Book Effect of Thinning on Height and Diameter Growth of Oak Yellow poplar Saplings

Download or read book Effect of Thinning on Height and Diameter Growth of Oak Yellow poplar Saplings written by Rufus H. Allen and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Studying the response to thinning of a 7- to 9-year-old upland hardwood sapling stand, we found that height growth of yellow poplar and oak trees was markedly reduced by heavy thinning. This suggests that stand density should be carefully controlled to achieve maximum benefit from thinnings in very young stands. S3.

Book Planting Yellow poplar

Download or read book Planting Yellow poplar written by T. E. Russell and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yellow-poplar can be established on a wide variety of sites with bare-rooted seedlings and standard planting techniques. Many past plantings have performed poorly because substandard seedlings have been planted on unsuitable sites and competing vegetation has not been adequately controlled. Research over the past two decades, however, provides workable guides for site selection, planting practices, and competition control. Enough is now known that the forester can avoid or overcome the most common causes of failure.

Book The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks 3rd Edition

Download or read book The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks 3rd Edition written by Paul S Johnson and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of The Ecology and Silviculture of Oaks is an updated and expanded edition that explores oak forests as responsive ecosystems. New chapters emphasize the importance of fire in sustaining and managing oak forests, the effects of a changing climate, and advanced artificial regeneration techniques. This new edition expands on silvicultural methods for restoring and sustaining oak woodlands and savannahs, and on management of ecosystem services, including wildlife habitat. It also incorporates new material on evaluating landscape-scale, and cumulative effects of management action compared with inaction. Nine of the fifteen chapters cover updated information on the geographic distribution of US oaks, oak regeneration dynamics, site productivity, stocking and stand development, even- and uneven-aged silvicultural methods, and growth and yield. This edition includes a new section with colour illustrations for improved visualization of complex relationships. This book is intended for forest and wildlife managers, ecologists, silviculturists, environmentalists, and students of those fields.

Book Some Effects of Paraformaldehyde on Wood Surrounding Tapholes in Sugar Maple Trees

Download or read book Some Effects of Paraformaldehyde on Wood Surrounding Tapholes in Sugar Maple Trees written by Alex L. Shigo and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Pills of paraformaldehyde (trioxymethylene) are commonly used in tapholes in sugar maple trees (Acer saccharum Marsh.) to increase the yield of sap collected for making syrup and sugar (2, 4, 5, 8). The explanation offered for this increase in sap yield is that microorganisms in the tapholes (7) cause premature decline and stoppage of the sap flow (1, 6), but that paraformaldehyde increases sap yield by inhibiting their growth (2). But what happens to the tree? To determine the effects of paraformaldehyde on the tissues surrounding tapholes, and on the microorganisms in those tissues, sugar maple trees were dissected and studied. This paper is a report on that study.S3.
