Book Effect of Weld Metal Mismatch on Joint Efficiency and Measured Fracture Toughness

Download or read book Effect of Weld Metal Mismatch on Joint Efficiency and Measured Fracture Toughness written by L. Malik and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture toughness tests of deep-notched and shallow-notched SENB specimens at various sub-zero temperatures were conducted to study the effect of weld metal mismatch on measured fracture toughness. Tensile tests of cross-weld tensile specimens were also conducted to study the effect of weld metal mismatch on joint efficiency. These specimens were machined from butt welds that were fabricated with the same welding consumable and welding procedure using HSLA 100 steel plates heat treated to different tensile strengths. No significant differences were found between the joint efficiencies and ductilities of the cross-weld tensile specimens with overmatching weld metal and those of specimens with up to 9% weld metal undermatch in terms of yield strength (3% in terms of ultimate tensile strength). Furthermore, 100% joint efficiency was still achieved in the cross-weld tensile specimens with intact reinforcements and 17% undermatching weld metal in terms of yield strength (9% in terms of ultimate tensile strength). No correlation was found between the degree of weld metal mismatch and the measured fracture toughness of the SENB specimens.

Book The Effect of Localized Plasticity and Crack Tip Constraint in Undermatched Welds

Download or read book The Effect of Localized Plasticity and Crack Tip Constraint in Undermatched Welds written by GP. Mercier and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four weldments of varying levels of weld joint to baseplate strength (mismatch) were examined to determine the effects of this ratio on fracture performance. Cracks were placed within the weld metal at several ratios of weld fusion margin. This margin is defined as the ratio of crack tip proximity to the weld fusion line and crack length (Lcrk/a). Finite element studies were then performed on each variation of weld fusion margin and mismatch level to determine the crack driving force not accounted for in a typical fracture analysis, which assumes monolithic, homogenous weld metal specimens and ignores the weld/baseplate interaction. Assuming homogenous weld metal specimens results in crack growth resistance behavior that depends on crack tip proximity to the weld fusion line. Once local plasticity and the additional constraint caused by the weld/baseplate interface are included in the analysis, fracture behavior is independent of crack tip proximity to the fusion line up to and slightly beyond initiation. Errors in fracture toughness at weld fusion margins greater than or equal to 1.5 are less than 10% and can reasonably be ignored. Errors at smaller values of Lcrk/a are considerable, and effects of local plastic deformation and constraint must be accounted for in the fracture analysis. Furthermore, uncorrected estimates of initiation toughness (JIC) in specimens where the weld fusion margin are less than 1.5 result in overly conservative estimates. The percentage of weld mismatch was found not to be a major factor in determining either crack growth resistance or crack initiation behavior. An increased propensity toward unstable fracture was observed in specimens with smaller Lcrk/a ratios. This effect may be attributed to a local microstructural defect and requires further study.

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Characterization of HY 100 Under Matched Welds

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Characterization of HY 100 Under Matched Welds written by Stephen M. Graham and published by . This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welds in marine structures are typically fabricated such that the yield strength of the weld metal is higher than the base plate (over-matched). Allowing the weld metal yield strength to be less than the base metal (under- matching) can increase productivity and weld metal toughness; however, there is some concern that under-matching increases the crack driving force and decreases the weld metal tearing resistance. This study examined fracture behavior of two HY-100 under-matched welds under dynamic loading. A new test fixture that provided greater control of specimen deflection during impact testing of SE(B) specimens was developed, as was a procedure for applying the Normalization Method to the analysis of dynamic fracture toughness tests. Successful application of Normalization involved using multiple specimens with varying ductile crack growth to establish the correct form for the plasticity function. The accuracy of the measured J(sub Id) was verified by comparing with multi- specimen J(sub Id) values. The results from these tests showed that the proximity of the crack tip to the fusion line had more effect on fracture behavior than mismatch level. Narrower fusion line margins led to lower tearing resistance and a greater propensity for fracture instability.

Book The Effect of Microstructure on the Fracture Toughness of Low alloy Steels

Download or read book The Effect of Microstructure on the Fracture Toughness of Low alloy Steels written by Syavash Ensha and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model has been used to relate the cleavage fracture toughness of the low-alloy steels to their microstructure. The cleavage fracture toughness of low-alloy steels depends upon three metallurgical parameters: the microscopic cleavage strength, the yield strength, and the effective root radius. Variations in fracture toughness with microstructure can be explained through the effect of the microstructure on these parameters. The major objective of this investigation has been the study of the effect of microstructural variables on these parameters, and hence the effect of microstructure on fracture toughness. The theoretical model for the cleavage fracture toughness of the low-alloy steels can be successfully applied provided the assumptions are not strongly violated. This requires low microscopic cleavage strength/yield strength ratio values and low work-hardening rates. Lower temperatures and higher strain rates both favor these conditions.
