Book Effect of Transition Planning on Postsecondary Support Receipt by Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Effect of Transition Planning on Postsecondary Support Receipt by Students with Disabilities written by Lynn A. Newman and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 were analyzed to determine the effect of receiving transition planning education and having a transition plan that specified needed postsecondary accommodations on the receipt of disability-specific services and generally available supports at the postsecondary level by students with disabilities. The analyses included a nationally representative cohort of 1,210 students. Propensity model analyses indicated that both variables significantly increased the odds that students with disabilities would receive disability-specific and generally available supports at 2-year institutions. In addition, students with transition plans specifying accommodations were more likely to receive disability-related supports at career/technical education (CTE) schools and CTE students who had received transition planning education in high school were more likely to receive generally available supports. The results provide important implications for policy and practice, and a strong foundation for further exploration of the linkages between transition planning experiences and receipt of disability-specific and generally available supports at postsecondary schools. Given the significant change in responsibility faced by students with disabilities in college in regard to decision making and self-advocacy, transition planning for students with disabilities needs to include explicit instruction related to accessing needed services at the college level. Book Transition Planning for Postsecondary Students with Disabilities

Download or read book Transition Planning for Postsecondary Students with Disabilities written by Roberta Rusch Dorow and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004 mandated transition planning services for students with disabilities who are exiting high school and entering the world of work or postsecondary education. Despite collaborative efforts between educational institutions and various service agencies to facilitate transition from high school to employment or continued education, students with disabilities appear to lag behind their non-handicapped peers in these areas. This study focused on transition planning for students with mild disabilities enrolled in a community college in central Texas. The individual transition plans (ITPs) of fifteen students who had self-declared to the college as having a learning disability were obtained from the high school from which they graduated. The records were analyzed for evidence of twelve essential components of transition planning recommended in educational literature. The students were interviewed regarding their vi i transition plans and what they viewed as factors necessary for success in college. Four professional staff members of the Education Support Service, which serves students with disabilities on campus, were also interviewed regarding how prepared the students were for college work and what factors that promote college success should be included in adequate transition plans. The study investigated the adequacy and "fit" of transition planning as an effective means of preparing students with disabilities for the reality of postsecondary education. Knowledge gained from this study could assist public school special educators to develop appropriate ITPs and inform practice in the field of secondary special education in areas such as curriculum, collaboration with service agencies, and assessment of transition service needs.

Book An Analysis of Factors Related to Receipt of Accommodations and Services by Postsecondary Students with Disabilities

Download or read book An Analysis of Factors Related to Receipt of Accommodations and Services by Postsecondary Students with Disabilities written by Lynn A. Newman and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A secondary analysis of the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 examined the relationship between demographic, disability-related, secondary school preparation, and transition planning variables and receipt of accommodations and other disability-specific services at the postsecondary level for 2,470 postsecondary students with disabilities. The results indicated that secondary students who received transition planning education were more likely to receive accommodations and other disability-specific services in 2-year colleges and that those who had a transition plan that specified postsecondary accommodations and supports as a needed post--high school service were more likely to receive those types of services in 2-year colleges and in career and technical education schools. These findings suggest that secondary schools can influence the likelihood that students will seek out and receive postsecondary accommodations and other disability-specific services. Book Supporting the Transition of Students with Disabilities to the Postsecondary Setting

Download or read book Supporting the Transition of Students with Disabilities to the Postsecondary Setting written by Shannon Valek and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state of transition planning is too weak to prepare students with disabilities for the transition from the secondary to postsecondary setting. Research shows a lack of professional development, generically written Transition Plans, poor student preparedness, limited collaboration efforts, and school districts’ disregard for federal law, which limits students with disabilities access to higher education, vocational training and employment opportunities. The outcome of this project is a handbook that education specialists can utilize while supporting students with disabilities through the transition process, with the intention of increasing communication with outside agencies and self-advocacy skills instruction. The handbook also includes activities designed to increase students with disabilities awareness of their legal rights and responsibilities, as well as what their disability is, how it effects their ability to perform in the educational or vocational setting, and what supports are needed to achieve their postsecondary goals.
