Book Effectiveness of various organometallics as antiwar additives in mineral oil

Download or read book Effectiveness of various organometallics as antiwar additives in mineral oil written by Donald H. Buckley and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sliding friction experiments were conducted with 1045 steel contacting 302 stainless steel and lubricated with various organometallics in mineral oil. Auger emission spectroscopy was used to determine the element present in the wear contact zone. The results indicate that there are organometallics which are as effective an antiwear additives as the commonly used zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate. These include dimethyl cadmium, triphenyl lead thiomethoxide, and triphenyl tin chloride. The additives were examined in concentrations to 1 weight percent. With dimethyl cadmium at concentrations of 0.5 weight percent and above, cadmium was detected in the contact zone. Coincident with the detection of cadmium, a marked decrease in the friction coefficient was observed. All additives examined reduced friction, but only the aforementioned reduced wear to a level comparable to that observed with zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate.

Book A Study of the Effectiveness of Selected Antiwear Additives in Synthetic Esters

Download or read book A Study of the Effectiveness of Selected Antiwear Additives in Synthetic Esters written by Kenneth A. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effectiveness of selected antiwear additives was evaluated using synthetic ester base stocks. Certain relations between chemical structure and effectiveness were determined. The investigations were conducted using the pin on disk apparatus developed by Wintershall/Baist. Di-, tri- and tetraester fluids were used in the investigation. The basic lubricity of the oils was found to increase with increasing molecular weight and viscosity. Additives containing chlorine, sulfur and phosphorus were investigated, as well as several organic acids and organometallic compounds. Phosphorus additives proved effective, while sulfur and chlorine containing materials showed little beneficial effect. Experiments using aliphatic acids showed long chain saturated acids to be more useful in decreasing wear than shorter chain or unsaturated acids. A limiting or optimum concentration for tricresylphosphate was determined. A series of experiments using alkyl- and arylphosphates showed their effectiveness to be related to their hydrolytic stabilities. The lower hydrolytic stability phosphates were most effective. Further experiments showed that the possible acidic impurities in tricresylphosphate are powerful antiwear additives. Certain organometallic compounds were found to have limited capability as antiwear additives. Overall results showed additives to have specific ranges of load over which they were effective, and proper selection of additives can result in an additive package to cover a wide load range. Book Encyclopedia of Tribology

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Tribology written by C. Kajdas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-10-09 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multidisciplinary nature of tribology, the conflicting theories and approaches to it found in the literature, plus the fact that definitions of the same phenomenon often differ widely, prompted the authors to compile this work. The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide information on specific tribological terms. The entire field of tribology encompassing lubrication, friction and wear, i.e. the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion, is covered. An extensive description of the chemical and biological aspects of tribology is given, including a wide range of current references and authors. The reader is also referred to relevant literature for most of the terms listed. The information presented has been made as up-to-date as possible, taking into account both the theoretical and practical nature of the subject. The encyclopedia will be an indispensable reference source in the work of engineers, chemists, physicists, metallurgists, materials and surface scientists, biotechnologists, as well as research workers in these fields.

Book Potentially Useful Polyolester Lubricant Additives an Overview of Antioxidants Antiwear and Antiseize Compounds

Download or read book Potentially Useful Polyolester Lubricant Additives an Overview of Antioxidants Antiwear and Antiseize Compounds written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable service lubrication of compressors with polyolesters that do not contain additives is the optimal goal for hermetic compressor use. Chlorine derived from CFC and HCFC refrigerants is reported to have effective antiwear properties and negates the widespread use of additives in mineral oil lubricated systems. The use of antioxidants for mineral oil and polyolesters have been reported; antioxidant additive activity seems essential for polyolesters.- Antiwear and antiseize additives seem to be a short term goal for use with polyolesters. High silicone aluminum to steel wear seems to be a primary target for additive use. The interaction of specific heteroatom organic compounds with highly polar surface active synthetic polyolester lubricants is complex. Results of an extensive literature search describe results from a service base determined at ambient conditions. Known lubricant additives used in the hermetic compressor industry, the. mode of action of several types of additives and some lubricant additive chemistry that demonstrates selective thermal stability in conjunction with the chemical structure are examined.

Book Corrosion Resistance and Lubricity Improvement of Mineral Oil Type Lubricants

Download or read book Corrosion Resistance and Lubricity Improvement of Mineral Oil Type Lubricants written by Elmer I. Spearman and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samples of materials containing organic sulfonates, phenylamines, diamines, thiophosphates, phosphates, modified fatty acids, or a combination of one or more of these compounds were obtained for screening tests to determine the relative effectiveness of these materials as corrosion-inhibiting additives for mineral oil-base lubricants. The results of these tests indicated that the most effective corrosion-inhibiting additive was stearoyl sarcosine. Experimental lubricants for weapons were formulated with stearoyl sarcosine and antiwear additives in a mineral oil-base fluid. An optimum lubricant formulation was established that exceeds the lubrication properties of MIL-L-46000A (Military Specification, 'Lubricating Oil, Semifluid - Automatic Weapons') and that approaches the high-humidity, corrosion-inhibiting characteristics of MIL-L-46000A. However, the salt-spray resistance properties of this formulation were inferior to those of MIL-L-46000A. (Author).
