Book Effect of Low Temperatures on Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Effect of Low Temperatures on Metals and Alloys written by H. W. Russell and published by . This book was released on 1932 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Low temperatures" are understood to be temperatures below ordinary room temperature. This is a region of less interest and slightly less importance than that of high temperatures. In the low-temperature region, changes of state, structural changes and surface modifications are of rare occurrence in metallic substances. Because only slight industrial use is made of materials at low temperatures and because failures in such cases are infrequent, there has been no great demand for knowledge of the properties of materials in this condition of temperature.

Book Low Temperature Properties of Selected Materials

Download or read book Low Temperature Properties of Selected Materials written by Dorothea M. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a bibliography of the work reported in the literature on the effects of low temperature on the properties of structural materials. Some of the newer areas of cryogenic technology such as superconducting machinery involve environments which may subject the components to temperature as low as 4 K. Exposure of structural materials to such low temperatures affects their properties. This bibliography contains 963 references published between 1950-1976, arranged in chronological/alphabetical order. Combined material/property indexes are provided. (Author).

Book Mechanical Properties of Materials at Low Temperatures

Download or read book Mechanical Properties of Materials at Low Temperatures written by D. Wigley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In writing this monograph, the aim has been to consider the mechanical properties of the wide range of materials now available in such a way as to start with the fundamental nature of these properties and to follow the discussion through to the point at which the reader is able to comprehend the significance or otherwise of the large amounts of data now available in design manuals and other compilations. In short, it is hoped that this volume will be used as a companion to these data compilations and as an aid to their interpretation. In attempting to cover such a wide field, a large degree of selection has been necessary, as complete volumes have been written on topics which here have had to be covered in a few pages or less. It is inevitable that not everyone will agree with the choice made, especially if it is his own subject which has been discussed rather briefly, and the author accepts full res ponsibility for the selection made. The book is written at a level which should be easily followed by a university graduate in science or engineer ing, although, if his background has not included a course in materials science, some groundwork may be lacking.

Book Effects of Subatmospheric Temperatures on the Properties of Non Ferrous Metals

Download or read book Effects of Subatmospheric Temperatures on the Properties of Non Ferrous Metals written by Norman L. Mochel and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject assigned to me for consideration at this Symposium may be covered, I believe, in a very simple and rather brief statement. I do not believe that it requires any lengthy presentation of data, for the reason that such data have been well prepared already for all who may be interested. The Joint Research Committee on the Effect of Temperature on the Properties of Metals has summarized data on the effect of low or subatmospheric temperatures on the properties of metals on several occasions. In the 1931 Symposium at Chicago, there was included an excellent review on this subject by H. W. Russell of Battelle Memorial Institute, and here one may find a great deal of information on the effect of low temperatures on the nonferrous metals and alloys.

Book Advances in Cryogenic Engineering

Download or read book Advances in Cryogenic Engineering written by K. D. Timmerhaus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By popular request, the National Bureau of Standards was again a host to a conference on cryogenic engineering on August 19-21, 1957. Similar meetings were held here in 1954 and 1956. The acceptance of over forty papers for this conference was certainly a sign of the increasing activity and interest in this engineering field. There seems little doubt that it will continue to grow, justifying the need for annual meetings. To make the Proceedings more interesting an attempt was made to include as much as possible of the general discussion which followed each paper. Book Austenitic Steels at Low Temperatures

Download or read book Austenitic Steels at Low Temperatures written by T. Horiuchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for alternate energy sources has led to the develop ment of prototype fusion and MHD reactors. Both possible energy systems in current designs usually require the use of magnetic fields for plasma confinement and concentration. For the creation and maintenance of large 5 to 15 tesla magnetic fields, supercon ducting magnets appear more economical. But the high magnetic fields create large forces, and the complexities of the conceptual reactors create severe space restrictions. The combination of re quirements, plus the desire to keep construction costs at a mini mum, has created a need for stronger structural alloys for service at liquid helium temperature (4 K). The complexity of the required structures requires that these alloys be weldable. Furthermore, since the plasma is influenced by magnetic fields and since magnet ic forces from the use of ferromagnetic materials in many configur ations may be additive, the best structural alloy for most applica tions should be nonmagnetic. These requirements have led to consideration of higher strength austenitic steels. Strength increases at low temperatures are achieved by the addition of nitrogen. The stability of the austenitic structure is retained by adding manganese instead of nickel, which is more expensive. Research to develop these higher strength austenitic steels is in process, primarily in Japan and the United States.
