Book Self Etching Primers and Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets

Download or read book Self Etching Primers and Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets written by Amit Goyal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-etching primers are the latest addition to the armamentarium of an orthodontist. Their main advantage is that they reduce the number of steps required in the bonding of orthodontic brackets. However, their low ph was a cause of concern. This book describes a study undertaken to see the effects of ph of self-etchant on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. These shear bond strengths were also compared to those obtained with a conventional 3-step bonding system. It was found that self-etching primers not only reduce the chair time in an orthodontist's clinic but also reduce the amount of enamel lost during etching. The bond strength achieved was less than that of the conventional bonding system but was acceptable for orthodontic purposes. Thus self-etching primers are an important and useful invention for simplifying the most critical step in orthodontic clinic- bonding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of orthodontic materials in the past 5 decades has been a unique progress curve characterized by periods of intense activity with many developments followed by long quiescent intervals. An example of the delay in adopting the advances in dentistry might well be illustrated by the acid-etching technique, which was introduced in the mid 1950s1 and became universally accepted in the 1960s. It took more than a decade for this practice to become standard procedure in orthodontics on a large scale. Infact, orthodontic bonding has advanced more in last 10 years than previous 25. In the past decade, we have witnessed unprecedented progress in bonding to enamel with various materials techniques and auxiliaries involving glass ionomer bonding, self-etching primers, and new, powerful light-curing sources, along with self-ligating brackets and a different treatment concept, the Invisalign technique.

Book Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength Using Self etching Primer with Or Without Pumice Or Acid Etch Pretreatment

Download or read book Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength Using Self etching Primer with Or Without Pumice Or Acid Etch Pretreatment written by Ana Paula DeCastro and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets to enamel in four bonding protocols: SEP without prior pumicing (None), Pre-etch and SEP without prior pumicing (Pre-etch), control: SEP with prior pumicing (Pumice), and Pre-etch and SEP with prior pumicing (Both). 80 extracted bovine incisors were randomly divided into 4 groups of 20, and brackets were bonded under the different experimental conditions. Debonding force was measured with an Instron universal testing machine. A two-way ANOVA comparing the four groups indicated that there was a significant difference in debonding force (P = 0.001). The SEP without prior pumicing group (17.69 " 7.18 MPa) was statistically different from the SEP group with prior pumicing (25.82 " 6.84 MPa). There was no statistical difference found among the other groups. Differences in the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) were analyzed by chi-square. ARI scores differed significantly (P =0.0048).

Book The Effect of Phosphoric Acid Etch in Conjunction with Self etching Primer on Enamel Surfaces and Resultant Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength

Download or read book The Effect of Phosphoric Acid Etch in Conjunction with Self etching Primer on Enamel Surfaces and Resultant Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength written by Michael Bruce Olsen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the methods of preparing the enamel surface for orthodontic bracket adhesion in overcoming pellicle and possible fluid contamination from prebonding cleaning techniques and the effect of these treatments on the enamel surface and resultant bond strength. Shear bond strength testing, Raman linear mapping, and scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate shear bond strength, depth of resin interface, and surface and cross-sectional characteristics respectively. Based on an analysis of variance (a=.05), there was a significant effect of pretreatment enamel conditioning prior to self-etching primer application on shear bond strength. This difference was found to exist solely between the pumice prophylaxis group and the 34% phosphoric acid etch group. No difference was found to exist across all groups with regards to depth of resin penetration. Scanning electron microscopy showed no significant differences in enamel surface or resin/enamel interface characteristics. Results suggest that enamel cleaning techniques prior to SEP application are unnecessary and even deleterious to bond strength and resin penetration.

Book Bond Strengths of Orthodontic Brackets Using 3 Etching Techniques

Download or read book Bond Strengths of Orthodontic Brackets Using 3 Etching Techniques written by Shilpa Jamenis and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was carried out to evaluate and compare the shear bond strengths between the orthodontic bracket and acid etched enamel, enamel treated with self-etch primer and laser irradiated enamel and to analyze the interface of the enamel bracket bond.It will help students, teachers and othodontia practitioners as it deals with the most contemporarily used bonding techniques. The results indicate that the shear bond strength of all the three groups was clinically acceptable with no significant difference between them but more adhesive was left on enamel treated with acid and laser as compared to self-etch primer treated enamel.

