Book Effect of Seed Mass on Early Seedling Growth of Five Eastern White Pine Pinus Strobus L Families Under Contrasting Light Environments

Download or read book Effect of Seed Mass on Early Seedling Growth of Five Eastern White Pine Pinus Strobus L Families Under Contrasting Light Environments written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide variation in initial spatial patterns of natural regeneration of eastern white pine between managed & undisturbed white pine forests of the Great Lakes region has been attributed to differences in understory light levels and the frequency of substrates suitable for germination & seedling establishment. This paper describes a greenhouse study of the interaction of seed mass & light on early white pine which was undertaken to explore the potential influence of seed mass on these observed patterns. Seedlings of five families differing in mean seed mass were grown for 8 & 14 weeks under moderate & low light conditions representing managed & undisturbed pine stands respectively. The results suggest whether differential recruitment of white pine in managed & undisturbed stands is related to variation in seed mass.

Book Planting Site Shade Local Seed Source

Download or read book Planting Site Shade Local Seed Source written by Raymond E. Graber and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2The purpose of our study was to examine some of the factors that influence seedling emergence and seedling survival of direct-seeded white pine (Pinus strobus L.). Our major concern was the response of white pine to a particular set of growing conditions on the seedling emergence pattern, on seedling survival, and on the causes of seedling mortality. S3.

Book Guidelines for Producing Quality Longleaf Pine Seeds

Download or read book Guidelines for Producing Quality Longleaf Pine Seeds written by James P. Barnett and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) seeds are sensitive to damage during collection, processing, treatment, and storage. High-quality seeds are essential for successfully producing nursery crops that meet management goals and perform well in the field. Uniformity in the production of pine seedlings primarily depends on prompt and uniform seed germination, early seedling establishment, and a variety of cultural practices that are applied as the seedlings develop. The best collecting, handling, and processing methods maximize performance attributes and reduce the need for extensive nursery cultural practices to compensate for poor seed quality. Guidelines are presented that will help seed dealers, orchard managers, and nursery personnel produce high-quality longleaf pine seeds and improve the efficiency of nursery production.

Book Effect of Selection on Shoot Elongation Rhythm of Eastern White Pine Pinus Strobus L and Its Implications to Seed Transfer in Ontario

Download or read book Effect of Selection on Shoot Elongation Rhythm of Eastern White Pine Pinus Strobus L and Its Implications to Seed Transfer in Ontario written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the relationships between accumulated shoot increment & growth rhythm variables for 2-year-old greenhouse-grown seedlings and 7-year-old field trees belonging to 112 natural populations of eastern white pine in Ontario. The shoot elongation curves were fitted with a logistic function for individual seedlings & trees, from which several shoot elongation rhythm variables were predicted. The effects of within-population selection for increased growth on the shoot elongation rhythm variables were studied at different selection intensities. Based on the results, implications for transfer of seed to other geographic regions for reforestation programs are discussed.
