Book Effects of Underloads on Fatigue Crack Growth

Download or read book Effects of Underloads on Fatigue Crack Growth written by W. M. McGee and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of single overload-underload interaction on constant amplitude crack growth in 2219-T851 aluminum alloy are characterized in terms of delay cycles, affected zone sizes and overload shut-off ratios. Data are presented showing the effects of overload-underload/underload-overload sequences, overload magnitude, underload magnitude, and the constant amplitude maximum and minimum. The effects of hold periods in both tension and compression are also experimentally investigated. Delay cycle data are correlated with predictions from three different crack growth retardation models; namely the generalized Wheeler model, the generalized Willenborg model and the Grumman closure model. For each model, predictions are made using an assumed plastic zone radius and diameter for both plane stress and plane strain conditions and model comparisons are made. Correlations of measured affected zone sizes with the four different assumed plastic zone sizes are also presented. Sensitivities of the generalized Wheeler and generalized Willenborg models to overload shut- off ratio and threshold stress intensity factor are determined. Prediction sensitivity to three different crack growth equations for the 2219-T851 aluminum alloy is also evaluated. Recommendations for future work in development of crack growth retardation models are presented.

Book The Effect of Periodic Overloads on Flight by flight Fatigue Crack Growth Rates

Download or read book The Effect of Periodic Overloads on Flight by flight Fatigue Crack Growth Rates written by Margery A. Dean and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life prediction of aerospace structures subjected to service loading conditions can be complex and expensive. Fortunately, many flight-by- flight loadings can be analyzed as constant amplitude loading if the variability in crack growth rate is low. A test program was designed such that the stress intensity factor (Kmax) was held constant by uniformly reducing the load as the fatigue crack grew. With a constant Kmax, the crack growth rate remains constant throughout the life of the test. The baseline fatigue crack growth rate variability was established for the 7075-T6 center-cracked panels under a flight-by-flight load history. The effect of introducing overloads to the baseline flight history on the crack growth rate variability was reported. The results indicate that the delay region for the applied 114% overloads was predicted by Irwin's plastic zone model and was equal to 0.0382 inches which was equal to 225 flights. The delay behavior was consistent for the several overload conditions that were studied. When the occurrence of overload increased, the fatigue crack growth decreased. The standard error of estimate remained relatively constant, suggesting that a block approach to life prediction is feasible for flight-by-flight load history.

Other topics include mixed-mode fracture and materials testing and selection for damage tolerant design, alongside in-depth discussions of ensuring structural integrity of components through real-world examples. There is a strong focus throughout the book on the practical applications of fracture mechanics. It provides a clear description of the theoretical aspects of fracture mechanics and also its limitations. Appendices provide additional background to ensure a comprehensive understanding and every chapter includes solved example problems and unsolved end of chapter problems. Additional instructor support materials are also available.

Book Entropy Based Fatigue Fracture Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring

Download or read book Entropy Based Fatigue Fracture Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring written by Cemal Basaran and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally fatigue, fracture, damage mechanics are predictions are based on empirical curve fitting models based on experimental data. However, when entropy is used as the metric for degradation of the material, the modeling process becomes physics based rather than empirical modeling. Because, entropy generation in a material can be calculated from the fundamental equation of thematerial. This collection of manuscripts is about using entropy for "Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring". The theoretical paper in the collection provides the mathematical and physics framework behind the unified mechanics theory, which unifies universal laws of motion of Newton and laws of thermodynamics at ab-initio level. Unified Mechanics introduces an additional axis called, Thermodynamic State Index axis which is linearly independent from Newtonian space x, y, z and time. As a result, derivative of displacement with respect to entropy is not zero, in unified mechanics theory, as in Newtonian mechanics. Any material is treated as a thermodynamic system and fundamental equation of the material is derived. Fundamental equation defines entropy generation rate in the system. Experimental papers in the collection prove validity of using entropy as a stable metric for Fatigue, Fracture, Failure Prediction and Structural Health Monitoring.

Book The Measurement of Crack Tip Stresses by X ray Diffraction

Download or read book The Measurement of Crack Tip Stresses by X ray Diffraction written by John Edmond Allison and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ensure the structural integrity of present day structures subjected to variable amplitude cyclic stress histories, a knowledge of the crack tip stress field is important. In this investigation, crack tip stresses were measured in specimens of 1020 and 1045 steel using a semi-automatic x-ray diffraction technique. Crack tip residual stresses were measured in the unloaded condition and crack tip 'applied' stresses were measured under load. It was observed that, for the alloys tested and within the confines of stress analysis by x-ray diffraction, a dependence exists for the maximum crack tip residual stress on the level of the previous stress intensity factor and also for the maximum crack tip 'applied' stress on the level of the applied stress intensity. This is in sharp contrast to theoretical models of the crack tip stress fields which predict an independence between crack tip stresses and stress intensity levels. Crack tip stresses were observed relative to the fatigue crack growth retardation process. Post overload crack tip stresses were greatly reduced from their pre-overload levels. Limited studies indicated that crack growth, after an overload, had little or no effect on the overload-induced crack tip residual stress distribution. Measurements taken at applied loads, indicated that portions of the material behind the tip of the extended crack were in compression while areas ahead of the extended crack were in tension. These results were considered in light of possible retardation mechanisms.

Book Fatigue of Structures and Materials

Download or read book Fatigue of Structures and Materials written by J. Schijve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.
