Book Effects of a Reactive Barrier and Aquifer Geology on Metal Distribution and Mobility in a Mine Drainage Impacted Aquifer

Download or read book Effects of a Reactive Barrier and Aquifer Geology on Metal Distribution and Mobility in a Mine Drainage Impacted Aquifer written by Nora A. Doerr and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Nickel Rim aquifer has been impacted for five decades by a metal-rich plume generated from the Nickel Rim mine tailings impoundment. Metals released by the oxidation of pyrrhotite in the unsaturated zone of the tailings migrate into the downgradient aquifer, affecting both the groundwater and the aquifer solids. A reactive barrier has been installed in the aquifer to remove sulfate and metals from the groundwater. The effect of the reactive barrier on metal concentrations in the aquifer solids has not previously been studied, nor have other controls on metal distribution in the solid phase. In this study, a range of chemical extraction methods was applied to cores of aquifer sediment, to ascertain the distribution of metals among various solid phases present in the aquifer solids"--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitigation of Metal Mining Influenced Water is the "how to fix it" volume in a series of six handbooks on technologies for managing metal mine and metallurgical process influenced water. Unlike other texts that focus exclusively on acid drainage from coal mines, this comprehensive series examines both acidic and neutral pH waters from metal mining and metallurgical processes that may impact the environment. The authors take a holistic approach by considering all aspects of the mine life cycle, from planning and design to closure. In this book you'll learn how mining influenced water concerns can be prevented or reduced by disrupting the geochemical relationship that contributes to the release of metals and/or acidity. Industry experts provide insights into understanding a mine's physical environment and how it can influence waste and drainage quality. They outline key issues designers must address, including involving stakeholders who may be affected long after the mine closes. Case histories offer valuable planning and design considerations by illustrating what works and what doesn't. You'll also benefit from a thorough examination of mitigating technologies in a host of mining and processing situations, as well as the latest arsenal of waste treatment options. Mitigation of Metal Mining Influenced Wateris a must-read for planners, regulators, consultants, land mangers, students, researchers, and others concerned about the environmentally sound management of metal mine and metallurgical processing wastes and drainage quality.

Book Effect of Geological Heterogeneity on Permeable Reactive Barriers in Groundwater Remediation

Download or read book Effect of Geological Heterogeneity on Permeable Reactive Barriers in Groundwater Remediation written by Mubeen Mohammed and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A permeable reactive barrier (PRB) is an in situ technology for the remediation of contaminated groundwater, whose design is primarily based on the hydrogeology of the site. Heterogeneities in aquifers arising from natural hydrogeological formations create complexity and challenges in site investigation. An adequate site exploration method must be employed which minimizes uncertainty in designing a capture zone for the PRB. By using an objective approach, a proficient reliability index model is designed to quantify hydrogeological uncertainties in site exploration. Modflow-2000 is implemented to calculate groundwater heads and their sensitivity. Utilizing First-Order Second Moment (FOSM) approach, parameter input uncertainty is combined with sensitivity to generate variance in hydraulic heads. This is used for calculating beta to evaluate model prediction and obtaining a capture zone, in which design factors for the PRB are tested. The methods developed in this study are pertinent when applied to the Kansas City Plant case.

Book The Water Legacies of Conventional Mining

Download or read book The Water Legacies of Conventional Mining written by James E. Nickum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of mining is too big to ignore in a world of oversubscribed water. This is true of conventional mining as much as – or even more than – hydraulic fracturing (fracking). The legacy issues of such mining on water have not been fully appreciated, especially the irretrievable effects mining has had on communities and ecosystems around the world through its impact on water. Yet this is not an ‘us-or-them’ problem: the wealth, influence and technical knowledge of mining interests can and must be part of the solution. All of the contributions to this volume either consider the deficiencies of existing governance structures and the need for better ones, or explore the use of new techniques to identify and evaluate social and environmental impacts. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Water International.
