Book Establishment Method and Seeding Date Effects on Alfalfa Yield and Quality

Download or read book Establishment Method and Seeding Date Effects on Alfalfa Yield and Quality written by Michael Dean Hoy and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weed control during alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) establishment is a primary concern of Midwest forage producers. Companion crops, such as oat (Avena sativa L.), have been used for alfalfa establishment to increase first year forage yields and decrease weed pressure and erosion risk. Using herbicides to establish alfalfa without a companion crop has also been effective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate eight establishment methods and determine their influence on dry matter production, botanical composition and herbage quality during the establishment year and the year following establishment.

Book Overseeding and Companion Cropping in Alfalfa

Download or read book Overseeding and Companion Cropping in Alfalfa written by W. Mick Canevari and published by UCANR Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfalfa is considered the “queen of forages” because it is high yielding, high in forage quality, a persistent perennial, and resistant to many pests and diseases. Because of these qualities, alfalfa is not a crop that is typically thought to benefit from overseeding or companion cropping. However, overseeding can enhance your yield and the quality of your stand, and companion cropping may hold significant pest-management advantages. Find out when and why you may want to overseed or companion crop to reap these benefits. Inside you’ll find information on: • Factors to consider for overseeding including selecting the right species • Seeding dates and rates for various crops used in overseeding • Harvest compatibility • Risks and benefits of companion cropping • Various possible companion crops • Pest interactions in mixed alfalfa crops • Quality, market and economic considerations of mixed alfalfa crops This concise, easy-to-use, 31-page guide is profusely illustrated with 31 color photographs and 12 tables.

Other issues that are dealt with include various criteria and measurement procedures for assessing forage nutritive quality, potential health hazards associated with particular plants and plant toxins, and various issues of plant growth, pest control, and soil fertility--among other topics. This book is essential for any institution with a strong program in range sciences, animal sciences, animal feeding and nutrition, and related programs. Synthesizes and summarizes a vast and widely dispersed literature in animal science Serves as a reference for managers of harvested forages as well as all those involved with the forage production industry
