Book Nuclear Physics With Effective Field Theory Proceedings Of The Joint Caltech int Workshop

Download or read book Nuclear Physics With Effective Field Theory Proceedings Of The Joint Caltech int Workshop written by Ubirajara Van Kolck and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-09-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective field theory (EFT), a technique used extensively in particle physics, provides a framework for systematically describing nuclear systems in a way consistent with quantum chromodynamics, the underlying theory of strong interactions. Because it offers the possibility of a unified description of all low-energy processes involving nucleons, it has the potential to become the foundation of conventional nuclear physics.Since the early 1990's when Weinberg applied the techniques of EFT to multiple-nucleon systems, significant developments have been made. However, serious obstacles have also been encountered. This book contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Nuclear Physics with Effective Field Theory, held in the Kellogg Radiation Laboratory at Caltech on the 26th and 27th of February 1998, which specifically addressed those issues. Physicists from different areas of sub-atomic physics gathered in an attempt to arrive at a consistent power counting scheme for the nucleon-nucleon interaction, a first step toward dealing with few-nucleon systems and ultimately nuclear matter and finite nuclei.

Book Selected Topics in Nonperturbative QCD

Download or read book Selected Topics in Nonperturbative QCD written by Adriano Di Giacomo and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses aspects of QCD which are related to its underlying structure as a field theory and to its mechanisms. Perturbative expansions do not work at large distances for QCD: the hadron spectrum, the confinement of colour, its deconfinement at high temperatures and the breaking of chiral symmetry all need nonperturbative methods of analysis. Sum rules, chiral perturbation theory and the formulation of QCD on a lattice are some of the tools used to test models, like the stochastic vacuum, the instanton liquid or the consideration of monopoles in the vacuum to produce dual superconductivity and confinement. The work covers different points of view and critical comparison between the different approaches. It can be considered a good reference text.

Book Formation And Evolution Of Black Holes In The Galaxy Selected Papers With Commentary

Download or read book Formation And Evolution Of Black Holes In The Galaxy Selected Papers With Commentary written by Hans A Bethe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-03-04 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In published papers H A Bethe and G E Brown worked out the collapse of large stars and supernova explosions. They went on to evolve binaries of compact stars, finding that in the standard scenario the first formed neutron star always went into a black hole in common envelope evolution. C-H Lee joined them in the study of black hole binaries and gamma ray bursts. They found the black holes to be the fossils of the gamma ray bursts. From their properties they could reconstruct features of the burst and of the accompanying hypernova explosions. This invaluable book contains 23 papers on astrophysics, chiefly on compact objects, written over 23 years. The papers are accompanied by illuminating commentary. In addition there is an appendix on kaon condensation which the editors believe to be relevant to the equation of state in neutron stars, and to explain why black holes are formed at relatively low masses.

Book Memorial Volume For Y Nambu

Download or read book Memorial Volume For Y Nambu written by Lars Brink and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have lost one of the giants of the twentieth century physics when Yoichiro Nambu passed away in July, 2015, at the age of 94.Today's Standard Model, though still incomplete in many respects, is the culmination of the most successful theory of the Universe to date, and it is built upon foundations provided by discoveries made by Nambu in the 1960s: the mechanism of spontaneously broken symmetry in Nature (with G Jona-Lasinio) and the hidden new SU(3) symmetry of quarks and gluons (with M-Y Han).In this volume honoring Nambu's memory, World Scientific Publishing presents a unique collection of papers written by his former colleagues, collaborating researchers and former students and associates, not only citing Nambu's great contributions in physics but also many personal and private reminiscences, some never told before. This volume also contains the very last scientific writing by Professor Nambu himself, discussing the development of particle physics. This book is a volume for all who benefited not only from Nambu's contributions toward understanding the Universe but also his warm and kind persona. It is a great addition to the history of contemporary physics.

Book From Superstrings To Supergravity Proceedings Of The 26th Workshop Of The Eloisatron Project

Download or read book From Superstrings To Supergravity Proceedings Of The 26th Workshop Of The Eloisatron Project written by Duff Michael James and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-03-28 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the standard model in explaining low energy (≈ 100GeV) physics within the framework of spontaneously broken Yang-Mills theory has given physicists the hope that the Einstein dream of a unified theory of fundamental interactions might be achieved using geometrical methods of local symmetry principles supplemented by consistency requirements such as renormalization, unitarity and, most crucially, compatibility with present low energy data.Merging these principles with the quantum-mechanical notions of spin and statistics led physicists further to develop new theories in the last fifteen years for which the gauge symmetry principle is extended to incorporate supersymmetry and relativistic extended objects - the most famous example being superstrings propagating in curved space-time and having supergravity as their effective field theory. The proceedings represent the latest highlights in the field reported on by active researchers working in this particular area in addition to discussions on future perspectives.