Book Alternative Orthodontic Bonding Protocol Using Self Etching Primer

Download or read book Alternative Orthodontic Bonding Protocol Using Self Etching Primer written by Rush-Baker G. Caldwell and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the current study was to develop a bonding method that can achieve clinically acceptable bond strength values while leaving a minimum amount of adhesive on the tooth surface during the debonding process. One hundred teeth were randomly assigned into groups. Five different enamel surface preparation protocols were tested (N = 20, each): Conventional acid etch, standard SEP, SEP applied with a light brush stroke (altered SEP 1), SEP applied directly to the composite of pre-coated bracket (altered SEP 2), and Primer Only groups. Brackets were debonded using an Instron universal testing machine (Instron, Canton, MA) in shear mode and the mean shear bond strength values were calculated. In addition, enamel surfaces were examined under light microscope to determine the location of failure using ARI. The Primer Only group had significantly lower mean shear strength (0.14 MPa, P0.05) than the conventional acid etch (13.81 MPa), standard SEP (12.10 MPa), altered SEP 1 (10.80 MPa), and altered SEP 2 (11.48 MPa) groups. The conventional acid etch, standard SEP, altered SEP 1 and altered SEP 2 groups were not significantly different from each other (p0.05). With respect to ARI values, there was a significant difference among these four groups. 85% of samples in the altered SEP 2 group had 10% or less composite resin left on their surfaces. This group had also a mean shear bond strength value of 11.43 MPa, significantly above the minimal strength needed for orthodontic attachment bonding, and the lowest ARI values overall. Therefore, application of SEP directly to the composite resin of the pre-coated brackets may be an ideal bonding method by providing adequate bond strength and leaving a minimum amount of composite resin on the tooth surface during debonding. It should be kept in mind that future in-vivo studies would be needed to confirm the findings obtained from the current in-vitro study.

Book In Vitro Investigation Into Bond Strength of Metal and Ceramic Orthodontic Brackets

Download or read book In Vitro Investigation Into Bond Strength of Metal and Ceramic Orthodontic Brackets written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AIM: 1. To determine in vitro bond strength of metal and ceramic orthodontic brackets when using etch and separate primer, or self-etching primer (SEP) 2. To assess remaining adhesive following removal of orthodontic bracket METHOD: 180 previously extracted teeth were randomly allocated to one of six test groups. Each was subjected to either separate etch and primer or SEP and then bonded with an orthodontic bracket. These were metal (3M Unitek Victory), metal reinforced ceramic (3M Unitek Clarity) and poly-crystalline ceramic (3M Unitek Transcend). Samples were stored at 37 degrees C for 24 hours. Each bracket was debonded using shear force applied by the Instron Universal testing machine. Samples were examined under x10 light microscopy and allocated an Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) score. RESULTS: Variation in shear bond strength (SBS) was seen across all groups. Lowest SBS was recorded with Victory series brackets bonded with SEP (7.08 MPa) and the highest was with Clarity series brackets bonded with separate etch and primer (15.96 MPa). Pooled data showed significantly higher SBS with separate etch and primer than SEP (T=2.83, p

Download or read book Influence of Orthodontic Bracket Bonding Protocol on Zirconia Ceramics and Resulting Bond Strength Adhesive Remnant and Debonded Polished Zirconia Surface Roughness written by Kaylee Anne Bergman and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: This study evaluated the effect of primer protocol for metal orthodontic brackets bonded to zirconia ceramic and resulting shear bond strength (SBS), adhesive remnant index (ARI), and debonded and polished zirconia surface roughness. Methods: Zirconia specimens were milled, glazed, embedded in acrylic resin and the target area microetched with aluminum oxide. Glazed and microetched representative specimens were evaluated with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Specimens were randomly assigned to primer protocol, enamel (TransbondTM Plus Self-Etching Primer) or zirconia (Assure® Plus), and primed according to manufacturer instructions. Metal orthodontic brackets were bonded to the primed surface with resin adhesive (Transbond XTTM) and light cured. To simulate intraoral conditions, all primer and bonding protocols took place in an environmental chamber set at 33±2°C and 75±5% humidity followed by a 24-hour dark cure at 37 C. Following SBS testing, an ARI value was assigned to debonded brackets. Residual adhesive was removed from the debonded zirconia specimens, the zirconia surface polished, and surface roughness measured using a profilometer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed for qualitative evaluation of the zirconia surface. Results: Zirconia substructure exposure by aluminum oxide microetching was verified with EDS. A significantly lower (p
