Book Cerambycidae of the World

Download or read book Cerambycidae of the World written by Qiao Wang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wang has gathered contributions from an impressive cohort of the world’s most respected experts on longhorned beetles. Chapters review both basics of cerambycid taxonomy, mor- phology, and behavior (feeding, reproduction, and chemical ecology), as well as more applied concerns, such as laboratory rearing, pest control, and bio- security. Overall, this volume is a valuable contribution to the literature as a "one-stop shop" for readers seeking a comprehensive overview of longhorned beetles... It represents a tremendous effort on the part of Wang and the authors, and has resulted in a much-needed update to the literature. This volume is the only work of its kind available at this time, and is a valuable addition to the library of any scientist studying wood-boring beetles. - Ann M. Ray, Biology, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio in The Quarterly Review of Biology, Volume 94, 2019 There are more than 36,000 described species in the family Cerambycidae in the world. With the significant increase of international trade in the recent decades, many cerambycid species have become major plant pests outside their natural distribution range, causing serious environmental problems at great cost. Cerambycid pests of field, vine, and tree crops and of forest and urban trees cost billions of dollars in production losses, damage to landscapes, and management expenditures worldwide. Cerambycidae of the World: Biology and Pest Management is the first comprehensive text dealing with all aspects of cerambycid beetles in a global context. It presents our current knowledge on the biology, classification, ecology, plant disease transmission, and biological, cultural, and chemical control tactics including biosecurity measures from across the world. Written by a team of global experts, this book provides an entrance to the scientific literature on Cerambycidae for scientists in research institutions, primary industries, and universities, and will serve as an essential reference for agricultural and quarantine professionals in governmental departments throughout the world.

Book Effect of Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus Nematod Aphelenchoididae Fourth Stage Dispersal of Juveniles and Log Seasonality on Life Processes of Monochamus Carolinensis Coleoptera Cerambycidae

Download or read book Effect of Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus Nematod Aphelenchoididae Fourth Stage Dispersal of Juveniles and Log Seasonality on Life Processes of Monochamus Carolinensis Coleoptera Cerambycidae written by Süleyman Akbulut and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer) Nickle, and its cerambycid beetle vector, Monochamus carolinensis (Olivier), have a commensal relationship. The nematode is transported from infested trees to new host trees by Monochamus beetles. The influence of nematode load (the number of nematodes carried per beetle), seasonal rearing in pine logs, and the mated status of female beetles on the life processes of M. carolinensis were investigated. Increasing nematode load had a slight negative effect on the reproductive potential of M. carolinensis females. Beetles that emerged from logs cut during the spring had a higher reproductive potential than those emerging from logs cut during the summer or autumn. The flight performance (flight distance, duration, and speed) of M. carolinensis was negatively affected by nematode load when individuals carried 10,000 or more nematodes. Unmated females outperformed their mated counterparts on all flight measure tests.

Book Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems

Download or read book Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems written by Timothy D. Paine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect and disease issues are often specific to the Mediterranean forest systems rather than shared with the temperate forests. In addition to the specific native insects and diseases, the forests are subject to the invasion of exotic species. The forests are also at risk from high degrees of human activity, including changing patterns of forest fires, land management activities, intensive plantation forestry using introduced timber species from other Mediterranean climate zones, and atmospheric deposition. Combined with elements of global climate change that may disproportionately affect Mediterranean climate systems, this creates a number of significant management issues that are unique to the Mediterranean forests. It is our goal that the information contained in this volume will contribute to understanding the unique aspects of Mediterranean forest systems and to protecting these critical resources.

Book Pine Wilt Disease

Download or read book Pine Wilt Disease written by Bo Guang Zhao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-27 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pine forests face a global threat of pine wilt disease, which is being spread by vector beetles carrying pathogenic nematodes from dead trees to healthy ones. Among the host pines there are varying degrees of susceptibility, and nematode strains also contain a variety of virulences, both of which factors help to determine whether infected host trees will die or survive. As well, biotic and abiotic environmental factors influence the fate of infected trees. This book describes the history of the disease, pathogenic nematodes, vector beetles, the etiology and ecology of the disease, microorganisms involved, and control methods that utilize host resistance and biological control agents. Concrete, comprehensive, and the most up-to-date knowledge about this worldwide forest epidemic is presented for readers, enabling them to understand the nature and epidemic threat of pine wilt disease.

