Book excerpt: Thermal insulation is the reduction of heat transfer between objects in thermal contact or in range of radiative influence. Thermal insulation can be achieved with specially engineered methods or processes, as well as with suitable object shapes and materials. In low-energy buildings in climates with a heating demand the entire building envelope has to be well insulated. The building envelope consists of all the building elements which separate the inside from the outside. Its main purpose is to provide for a comfortable indoor climate irrespective of the outdoor climate which is determined by the weather. During cold periods the temperature inside the building envelope is usually higher than it is outside. As a result, heat is lost through the envelope and, unless this heat is replaced, the inside of the building cools down adjusting to the outdoor temperature. The inverse applies during hot periods with excessive heat entering the building through its envelope. Therefore, it makes sense to restrict the heat flow in any building irrespective of the climate and this is where thermal protection comes in. Effective thermal conductivities of graphite and zirconia fibers were measured in the temperature range of -320 to 200 F. The results were compared with empirical and theoretical models of heat transfer in fibrous insulations. Measurements of visible and infrared transmission through insulation materials indicated that scattering is the principal mechanism of radiation attenuation. Scattering and absorption cross sections estimated from the transmission data are given and show little effect of insulation temperature. The effective thermal conductivities of evacuated insulation systems were measured in the temperature range from 60 to 4000 F. The stability of materials exposed to high temperature vacuum environment for up to 170 hours was studied.
