Book Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery

Download or read book Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery written by Patrizio Raffa and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at presenting, describing, and summarizing the latest advances in polymer flooding regarding the chemical synthesis of the EOR agents and the numerical simulation of compositional models in porous media, including a description of the possible applications of nanotechnology acting as a booster of traditional chemical EOR processes. A large part of the world economy depends nowadays on non-renewable energy sources, most of them of fossil origin. Though the search for and the development of newer, greener, and more sustainable sources have been going on for the last decades, humanity is still fossil-fuel dependent. Primary and secondary oil recovery techniques merely produce up to a half of the Original Oil In Place. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes are aimed at further increasing this value. Among these, chemical EOR techniques (including polymer flooding) present a great potential in low- and medium-viscosity oilfields. • Describes recent advances in chemical enhanced oil recovery. • Contains detailed description of polymer flooding and nanotechnology as promising boosting tools for EOR. • Includes both experimental and theoretical studies. About the Authors Patrizio Raffa is Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen. He focuses on design and synthesis of new polymeric materials optimized for industrial applications such as EOR, coatings and smart materials. He (co)authored about 40 articles in peer reviewed journals. Pablo Druetta works as lecturer at the University of Groningen (RUG) and as engineering consultant. He received his Ph.D. from RUG in 2018 and has been teaching at a graduate level for 15 years. His research focus lies on computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Book Evaluation of Ionic Liquids Performance in Improving Medium Oil Recovery Factor

Download or read book Evaluation of Ionic Liquids Performance in Improving Medium Oil Recovery Factor written by Ali Mahmud Alarbah and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Saskatchewan, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniques were applied in many light and medium oil reservoirs in order to improve oil recovery. One of the most efficient EOR methods is chemical flooding. This research studied the efficiency of introducing various types of Ionic Liquids (ILs), 1-Ethyl-3-Methyl-Imidazolium Acetate ([EMIM][Ac]), 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([EMIM][Cl]), 1-Benzyl-3- methylimidazolium chloride ([BenzMIM][Cl]), and Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride ([THTDPh][Cl]), on the recovery factor (RF) of medium oil, (Weyburn oil, 30.25 oAPI),at room conditions. The main focus of this research was to investigate the effects of IL concentration, Slug Size (SS), and IL + brine slug initiation time on the (RF). The runs carried out demonstrated that oil recovery cannot economically increase beyond using the optimum concentration of IL in the mixture of displacing fluid and that the most efficient injection time of the chemical slug was at the beginning of the flooding procedure (as secondary flooding mode). In addition, the effect of ILs concentrations on the Surface Tension (SFT), pH, wettability alteration, and viscosity of the displacing phases were also investigated. Finally, it was shown that the potential of injecting a slug of IL + brine is much better than that of introducing a slug of alkali + brine. Moreover, the combination of IL and alkali (AIL) resulted in better RF than injecting either of them alone. On the other hand, introducing a slug of polymer + brine was more efficient than the others in terms of developing the recovery factor, but the combination of an IL slug and polymer slug resulted in a better RF , 91.68%OOIP, than injecting either of them alone.

Book Performance Evaluation of Ionic Liquids in Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Numerical Simulation

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Ionic Liquids in Enhanced Oil Recovery Using Numerical Simulation written by Mostafa Elaghoury and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the rise in oil productivity from conventional and unconventional resources in Canada and North America, using enhanced oil recovery technique, the need to understand and characterize these techniques, for the purpose of recovery optimization, has taken a prominent role in resource management. Chemical flooding has proved to be one of the most efficient EOR techniques. This study investigated the potential of employing Ionic Liquids (ILs) as alternative chemical agents for improving oil recovery. There is very little attention paid to employing this technique as well as few experimental and simulation studies. Consequently, very limited data is available. Since pilot and field studies are relatively expensive and time consuming, a numerical simulation study using CMG-STARS simulator was utilized to explore the efficiency of employing 1-Ethyl-3-Methyl-Imidazolium Acetate ([EMIM][Ac]) and 1-Benzyl-3- methlimidazolium chloride ([BenzMIM][Cl]) with respect to improving medium oil recovery. Eight different lab-scale core flooding experiments were selected with the objective to develop a numerical model to obtain the history matching of the experimental flooding results. To fulfill this objective; mainly, two-phase relative permeability curves were tuned. In this dissertation, the simulation results are presented in the form of oil recovery factor (RF), well bottom-hole pressure, oil cut, water cut and two-phase relative permeability curves. A sensitivity analysis was performed for the chemical injection rate, the chemical concentration, the slug size, and the initiation time while studying the effects of changing the oil viscosity, the polymer viscosity, and the reservoir temperature on oil recovery. In addition, the effect of changing the chemical adsorption and combining IL with low salinity water were considered. The results have shown a noticeable increase in the oil RF when injecting IL compared to conventional waterflooding. Furthermore, combining IL with alkaline and polymer led to higher oil recovery than injecting IL alone. Finally, the numerical model was upscaled to qualitatively examine the sustainability and efficiency of this technique in a field scale. The results emphasize the potential of applying IL flooding in a field scale. The increase in oil recovery is also consistent with the lab-scale model.