Book Host and Vector Surveys for the Pinewood Nematode Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus Steiner and Buhrer Nickle Nematoda Aphelenchoididae in Canada

Download or read book Host and Vector Surveys for the Pinewood Nematode Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus Steiner and Buhrer Nickle Nematoda Aphelenchoididae in Canada written by W. W. Bowers and published by St. John's : Forestry Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region. This book was released on 1992 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pinewood nematode is an important forest pest because it causes wilting and considerable tree mortality, particularly in Japan. It was first reported in Manitoba in 1982, although there are no cases of tree mortality in Canada. It is ranked in the first level as a potentially important pest internationally and the Scandinavian countries have restricted the importation of conifer chips and timber from countries where the pest is known to occur, a major concern of Canadian forest managers and lumber exporters. In 1985, the Forest Insect and Disease Survey began a nationwide survey to determine the distribution of the pinewood nematode. This report briefly reviews its history and biology and presents the results of the Canadian survey.

Book Role of Monochamus Carolinensis Coleoptera Cerambycidae and Wood Moisture Content in the Regulation of Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus Nematoda Aphelenchoididae Dispersal Stage Formation

Download or read book Role of Monochamus Carolinensis Coleoptera Cerambycidae and Wood Moisture Content in the Regulation of Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus Nematoda Aphelenchoididae Dispersal Stage Formation written by Semi Necibi and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer) Nickle and its insect vector, Monochamus carolinensis (Olivier) are symbionts developing within a rapidly degrading pine log. The influence of environmental and biological factors on the development of pinewood nematode dispersal stage formation were investigated. Third-stage dispersal juvenile (J$\rm\sb{III}$) density was related to within-wood moisture content and nematode residence time but the influence of time was eliminated in further experiments. Thus, the switch from reproductive juvenile stages to J$\rm \sb{III}$s appeared to be related to the moisture content of the wood or other factor related to moisture content. Formation of fourth-stage dispersal juveniles (J$\rm \sb{IV}$s) occurred, almost exclusively, in the presence of M. carolinensis late pupae and callow adults. The switch from J$\rm \sb{III}$ to J$\rm \sb{IV}$ appeared to be related to the molting process in Monochamus beetles from the pupal to the callow adult stage. Formation of J$\rm \sb{IV}$s is mediated by a compound associated with adult beetle eclosion.

Book Pine Wilt Disease A Worldwide Threat to Forest Ecosystems

Download or read book Pine Wilt Disease A Worldwide Threat to Forest Ecosystems written by Manuel M. Mota and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pine wilt disease (PWD) is unquestionably a major threat to forest ecosystems worldwide. After seriously affecting Eastern Asian countries, the challenge is now in Europe, following its detection in Portugal in 1999 and its subsequent spread. For foresters, these were really very bad news and, in order for adequate action to be taken, scientists had to teach politicians about the seriousness of the problem. That is never an easy task, but it was successfully done at that time, mainly by the continued effort of Professor Manuel Mota. The challenge of having political decisions based on good science is fundamental for the success of any program, but especially in dif?cult situations such as those arising by the introduction of harmful organisms in new ecosystems. The success of the dialogue between science and policy requires intelligent partners from each side, which is not always necessarily the case... Examples of lack of recognition of problems raised by science are unfortunately abundant throughout the history of science. The recent recognition of the efforts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Al Gore with the - bel Prize, and the continued failure in taking appropriate actions by major political players is a dramatic modern example of the dif?culty of this dialogue...

Book Nematode Interactions

Download or read book Nematode Interactions written by M. Wajid Khan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nematode interactions are important biological phenomena and of great significance in agriculture. It is a fascinating subject which is multidisciplinary by nature, and concerns any scientist involved with plant health. There have been marked advances in our knowledge of various aspects of the subject in the last two decades. This study area has been the subject of several reviews, but there was no exclusive text on the subject. This has stressed the need to document the information, developing a unifying theme which treated nematode interactions in a holistic manner. This book is about the inter action of plant-parasitic nematodes with other plant pathogens or root symbionts, the nature of their associations, their impact on the host and con sequential interactive effects on the involved organisms. Since nematodes are at the centre of the theme, the responsibility of understanding of other plant pathogens dealt with in this book is largely delegated to the reader. I have limited the book content to interactions with biotic pathogens and root symbionts only, for various reasons. The book embodies 16 chapters, and attempts to present balanced infor mation on various aspects of nematode interactions with other plant pathogens and root symbionts. Some chapters describe general aspects of the subject. Interactions of nematodes with specific groups of organisms are addressed in the remaining chapters.
