mexican Oriented/Bicultural/Anglo Oriented), as determined previously by acculturation scores measured by the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans (ARMSA; 0 or below = Mexican Oriented, 0-1 = Bicultural, 1 or above = Anglo Oriented). Several themes emerged throughout the focus group discussions that were derived from culturally-based needs. Mexican American adolescents made recommendations for program development (e.g., a broad curriculum beyond the topic of dating violence) and delivery (e.g., barriers to participation, the implications of peer involvement) within the context of their cultural values and needs. Low acculturated and bicultural teens identified specific cultural needs and their relevance within a dating violence prevention program. However, across all groups, adolescents felt that the needs of Mexican American youth were similar to other youth in regards to dating violence prevention programs. Implications for how social work can best design and implement prevention programs for Mexican American adolescents are discussed.

Book An Examination of the Mediating Relations Between Traditional Mexican Cultural Values and MMPI 2 Scales L K and 5 with Mexican Americans

Download or read book An Examination of the Mediating Relations Between Traditional Mexican Cultural Values and MMPI 2 Scales L K and 5 with Mexican Americans written by Julie Ann Lopez and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to explore the mediating relations of specific Mexican cultural values (i.e., familism, respect, religion, and traditional gender roles) and examine their role on MMPI-2 Scales L, K, and 5 among an adult Mexican American, while also accounting for the roles of acculturation and demographic variables. A total of 205 Mexican Americans from various communities across Washington State was recruited. Using hard paper, self-report surveys, data were collected about one's adherence to the four traditional Mexican cultural values- familism, respect, religion, and traditional gender roles, and one's overall performance on MMPI-2 Scales L, K, and 5. The results showed that religion and respect were the strongest mediators between acculturation/enculturation and Scale L scores. Specifically, more acculturated (vs. enculturated) Mexican Americans are less (vs. more) likely to endorse traditional religious and respect values, which in turn, resulted in lower (vs. higher) likelihood of guarded responding as shown in Scale L. Surprisingly, all four cultural values failed to mediate the associations between acculturation/enculturation and Scale K and Scale 5 scores. In terms of demographic variables, generation status, education level, and family household income predicted Scale L scores through acculturation and enculturation. These three demographic variables also predicted Scale K scores through acculturation. Specifically, Mexican Americans with higher (vs. lower) generation status or obtaining higher (vs. lower) education or household income are more likely to align with American culture than Mexican culture, which in turn, results in having lower (vs. higher) likelihood of guarded responding as shown in Scales L or K. Lastly, females scored higher than males on Scale 5, while both females and males scored similarly on Scales L and K. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Book Mexican American Psychology

Download or read book Mexican American Psychology written by Mario A. Tovar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing in-depth coverage of the Mexican American population from social, cultural, and psychological (clinical) perspectives, this book promotes the understanding of cultural practices and sociological characteristics of this important ethnic group. There are now more than 32 million Mexican Americans living in the United States. As a result, the odds that a clinician will work with a member of this population—one of the fastest-growing minority groups in the United States—is extremely high. Understanding the culture, society, psyche, acculturation, assimilation, and linguistics specific to Mexican Americans, as well as their crises and appropriate interventions, is imperative to provide counseling/therapy services and culturally sensitive assessments. In this book, author Mario Tovar explains how Mexican American history and society affects the needs of this group and how services to Mexican Americans require adjustments as a result. Tovar documents significant differences among Mexican Americans depending on whether they are documented or undocumented immigrants, and on their place of origin—rural versus urban areas of Mexico, and northern versus southern Mexico, for example. Readers will understand how the region of the United States in which Mexican Americans settle can influence the development of certain traits for them and learn about mental and physical health care practices common to Mexican Americans, including folk medicine and "healers" who often include grandmothers and elder neighbors.

Book THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENT S ACCULTURATION AND CHILDREN S DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS AMONG MEXICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN OF LOW SOCIO ECONOMIC STATUS

Download or read book THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENT S ACCULTURATION AND CHILDREN S DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS AMONG MEXICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN OF LOW SOCIO ECONOMIC STATUS written by Marisela Escárcega and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the equivocal results on the role that acculturation plays in the depressive symptoms among children and adolescents, and the limited research on Mexican American youth in general, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of parent's acculturation and their children's depressive symptoms among Mexican-American of low socio-economic status. This study followed Rodriguez's (2007) methodological recommendations to use a strong methodological design, and use an orthogonal acculturation measurement. The study selected a stratified random sample of 198 students, selecting equal numbers of males and females, and equal subjects from grades 3rd through 5th. Subjects were selected from three elementary schools located in a low socio-economic school district in the Southwestern United States. Parents of the selected students were asked to complete a demographic form, the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (Cuellar, Arnold, and Maldonado, 1995), and the Internalizing subscales of the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18 (CBCL/6-18; Achenbach and Rescorla, 2001). The study found no significant relationship between parent's acculturation and children's depressive symptoms. The study was limited by high attrition among the sample, a frequent characteristic of low socio-economic populations.
