A critical description is given of standard methods of testing adhesives, both destructively and non-destructively. The essen tial chemistry of adhesives and the importance of surface preparation are described and guidance is given for adhesive selection by me ans of check lists. For many applications, there will not be a unique adhesive which alone is suitable, and factors such as cost, convenience, produc tion considerations or familiarity may be decisive. A list of applications is given as examples. The authors wish to increase the confidence of engineers using adhesive bonding in load-bearing applications by the information and experience presented. With increasing experience of adhesives en gineering, design will become more elegant as weH as more fitted to its products.

Book Adhesion and Adhesives

Download or read book Adhesion and Adhesives written by Anthony J. Kinloch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, or so, the growth in the use of adhesives, especially in ever more technically demanding applications, has been rapid and many major developments in the technology of adhesives have been reported. This growth has also led to attention being focused on somewhat more basic studies of the science of adhesion and adhesives, and in recent years our level of fundamental knowledge concerning the formation and mechanical performance of adhesive joints has increased dramatically. Such studies have, of course, been aided greatly by the development of the tools at the disposal of the investigators. For example, specific surface analytical techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron and secondary-ion mass spectroscopy, and the increasingly sophisticated methods of stress analysis and fracture mechanics have been put to good use in furthering our understanding of the science of adhesion and adhesives. The present book attempts to review the multidisciplined subject of adhesion and adhesives, considering both the science and technology involved in the formation and mechanical performance of adhesive joints. The author would like to thank his friends and colleagues for useful discus sions and help in the preparation of this book. I am particularly grateful to P. Cawley, J. Comyn, W. A. Lees, A. C. Roulin-Moloney, W. C. Wake, J. G. Williams and R. J. Young who have read and commented on various chapters and P. Farr for preparing the diagrams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held under the auspices of the Division of Polymer Mater ials:Science and Engineering of the American Chemical Society in Kansas City, MO, September 12-17, 1982. There is a myriad of applications (ranging from aerospace to surgery) where adhesives are used to join different materials, and concomitantly the understanding of the behavior of adhesive joints becomes very important. There are many factors which can influence the behavior of adhesive joints, e.g., substrate preparation, in terfacial aspects, joint design, mode of stress, external environ ment, etc., and in order to understand the joint behavior in a holistic manner, one must take due cognizance of all these germane factors. So this symposium was planned to address not only how to make acceptable bonds but their characterization, durability and testing were also accorded due consideration.

Chapter Two "Coupled Shear Stress-Diffusion Model for Adhesively Bonded Single Lap Joints" presents an analytical model for the bond-line shear stress due to tensile-shear load considering the moisture diffusion effect subjected to shear tensile load. In the presented analytical model the effect of bending of single lap joint under a shear tensile load is neglected. For various moisture exposure time the shear stress distribution along the single lap joint bonding area is explored. Finally, the finite element simulation is compared with presented analytical model. Chapter Three "Coupled Peel and Shear Stress-Diffusion Model for Adhesively Bonded Single Lap Joints" presents an analytical model for the bond-line peel and shear stresses due to tensile-shear load considering the moisture diffusion effect subjected to shear tensile load. In the presented analytical model the effect of bending of single lap joint under a shear tensile load is considered. It is, also, assumed that upper and lower adherends are similar in terms of material and geometry. For various moisture exposure time the peel and shear stresses distribution along the single lap joint bonding area is explored. Finally, the finite element simulation is compared with presented analytical model. Chapter Four "Coupled Peel and Shear Stress-Diffusion Model for Dissimilar Material Adhesively Bonded Single Lap Joints presents an analytical model for the bond-line peel and shear stresses due to tensile-shear load considering the moisture diffusion effect subjected to shear tensile load. In the presented analytical model the adherends dissimilarity along with effect of bending of single lap joint under a shear tensile load is considered. For various duration of moisture exposure time the peel and shear stresses distribution along the single lap joint bonding area is explored. At the end, the finite element simulation is compared with presented analytical model. Chapter Five "Coupled Elasto-Plastic Diffusion Model for Predicting Cohesive Failure of Adhesively Bonded Single Lap Joints" present an analytical model to predict the failure load of the single lap joint considering moisture diffusion effect. In the presented analytical model the cohesive is assumed to be as the single lap joint is failure. The results explore the various moisture diffusion time on shear strength of adhesively bonded single lap joint. Chapter Six "Cyclic Moistrue Testing of Adhesively-Bonded Single Lap Joints" illustrated effect of cyclic salt fug (sic) spray on the mechanical performance composite-based lightweight material single lap joints using experimental and finite element methods. Equations for two-dimensional quadrilateral elements with linear and quadratic shape functions are given. Formula for applying the technique in conjuction with three-dimensional solid elements as well as plate/shell elements are also provided. Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.

Book Numerical Analysis of Adhesively Bonded Single Lap Joints Under High Speed Tensile Loading

Download or read book Numerical Analysis of Adhesively Bonded Single Lap Joints Under High Speed Tensile Loading written by Sean M. McCann and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adhesively bonded joints pose complex solid mechanics problems through their inherent variations; material properties dependent on fabrication, stress singularities created by geometry of bonded structural assembly, and in a non-uniform state of stress when loaded. When testing adhesives at high strain rates additional variations are observed; particularly in strength. It is hypothesized that a non-uniform field of constitutive relations exists in an adhesive lap joint, owing to the strain rate sensitivity of the adhesive material. This study investigates the non-uniform distribution of strain rate in the overlap region of ASTM D3165 and D5656 single lap joint (SLJ) specimens, and how the strain rate sensitivity of the adhesive affects the stress distribution when the joint is subjected to varying tensile loading speeds. The numerical method of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has been used to analyze the joint. Commercially available LS-DYNA implicit dynamics solver and one of its standard material formulations, *MAT_19_STRAIN_ RATE_DEPENDENT_PLASTICITY, were implemented to model incremental stiffness as a function of effective strain rate, within the adhesive lap joint. This thesis reports strain rates at various locations in the adhesive overlap for four test speeds, from 25.4 mm/s to 1270 mm/s. Results of stress distributions of the joint are presented comparing the relative effects of using strain rate insensitive and strain rate sensitive material models. Comparative results show that while the force vs. displacement curves show negligible change, strain rate levels and stresses at the bondline edge increase significantly with test speed. As this location is known to be site of failure initiation, these results indicate this may be an underlying mechanism controlling or at least affecting failure strengths of adhesive joints tested at high loading rates.

Book Peridynamic Differential Operator for Numerical Analysis

Download or read book Peridynamic Differential Operator for Numerical Analysis written by Erdogan Madenci and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the peridynamic (PD) differential operator, which enables the nonlocal form of local differentiation. PD is a bridge between differentiation and integration. It provides the computational solution of complex field equations and evaluation of derivatives of smooth or scattered data in the presence of discontinuities. PD also serves as a natural filter to smooth noisy data and to recover missing data. This book starts with an overview of the PD concept, the derivation of the PD differential operator, its numerical implementation for the spatial and temporal derivatives, and the description of sources of error. The applications concern interpolation, regression, and smoothing of data, solutions to nonlinear ordinary differential equations, single- and multi-field partial differential equations and integro-differential equations. It describes the derivation of the weak form of PD Poisson’s and Navier’s equations for direct imposition of essential and natural boundary conditions. It also presents an alternative approach for the PD differential operator based on the least squares minimization. Peridynamic Differential Operator for Numerical Analysis is suitable for both advanced-level student and researchers, demonstrating how to construct solutions to all of the applications. Provided as supplementary material, solution algorithms for a set of selected applications are available for more details in the numerical implementation.
