Book The Effect of Gender on Imagery in Golf Putting and Driving

Download or read book The Effect of Gender on Imagery in Golf Putting and Driving written by Guy Gniotczynski and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does gender have an impact in the effectiveness of imagery as related to golf putting and driving? Ten collegiate golfers (5 men and 5 women) were divided into imagery and non imagery groups by gender. Each of the golfers completed a pre and post treatment putting and driving exercise. The male imagers showed significant differences in the putting exercise but not in the driving exercise. There were no significant differences found for either the putting or driving exercises. Both the male and female non imagers showed no significant difference in the putting or driving exercises. There is not enough evidence from this study to make any conclusions on the effect of gender on imagery effectiveness as related golf putting and driving.

Book Mental Practice Clinical and Experimental Research in Imagery and Action Observation

Download or read book Mental Practice Clinical and Experimental Research in Imagery and Action Observation written by Magdalena Ietswaart and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now strong evidence demonstrating that the brain simulates action and other functions. Such action simulation can be evoked through conscious mental rehearsal of movement or imagery, but also through passive action observation watching movements in others. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that mental rehearsal of movement, or mental practice, can produce improvements normally attributed to practising actual movements. It is currently assumed that such improvements are due to neural activation associated with action simulation. However the neuroscience of mental practice efficacy is still poorly understood. The aim of this research topic is to clarify the underlying mechanisms of mental practice, bringing evidence from cognitive neuroscience, experimental neuropsychology, sport and movement science, and clinical neurology. It also attempts to address confusion regarding the concepts of imagery and observation, which has hampered the progression of mental practice research both scientifically and applied. As well as reviews, theoretical, and position articles, this research topic includes original neuroimaging, experimental, and patient research addressing, among others, the following issues. Neuroimaging studies provide strong evidence for action simulation, but the link to behavioural change and functional outcome is weak. What is the evidence that mental practice efficacy is driven by neuroplasticity processes evoked by action simulation? This research topic includes contributions on neural correlates and behaviour with regards to imagery and action observation. Much of the mental practice efficacy evidence comes from longstanding research within sport science. However, what does mental practice entail in these contexts, and to what extent is it compatible with the cognitive neuroscience perspective of action simulation? This research topic will include contributions that consider both evidence and concepts with regards to imagery and action observation, in an attempt to build an interdisciplinary consensus on the nature and application of mental practice. Mental practice is perceived as a promising motor rehabilitation technique, but critically there is lack of clarity or consensus on what mental practice treatment should entail. It is also not clear what are the most appropriate outcomes to measure imagery ability and cognitive or behavioural change following mental practice. A further important issue that needs consideration as part of this research topic is dosage, as it is currently unclear how much mental practice is appropriate and whether this depends on patient variables such as age, cognitive functioning, motor function, or pathophysiology.

Book The Effects of an Imagery Intervention on Imagery Ability

Download or read book The Effects of an Imagery Intervention on Imagery Ability written by Alexander London (author) and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Athletes commonly use imagery to improve performance by mentally practicing a physical action without explicit physical movement. The ability to image is a trainable skill and a crucial factor influencing the efficacy of an imagery intervention. The purpose of the current study was to determine an appropriate duration of an intervention to improve the ability of generating images. Experienced golfers (n=12) were instructed to practice a personalized imagery script for 15 minutes, three days per week for six weeks. During each weekly visit to the laboratory, participants were evaluated on imagery ability, measured by the Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaire (SIAQ), and putting performance, recorded by successfully made putts and average distance from the hole of missed putts. A one-way repeated-measures ANOVA statistical test comparing the SIAQ scores at seven different times found significant effects, F(6, 66) = 18.17, p .001. Follow-up dependent t tests revealed that scores increased significantly from baseline to week 1, t(11) = -3.38, p = .006, and again from week 2 to week 3, t(11) = -3.61, p = .004. A secondary purpose of the study was to determine if putting performance improved during the course of an imagery intervention. Two one-way repeated-measures ANOVA's to compare the number of successfully made putts and the average distance of missed putts did not yield significant effects; F(6,66) = .959, p .05, and F(6,66) = 2.08, p > .05, respectfully. Multiple Pearson's correlation coefficients examining the relationship between imagery ability and putting performance did not find any significant (p > .05) results. While considering the immense time constraints athletes typically have to devote to mental-skills training, the results of the existing study suggest applying an imagery intervention for a three-week duration to reach optimal imagery performance. Further research is still needed to confirm the trajectory of imagery ability to achieve a peak.

Book The Use of Visual Imagery in Golf

Download or read book The Use of Visual Imagery in Golf written by Richard O. Bush and published by . This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of thousands of counseling/consulting sessions, within which the author has helped his patients to address specific concerns related to self-improvement directed at improving their game of golf. Having addressed specific issues of improvement with other athletes during the course of sports therapy, it became a natural progression for the author to move into the sport of golf. In doing so, he himself became "hooked" on the game and the need to dissect it, to determine what makes the "greats" that we watch in person and on television each week as great as they are. By utilizing the various processes within this small, but effect booklet, you too can begin the process of positive change with your golf game. You will find that, like the game itself the more you practice the mental along with the physical aspects, the more improvements you can expect to see and feel.
