Book Effective Algorithms and Protocols for Wireless Networking

Download or read book Effective Algorithms and Protocols for Wireless Networking written by Fenghui Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much research has been done on wireless sensor networks. However, most protocols and algorithms for such networks are based on the ideal model Unit Disk Graph (UDG) model or do not assume any model. Furthermore, many results assume the knowledge of location information of the network. In practice, sensor networks often deviate from the UDG model significantly. It is not uncommon to observe stable long links that are more than five times longer than unstable short links in real wireless networks. A more general network model, the quasi unit-disk graph (quasi-UDG) model, captures much better the characteristics of wireless networks. However, the understanding of the properties of general quasi-UDGs has been very limited, which is impeding the design of key network protocols and algorithms. In this dissertation we study the properties for general wireless sensor networks and develop new topological/geometrical techniques for wireless sensor networking. We assume neither the ideal UDG model nor the location information of the nodes. Instead we work on the more general quasi-UDG model and focus on figuring out the relationship between the geometrical properties and the topological properties of wireless sensor networks. Based on such relationships we develop algorithms that can compute useful substructures (planar subnetworks, boundaries, etc.). We also present direct applications of the properties and substructures we constructed including routing, data storage, topology discovery, etc. We prove that wireless networks based on quasi-UDG model exhibit nice properties like separabilities, existences of constant stretch backbones, etc. We develop efficient algorithms that can obtain relatively dense planar subnetworks for wireless sensor networks. We also present efficient routing protocols and balanced data storage scheme that supports ranged queries. We present algorithmic results that can also be applied to other fields (e.g., information management). Based on divide and conquer and improved color coding technique, we develop algorithms for path, matching and packing problem that significantly improve previous best algorithms. We prove that it is unlikely for certain problems in operation science and information management to have any relatively effective algorithm or approximation algorithm for them.

Book An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Adil Bashir and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 8.12, , course: M. Tech, language: English, abstract: Wireless sensor network (WSN) is an emerging imperious leading technology of the current century that presents great promise for various pioneering applications. The use of sensor networks should keep developing, mainly in the fields of scientific, logistic, healthcare and military applications. Sensor networks interact and collect sensitive data and operate in unattended hostile environments, thus it is imperative to pay attention to the security of wireless sensor networks as they are highly prone to threats. For successful operation of the nodes, it is important to maintain the security and privacy of the transmitted data as well as the data stored at nodes. The different security protocols and models used in the wired and other wireless networks such as ad-hoc networks cannot be used in WSNs because the sensor size poses significant restrictions, mainly in terms of energy autonomy and node lifetime, as the batteries have to be too tiny. Also, the existing security protocols in these constrained networks are not sufficiently energy efficient, which is the real motivation behind this work. In this thesis, a light-weight dynamic security algorithm titled “An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol (EEDSP)” for wireless sensor networks has been proposed and implemented at nodal level. We also implement an existing algorithm and then carry out the performance analysis of both the algorithms in terms of energy consumptions, node lifetime and memory requirements at source and intermediate nodes to verify the improvement in our protocol’s results.

Book Algorithms and Protocols for Efficient Multicast Transport and Congestion Control in Wireless Networks

