Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term organic soil ordinarily refers to combinations of weathered rock products and partially decayed plant matter. The organic fraction tends to dominate soil physical properties for organic contents in excess of 20 percent by weight. To simulate these materials and to include precise control over organic content, fiber type and size, and mineral type, kaolinite and pulp fibers were used to prepare model organic soils. For comparison, kaolinite and all fiber samples were included. The effect of organic material on soil shear strength is shown in terms of consolidation and stress-strain behavior, undrained shear strength, and the shear strength parameters c' and ?'. Decomposition effects on vane shear strength are reported for selected soil samples and one consolidation pressure.

Book excerpt: "The effect of strain rate on the shearing properties of an organic A̲ horizon Bryce clay and the same soil treated with hydrogen peroxide to remove the organic matter was studied. For both soils, the pore pressures were found to be independent of strain rate, and dependent only on the increment of strain during shear. The effect of the hydrogen peroxide treatment on the shear properties of an inorganic Bryce B̲ horizon clay was also studied. It was concluded that the hydrogen peroxide does not affect the mineral properties of the Bryce clay and serves only to selectively remove organic matter from the A̲ horizon Bryce soil. The greater strength of the organic soil over the same soil treated to remove the organic matter was also demonstrated. The hypothesis was offered that the organic matter creates an adhesive, compressible bond which produces a resistant soil structure in an organic clay soil subjected to shear"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: X-ray examinations of fine-grained soils from the Lower Mississippi Valley revealed numerous geologic features that are not visible to the unaided eye. These features include significant fracture patterns, details of planar bedding, cross-laminations and turbulence, secondary mineralizations, root penetrations and voids left by roots, the presence of disseminated organic matter and other details. These geologic features affect the strength properties of the soils in which they occur. Experiments with multiple specimens from single samples embodying different features demonstrated that many large variations in strength properties were not only directly dependent of these features but were predictable in a relative sense. Normally, these features are never identified during routine soils testing although the effects of these features contribute to erratic test results. Pretest radiographic examination is a potential means of avoiding these problems. (Author).

Book excerpt: Compared with forces occurring in soil mechanics problems in civil engineering, the forces that are applied to soil in farming operations generally have a short duration, less than a few seconds, a small loaded area, no more than a few square decimeters, and small intensities, 10 bar being a high value. On the other hand, soil properties vary widely between those of a weak mud and a stone-like dry soil. Tillage and related applications of force to soil are practiced worldwide in farming. Tillage operations are performed on one hectare of land for every three human beings. This means that for the food production for each individual daily, something like one cubic meter of soil is stirred, or about 20 times his body weight. Theoretical knowledge of this most common human activity, which largely determines the surface shape of the fertile part of the earth, is still very limited. In this book the authors have tried to give an outline of the present state of the art. One of the starting points was a course in soil dynamics taught by the authors at the Agricultural University at Wageningen, The Netherlands. We hope to reach interested readers who have no more theoretical knowledge than high school level, as well as readers who want to go beyond the level of a third year university student. Tests were performed on artificially sedimented samples of the untreated, 75 percent untreated, 50 percent untreated, 25 percent untreated, and the treated soil. The effective stress failure envelopes were found to be higher for the untreated soil than that of the treated. The elastic deformation, however, was larger for the untreated samples. The pore water pressure development due to shearing process were found to higher for the treated soil.
