Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political violence is violence outside of state control that is politically motivated. Some political scientists see political violence as part of "contentious politics" or collective political struggle, which includes such things as revolutions, civil war, riots and strikes, but more peaceful protest movements. Crime and warfare share some attributes with political violence, but political scientists do not define them as political violence. Political violence is violence perpetrated by people or governments to achieve political goals. It can describe violence used by a state against other states or against non-state actors. It can also describe politically motivated violence by non-state actors against a state or against other non-state actors. Political violence is violence perpetrated by people or governments to achieve political goals. At other times, governments use force in order to defend their country from outside invasion or other threats of force and to coerce other governments or conquer territory. For democracy to be at equitable standard and delivery politicians that improve masses welfare and mensch must be informed to vote and hold politicians accountable in the event of any eventual pitfall because most politicians often manage to secure votes by stirring up greed, rivalry, or fear. Improving democracy therefore requires that we must find ways to reduce the role that greed, rivalry and induce fear play in the electoral process, especially in young democracies such as those in Africa. However, the study aimed at determining the causes and level of the effect of political violence in Nigeria and how it can possibly be curtailed since political violence can pose serious threat to the legitimacy of the state, federal elections and the country as a whole.

Book Political Violence and Oil in Africa

Download or read book Political Violence and Oil in Africa written by Zainab Ladan Mai-Bornu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book argues that in order to better understand the undercurrents of the Niger Delta conflict, it is imperative to analyse the dynamics of choice in terms of the distinct courses of action taken by the Ogoni and Ijaw. Given the similar structural constraints, the author considers why the Ogoni adopted nonviolent resistance, and the Ijaw violent resistance. This book is divided into seven chapters starting with an introduction to oil and political violence in African conflicts, and includes a synoptic overview of four other resource-rich countries in Africa. Theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of conflict are then presented with the aim of situating the Niger Delta conflicts within the wider conflict literature. Chapter Three concentrates the discussion on the Nigerian Niger Delta, outlining the core issues at the centre of the contestations. The following three chapters offer an in-depth empirical analysis on the interaction between the narratives on nonviolence versus violence, the nature of leadership styles, and the organisation of the Ogoni and Ijaw movements along with a concluding chapter.

Book Causes And Effect Of Political Thuggery In Nigeria

Download or read book Causes And Effect Of Political Thuggery In Nigeria written by Umar Lawal Aliyu and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-11-29 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines and assesses causes and effects of political thuggery in Nigeria. This paper discusses the ugly phenomenon of thuggery in the body politics of Nigeria. It critically examines the reasons for the prevalent incidences of political thuggery in Nigeria. Thuggery is violent behaviour, especially of a criminal nature. "A cowardly act of mindless thuggery "the Nigerian political scene has experienced violence and thuggery in varying degrees. Ruffians hired or instigated by politicians to intimidate their opponents define thuggery as an act of violence or behaviour. It is therefore safe to say that thuggery in Nigerian politics is a means to an end. This paper discusses in detail the menace of political thuggery in Nigeria's democratic system. It critically examines the reasons for the widespread incidences of thuggery in the country, especially during political campaigns for elective offices, and periods of general elections, and even re-run elections as Nigeria's political system is characterized by thuggery, violence, harassment etc. Overall, political thuggery is characterized by robbery, intimidation, gangersterism, murder, physical assault and often involves physical combat between two opposing gangs or groups, which ultimately generates inter-personal or group hostilities. Since the pre-independence General Elections of 1959, politics in Nigeria has been characterized by thuggery and violence. The study reveals that poverty, unemployment, financial attractiveness of elective positions, the value system of wealth accumulation, and an ineffective security agency account for the incidence of political thuggery in Nigeria. Political thuggery hinders public accountability of elective officers and thus is a bane to good governance in Nigeria. Relying on secondary data, the theoretical mode of analysis was adopted in order to understand that ethical issues, party intrigues, as well as political violence became so prevalent in the electioneering process in Nigeria and called for sober reflection. It is in the light of this that this paper believes that political Thuggery has brought a lot of conflicts in Nigeria among ethnicities, nations, religions and tribes.

This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of its history, Nigeria has witnessed sporadic episodes of insecurity; a phenomenon traditionally manifested in political, electoral, religious and ethnic violence, and, more recently, terrorism. This book investigates the core issues that have led to, and shaped the development and sustenance of, organised political violence in Nigeria. Focusing on elite political culture and State governance, it examines important elements of the socio-political environment, including zero-sum politics, identity politics, and the politicisation of social cleavages. As such, it represents an invaluable resource on the issue of organised political violence too often glossed over in research on insecurity in Nigeria. Scholars in security studies and national security policy analysts will find this text enlightening.

Book Political Violence and National Development

Download or read book Political Violence and National Development written by Omale Theophilus Ocholi and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the violent and shameless turnout, millions of Nigerians have been denied their right to choose their political leaders. The struggle for democratic offices by politicians is often violently manipulated on the street by a gang of thugs, recruited by same politicians, trained and to help them capture power. Political violence has been a bone of contention from the inception of Nigeria as a Nation-State. The impact of political violence cannot be over emphasized as its effects have grossly affected National Development. This research tries to proffer solutions to the factors that give rise to political violence in Nigeria, to determine the impacts of violence on the political, social and economic development in Nigeria, to attempt strategic and recommendable actions to remedy the problem of political violence in Nigeria. One of the recommendations is thus: Political parties should evolve as mechanism of democratic governance rather than servicing as an organized criminal enterprise used for seeking, gaining and retaining power in order to rob public treasury. The culture of impunity that encourages political violence should be discouraged by scrupulous enforcement of laws prohibiting political violence and illegal arms trade, possession and use. The Federal Government should also create more employment opportunities for the youths as well as alleviating poverty and illiteracy both the rural and urban areas.
