Book Effects of a Time varying Photoelectron Flux on Spacecraft Potential

Download or read book Effects of a Time varying Photoelectron Flux on Spacecraft Potential written by Henry Berry Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of plasma data from the geosynchronous satellites ATS-5 and ATS-6 shows that the satellites vary rapidly in potential as they pass into and out of the earth's shadow. These variations result from the loss of photoelectrons as the sun is eclipsed. A model of this phenomemon which includes the effects of atmospheric attenuation of the solar flux between 1000 A and 3000 A and spacecraft charge buildup is used to predict the potential variations observed by ATS-5 and ATS-6. The model predicts potentials within + or - 700 V of the observed potentials in the range -100 V to -10,000 V. (Author).

Book Atmospheric Effects on the Time varying Photoelectron Flux from Satellite Surfaces

Download or read book Atmospheric Effects on the Time varying Photoelectron Flux from Satellite Surfaces written by J. M. Forbes and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satellites in geosynchronous orbit have been found to vary rapidly in potential as they pass into the earth's shadow. The cause of this effect is known to be the loss of the photoelectron flux from the satellite surface. A material-dependent model of this emission process based on detailed models of the attenuation of the sunlight and the photoelectron emission as a function of wavelength will be presented. The model is found to agree in detail with actual measurements of photoelectron emission from tungsten. The computer code included in the Appendix is readily adaptable to a number of materials and situations where the detailed absorption of sunlight as a function of altitude is required.

Book Spacecraft Potential Calculations

Download or read book Spacecraft Potential Calculations written by Henry Berry Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple model for calculating the potential on a spacecraft by balancing the currents to and from the spacecraft surface is developed. The model, calibrated using ATS-5 plasma data during periods when the satellite was in the earth's shadow, is used to predict potentials on a shadowed, electrically isolated surface at geosynchronous orbit as a function of local time. Potentials are also predicted as the spacecraft moves into and out of the earth's shadow. The results indicate accuracies of + or - 800 V over a range of 10,000 V. (Author).

Book Spacecraft Charging at Geosynchronous Orbit

Download or read book Spacecraft Charging at Geosynchronous Orbit written by Henry Berry Garrett and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid variations in spacecraft potential are observed on entry and exit from the earth's shadow. Generalized equations, based on elementary plasma probe theory, are developed which make quantitative estimates of these potentials as a function of satellite position in the earth's penumbra, and are compared with data from the ATS-5 and ATS-6 geosynchronous satellites. The agreement between the observations and the predictions results from the approximate constancy of the ratio of the ambient ion to electron current during injection events. Due to the significant size and shape differences of the ATS-5 and ATS-6 satellites, the results are applicable in many space physics situations such as estimating the effects of electron beams on satellite potential and of spacecraft charging on very large space structures. Book P78 2 SCATHA Preliminary Data Atlas

Download or read book P78 2 SCATHA Preliminary Data Atlas written by E. G. Mullen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary study of the 100 eV to approx. 1 MeV plasma environment encountered by the P78-2 Spacecraft Charging at High Altitudes (SCATHA) satellite during its initial operation period was conducted. Forty-four days of 10-min averages of the four moments of the electron and ion distribution functions calculated from the SC5 and SC9 energetic particle measurements were analyzed to determine occurrence frequency, local time variation, geomagnetic activity variation, and L-shell variation. The single and double Maxwellian parameters derived from the four moments were similarly analyzed. The interrelationships between the moments and derived parameters were computed and the results compared with the ATS-5 and ATS-6 atlas of Garrett et al (1980). Results of this analysis establish a baseline range for the SCATHA plasma environment.
