This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BACKGROUND: Service-learning programs have shown to be effective for college students to develop positive attitudes toward people with disabilities. Such positive attitudes are particularly important for Kinesiology major students as they are trained to become future health and fitness professionals. Due to COVID-19 pandemic disruption, most in-person service-learning programs were transformed into virtual platforms. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of a 16-week in-person and virtual service-learning programs on Kinesiology major students' attitudes toward people with disabilities (ATPD). METHODS: A total of 100 Kinesiology undergraduate students completed in this intervention study with 33 students in In-person program, 34 in virtual program, and 33 in control. Each participant assisted community members with disabilities in 50-minute therapeutic exercise sessions twice a week for 16 weeks under clinical supervision via in-person or virtual platform. The control group attended non-service learning Kinesiology course. Changes in students' attitudes toward people with disabilities were measured by using the Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons Scale (ATDP) (Yuker, 1966), which was administered online before and after the 16-week intervention. RESULTS: A 3x2 mixed model ANOVA showed significant group x time interaction (p

Book excerpt: Ableism, or the systemic inequality imposed onto people with disabilities (PWD), is a rampant problem in U.S. society. Ableism is particularly problematic within the allied health fields in which PWD often experience marginalization and lack of quality care. One area of intervention is to examine the education of future allied healthcare practitioners in fields that prepare aspiring health and wellness advocates, including Kinesiology (KIN). The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes and perceptions toward PWD among KIN students and to determine what their experience might reveal about ableism in KIN education. A qualitative design utilizing semi structured interview with phenomenological approach was employed. Through the use of Disability Critical Race Studies, or DisCrit, 20 KIN students were interviewed regarding their perceptions and attitudes towards PWD and their experiences in KIN education in relation to the topic of disability. Interview data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Thematic analysis yielded three themes: (1) Prejudice towards PWD, (2) Discrimination towards PWD, and (3) Structural ableism within KIN education. Participants expressed many positive beliefs about PWD, yet closer analysis revealed use of deficit language, microaggressions, discrimination, and ableism within KIN curriculum. This study makes a significant contribution to scholarship by highlighting that KIN students' might possess ableist attitudes and perceptions towards PWD that are not challenged and might be perpetuated by their exposure to able-bodied curriculum. Further, this study highlights the need to raise awareness of ableism within KIN, the importance of disability cultural competency, and the need to develop anti-ableist KIN education.

Book Reflexivity and Change in Adaptive Physical Activity

Download or read book Reflexivity and Change in Adaptive Physical Activity written by Donna Goodwin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative and challenging book argues for the vital importance of critical self-reflexion in the field of adaptive physical activity (APA). It makes a powerful case for embracing discussions of the harm caused by ableist assumptions of the ideal body, maximizing capabilities and perfecting normative-based movement that dominate contemporary discourse in APA, and calls for more critical introspection about what APA is, how it is performed, and what might be needed to bring a collaborative relational ethic to this field. The book focuses on two key themes. Firstly, how ableism as a foundational belief system of APA is present in the undergraduate curriculum, professional preparation, professional practice, and organizational policies. Secondly, how to make the comfortable uncomfortable by openly debating the harm that results from non-reflexive (nondisabled) hubris in APA. The goal is to spark an exchange of ideas among scholars, practitioners, and organizational leaders and therefore to shift the paradigm from one of professional expertism to one that centres disability wisdom holders, bringing a fundamental change to how we perform adaptive physical activity. This book is important, progressive reading for anybody with an interest in adaptive physical activity, adapted physical education, disability sport, inclusive education, the philosophy and ethics of disability and sport, or disability in wider society.
