Book excerpt: Void and dislocation structures in an Fe-25Ni-15Cr alloy were studied following irradiation with 2.8 MeV58Ni+ ions at temperatures between 600 and 750°C (1112 and 1382°F) to maximum damage levels up to 80 displacements per atom (dpa). Void formation was observed at all the temperatures investigated, with the maximum swelling between 650 and 700 °C (1202 and 1292°F). The swelling versus dose relationships exhibited an incubation dose followed by swelling at a rate that increased with increasing damage level. These data were consistent with previous swelling results for austenitic alloys irradiated with charged particles, which indicate that the swelling should become linear with irradiation dose at higher damage levels. Tangled dislocation networks were observed to form at low doses and to be fairly stable up to the highest damage levels examined. With the assumption of the observed stable dislocation networks, the dose dependence of swelling could be explained by a general form of the chemical rate theory for swelling due to void growth.

Book excerpt: A 2 1/4 Cr 1% Mo steel, heat treated to consist of upper and lower bainite and ferrite, has been shown to undergo substantial microstructural modification when irradiated with 14-MeV nickel ions at 500°C to 350 dpa at the peak damage depth. The original cementite (Fe3C) in upper and lower bainite was replaced by Chi phase, M7C3 and M2C in upper bainite, and Chi and M7C3 in lower bainite. The originally precipitate-free ferrite contained a significant fraction of G phase after irradiation. The replacement of Fe3C by M7C3 and M2C is consistent with the fact that M7C3 and M2C form in a quenched and tempered 2 1/4 Cr 1 Mo steel, but at higher tempering temperatures than does Fe3C. On the other hand, Chi and G phases have not been reported to occur in this steel as a result of thermal treatments. The steel is resistant to void swelling, which amounted to 0.2% or less even at the rather high dpa levels employed in this study. The quantitative data for precipitate and void number densities and sizes agree quite well with a companion neutron irradiation study of the same steel possessing an identical microstructure.

Book excerpt: Hardness measurements and microstructure examinations of Fe(-C)-Cu-Ni model alloys were performed following 1 MeV proton irradiation below 80°C. Microstructural examinations by transmission electron microscope (TEM) were carried out by means of a cross section method. A band of damage structures, parallel to the irradiated surface, was observed at a depth of 6.5 ? m in agreement with calculation based on the TRIM code. TEM observation revealed that the band consisted of high density of small black spots, which were considered to be interstitial-type dislocation loops. The amount of irradiation hardening increased with increase in copper concentration. An addition of 0.6wt%Ni to Fe-Cu alloys further increased the hardening, although the effect was reduced with increasing copper concentration. Irradiation hardening of pure iron was also significantly increased by the addition of nickel. The size and number density of the spot-like structures in Fe-Cu alloys decreased and increased, respectively, with addition of nickel. Three recovery stages were found in Fe-Cu-Ni alloys during post-irradiation isochronal annealing to 675°C: the stages are at around 150°C, 400°C and 600°C. The first stage was only observed in nickel-containing alloys, while the third stage was only observed in copper-containing alloys. After annealing to 375°C, the density of spot-like structures decreased in Fe-Cu-Ni alloy but increased in Fe-Cu alloy, while for both the size of spots increased.
