Book excerpt: Purpose of this study was to examine how the menstrual cycle affects rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and running economy during treadmill running, specifically exploring whether a female runner's point in the menstrual cycle might cause them to judge their perceived effort to be higher or lower. Hypotheses included that female athletes would have a higher RPE than male athletes during an equivalent intensity exercise; that the greatest discrepancies between men and women runners would occur when the women were in the pre-menstrual phase of their cycle; that female runners would be the least economical during the pre-menstrual phase. Results of testing 10 well-trained distance runners indicated that only the 80% of VO2max variable differed significantly with runners' gender; the author suggests that perhaps a larger sample size would yield more conclusive results in relating the other variables.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The study was designed to determine the effect of menstrual cycle phase on running economy (RE) at a submaximal intensity for fit endurance runners. Nine subjects completed a VO2peak test followed by two 40 mm submaximal ruris: one during the mid-luteal phase and one during the mid-follicular phase at a velocity equivalent to 80% VO2peak. For the submaximal runs, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), breathing frequency (Fr), heart rate (HR), ventilation (VE), and VO2 were measured at baseline and every 5 mm during the exercise bout. The running velocity was held constant, and therefore the submaximal V02 represented RE. No significant difference (p >.05) was found in RPE, RER, Fr, HR, VE, or RE based on menstrual cycle phase. There was no change in VE at baseline during the mid-luteal phase, possibly due to a lower than expected increase in progesterone levels, suggesting there may be a progesterone threshold level necessary to elicit increases in VE. There is no disadvantage for fit endurance runners physiologically when running at a submaximal intensity based on menstrual cycle phase.