Download or read book Algorithms and Protocols for Efficient Multicast Transport and Congestion Control in Wireless Networks written by Kai Su and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective and efficient support for wireless data transfer is an essential requirement for future Internet design, as the number of wireless network users and devices, and the amount of traffic flowing through these devices have been steadily growing. This dissertation tackles several problems, and proposes algorithmic and protocol design solutions to better provide such support. The first problem is regarding the inefficiency of multicast in wireless networks: a transmission is considered a unicast despite the fact that multiple nearby nodes can receive the transmitted packet. Random network coding (RNC) is considered a cure for this problem, but related wireless network radio resources, such as transmit power, need to be optimally allocated to use RNC to its full advantage. A dynamic radio resource allocation framework for RNC is proposed to maximize multicast throughput. Its efficacy is evaluated through both numerical and event driven simulations. Next, we present the design of MFTP, a clean-slate transport protocol aimed for supporting efficient wireless and mobile content delivery. Current transport protocol of the Internet, TCP, is known to fall short if the end-to-end path involves wireless links where link quality varies drastically, or if the client is mobile. Building on a mobility-centric future Internet architecture, MobilityFirst (MF), a set of transport protocol components are designed to collectively provide robust and efficient data transfer to wireless, or mobile end hosts. These include en-route storage for disconnection, in-network transport service, and hop-by-hop delivery of large chunks of data. A research prototype is built and deployed on ORBIT testbed to evaluate the design. Results from several wireless network use case evaluations, such as large file transfer, web content retrieval, and disconnection services, have shown that the proposed mechanisms achieve significant performance improvement over TCP. Finally, a scalable, network-assisted congestion control algorithm is proposed for the MobilityFirst future Internet architecture. In MobilityFirst, various intelligent functionalities, such as reliability and storage, are placed inside the network to assist with data delivery. Traditional end-to-end congestion control such as that carried out by TCP becomes unsuitable as it is unable to take advantage of such in-network functionalities. We design a congestion control policy that uses explicit congestion notifications from network routers and rate control at traffic sources. The hop-by-hop reliability provided in MF simplifies end-to-end reliable delivery of wireless/mobile data, but often requires routers to keep per-flow queues to carry out congestion control which could become impractical in the presence of a large number of flows. Our approach builds on a per-interface queueing scheme, and we show through simulation that it is able to substantially improve delay, fairness, and scalability with only

Book Medium Access Control in Wireless Networks

Download or read book Medium Access Control in Wireless Networks written by Hongyi Wu and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless technologies and applications are becoming one of the fastest growing and most promising areas in recent years. To accommodate data transmission by multiple stations sharing the scarce wireless bandwidth, a medium access control (MAC) protocol plays a crucial role in scheduling packet transmission fairly and efficiently. The emerging wireless networks, such as ad-hoc networks, sensor networks or mesh networks, are mostly multi-hop based and in distributed manner, which brings a lot of problems and challenges in designing fine-tuned MAC protocols tailored for modern wireless network. In this book, the authors give complete and in-depth overviews to the classic medium access control algorithms and the related protocols, as well as their applications in various wireless data networks especially the most successful Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). The book consists of three major parts. Part I of this book, including Chapters 1-7, is emphasising on the fundamentals of medium access control algorithms and protocols. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the wireless networks, such as overview of wireless networks, problems and challenges of the wireless networks, and the classifications of MAC protocols as well as the performance metrics. Chapter 2 introduces important collision resolution algorithms applied in medium access controls, for example, the splitting algorithm and the backoff algorithm. Chapter 3 reviews the hybrid access control algorithms that combine both contention and allocation schemes. A series of important collision avoidance schemes are introduced in Chapters 4-7 respectively, with a specific design goal covered in each chapter. Chapter 4 focuses on the multi-channel MAC protocols for collision avoidance; Chapter 5 introduces the concepts of power control and power management in medium access control and how they can be applied in MAC protocol design; Chapter 6 presents how to provide Quality-of- Service (QoS) to multimedia wireless networks, in either centralised or distributed manner; and Chapter 7 explains how the smart antennas can be applied in the medium access control to provide high channel throughput and low packet collision.

Book Resource Management in Wireless Networking

Download or read book Resource Management in Wireless Networking written by Mihaela Cardei and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-01-10 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the pattern of the Internet growth in popularity, started in the early 1990s, the current unprecedented expansion of wireless technology promises to have an even greater effect on how people communicate and interact, with considerable socio-economic impact all over the world. The driving force behind this growth is the remarkable progress in component miniaturization, integration, and also devel- ments in waveforms, coding, and communication protocols. Besides established infrastructurebased wireless networks (cellular, WLAN, sat- lite) ad-hoc wireless networks emerge as a new platform for distributed applications and for personal communication in scenarios where deploying infrastructure is not feasible. In ad-hoc wireless networks, each node is capable of forwarding packets on behalf of other nodes, so that multi-hop paths provide end-to-end connectivity. The increased flexibility and mobility of ad-hoc wireless networks are favored for appli- tions in law enforcement, homeland defense and military. In a world where wireless networks become increasingly interoperable with each other and with the high-speed wired Internet, personal communication systems will transform into universal terminals with instant access to variate content and able of handle demanding tasks, such as multimedia and real-time video. With users roaming between networks, and with wide variation in wireless link quality even in a single domain, the communications terminal must continue to provide a level of Quality of Service that is acceptable to the user and conforms to a contracted Service Level Agreement.
