Book Evaluation of Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation C Accumulation P Nutrition and Grain Yield quality in Ratooned Pigeonpea Cajanus Cajan L Millspaugh Genotypes

Download or read book Evaluation of Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation C Accumulation P Nutrition and Grain Yield quality in Ratooned Pigeonpea Cajanus Cajan L Millspaugh Genotypes written by Kagiso Mamashela Murwa and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high nutritional value of pigeon pea explains its importance in the diet of smallholder farmers in Africa. Pigeon pea grain is used in many forms. Pigeon pea is consumed mainly as dhal (split-grain) by the Asian community in South Africa, while the African population uses the dry grain. The leaves and stems of pigeonpea serve as an excellent feed for livestock or as fuel wood. Low soil N often limits plant growth and symbiotic N2-fixation offers opportunity to overcome low soil N levels for increased crop yield. However, N is also known to be the most commonly deficient nutrient in soils. Biological N2-fixation is therefore a cheaper source of N for improving crop yields. Because symbiotic systems contribute great amounts of N input into natural and agricultural ecosystems, legume N2-fixation is considered cheaper source of N for poor farmers. It is also more sustainable and environmentally friendly compared to fertilizer N. Nitrogen-fixing microorganisms therefore provide an alternative to inorganic fertilisers which are expensive and not easily accessible to poor rural farmers. This study evaluated plant growth and symbiotic performance C accumulation, P nutrition and grain yield/quality in ratooned pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan L. Millspaugh) genotypes obtained from international crops research institute for semi-arid tropics.

Book Bambara groundnut Utilization and Future Prospects

Download or read book Bambara groundnut Utilization and Future Prospects written by Victoria A. Jideani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bambara groundnut (BGN) or Vigna subterranea is an extremely hardy grain legume. As it produces reasonable yields even under conditions of drought and low soil fertility, it is also a climate-smart crop. Previously underutilized, BGN is the subject of growing interest among researchers and consumers for its balanced nutritional profile. Indigenous consumers of BGN report medicinal benefits from the plant; however, such knowledge is at risk of being lost with the urbanization and changing lifestyles of younger generations. To date, there is no comprehensive resource on the Bambara groundnut, despite market demand for plant proteins around the globe. Authored by scientists who have researched and developed patents using BGN, Bambara Groundnut: Utilization and Future Prospects aims to fill this gap. The text provides in-depth coverage on breeding, food and feed utilization, medicinal benefits and future research prospects. Drawing on both indigenous knowledge and cutting-edge research, Bambara Groundnut is the first book to fully explore the potential of this remarkable crop.

Book Wheat Growth and Modelling

Download or read book Wheat Growth and Modelling written by W. Day and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985-05-01 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of using mathematical models to investigate crop growth and productivity has attracted much attention in recent years. A major reason is that modelling can allow an expert in one area to assess the impact of his ideas in the light of other advances in our understanding of crop performance. Whether or not many of the claims made for or the demands made of models can ever be satisfied, this role as a focus for quantitative definition of crop growth is an important one. One consequence is that the development and appraisal of such models requires the efforts of scientists from a wide range of disciplines. This NATO Advanced Research workshop was designed to bring together such a range of scientists to consider the wheat crop, and assess our understanding of the crop and our ability to model its growth and yield. The ideas and organization behind the workshop involved many people. The U. K. interest in a computer model of wheat growth was instigated by Dr. Joe Landsberg (then of Long Ashton Research Station, but now Director of CSIRO Division of Forest Research), who in 1979 started a modelling exercise as part of a collaborative study of the causes of yield variation in winter wheat, involving four research institutes supported by the Agricultural and Food Research Council. Book Pulse Improvement

Download or read book Pulse Improvement written by Shabir Hussain Wani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in molecular biology and genome research in the form of molecular breeding and genetic engineering put forward innovative prospects for improving productivity of many pulses crops. Pathways have been discovered, which include regulatory elements that modulate stress responses (e.g., transcription factors and protein kinases) and functional genes, which guard the cells (e.g., enzymes for generating protective metabolites and proteins). In addition, numerous quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with elevated stress tolerance have been cloned, resulting in the detection of critical genes for stress tolerance. Together these networks can be used to enhance stress tolerance in pulses. This book summarizes recent advances in pulse research for increasing productivity, improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and enhancing nutritional quality.
