Book excerpt: "Silicone, silane, and mineral oil lubraicating fluids were studied at 700 degrees F under inert and oxidizing atmospheres while in the presence of various individual metals. Physical and chemical changes in the fluids and metals were noted. Fluids studied were two (2) methyl chlorophenyl silicones, a methyl phenyl silicone, a hydrogentaed mineral oil and a silane. Metals used included magnesium, titanium, aluminum, silver, copper brass, bronze, monel steel, stainless steel, copper-beryllium steel, vanadium tool steel, chrome plated steel, cast iron and chrome-molybdenum steel. The siland fluid was the least affected fluid and was alsothe most compatible fluid with metals"--P. iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A current and comprehensive treatment of tribology theory andapplications A solid understanding of tribology is essential for engineers inmany fields working to design and ensure the reliability of machineparts and systems. Principles and Applications of Tribology is thefirst truly broad-based book on this vital subject. Moving frombasic theory to practice, it examines tribology from the integratedviewpoint of mechanical engineering, mechanics, and materialsscience. It offers detailed coverage of the mechanisms of materialwear, friction, and all of the major lubrication techniques--liquids, solids, and gases-- and examines a wide range of bothtraditional and state-of-the-art applications. Based on the author's extensive research and teaching experience inthe areas of tribology, mechanics, and materials science for morethan thirty years, this book emphasizes a contemporary knowledge oftribology that includes the emerging field of micro/nanotribologyand various industrial applications, including cutting-edge topicssuch as magnetic information storage devices andmicroelectromechanical systems. Principles and Applications of Tribology is invaluable formechanical, chemical, and materials engineers involved in productand process design, as well as graduate students and researchers inthese areas.

Book Lubricants from Renewable Feedstocks

Download or read book Lubricants from Renewable Feedstocks written by Subhalaxmi Pradhan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-07-02 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written and edited by a team of industry experts, this exciting new volume covers the field of renewable lubricants, their processing, optimization, end-use application, and their future potential. Biolubricants are a viable alternative to synthetic lubricants because they are produced from organic materials such as plant oils, waste oils and by-products. Renewable biolubricants are the subject of research because of their biodegradability, eco-friendliness, and favorable socioeconomic consequences to counteract imitations of synthetic lubricants. Biolubricants have thus emerged as an ideal substitute for mineral oil-based lubricants, as significant economic and environmental acceptability has been received over the last few decades and it has been estimated that there would be a further steady growth in its demand over the next few decades. Furthermore, biolubricants’ high-quality lubricating properties, high load carrying ability, long service life, and fast biodegradability have expanded the recent interest. These lubricants can be derived from different sources of vegetable oils, non-edible oils, waste cooking oils (WCO) and microbe-derived oils. Among all these sources, the use of WCOs and microbe-derived oils have received immense interest and provide superior quality biolubricants. This outstanding new volume covers the prospects and processing of feedstocks for biolubricants, extraction techniques, new advancements in the field of bio-based lubricants, epoxide lubricants, hydrogenated lubricants, microbial-based biolubricants, nano-biolubricants, polyester-based biolubricants, lubricants from waste oils and waste materials, its economic and environmental acceptability and biorefinery approaches. The book will be helpful to industry professionals and engineers of all types, students, and other stakeholders working in the field of lubricant, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and material science, tribological sectors and biorefinery industries. It will also be of great interest to new start-up companies working in the area of processing feedstocks for biolubricant production and end use application, biorefineries, valorization of biolubricant waste, and in the recycling industries.
