Book Effect of Floodwaters on Oysters in Mississippi Sound in 1950

Download or read book Effect of Floodwaters on Oysters in Mississippi Sound in 1950 written by Philip A. Butler and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Productive oyster reefs in Mississippi Sound are subject to seasonal floodwaters. In 1945, lowered salinity caused mass mortality on the reefs. The mortality at that time was attributed to fresh water discharged from the Bonnet Carre spillway on the Mississippi River. This report discusses the biological and hydrographic data collected during the flood period in 1950. Comparison of 1950 with previous years indicates that salinity levels in Mississippi Sound result from a combination of factors, no one of which can reasonably be cited as the cause of the oyster mortalities.

Book Shore Ecology of the Gulf of Mexico

Download or read book Shore Ecology of the Gulf of Mexico written by Joseph C. Britton and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the casual visitor, the Gulf of Mexico shores offer mainly sun, sand, and sea. Even the standard field guides, focused on one group of animals or plants, barely hint at the wealth and diversity of habitats and species along Gulf shores. Shore Ecology of the Gulf of Mexico, using a “whole habitat” approach, breaks new ground in describing all the conspicuous vascular plants, algae, birds, mammals, mollusks, crustaceans, and other invertebrates for each marine habitat. The area covered begins west of the Mississippi delta in Louisiana and follows the shores west and south to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Transitions between habitats also receive detailed treatment. The authors discuss changes in flora and fauna that result from differences in climate, shore geology, and patterns of precipitation in the succeeding habitats along the Gulf rim. They include discussion of more than 1,000 species of plants and animals, both on shore and in the near-shore subtidal zone, to give a virtually complete picture of western Gulf coast ecosystems. Excellent line drawings and photographs of over 800 species complement the text. For marine scientists, students, and knowledgeable beachcombers, this is a thorough source on Gulf coast marine life.

Book The American Sea

  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2015-05-13
  • ISBN : 1623493013
  • Pages : 586 pages

Download or read book The American Sea written by Rezneat Milton Darnell and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, Rezneat Darnell worked on this major synthesis of what is known about the Gulf of Mexico. His goal: to bring a deeper understanding of “the American Sea” to students, scientists, managers, and educated citizens of the public at large. The American Sea builds on Darnell’s own research, the research of his graduate students, government agency research reports, data synthesis reports, and literature summaries to present a holistic view of the Gulf of Mexico. Although he is recognized as a pioneer in the study of continental shelf ecology, Darnell largely resisted specialization, remaining throughout his career “the writer and bringer together of things.” Here, he has written a book that embraces history, geology, geography, meteorology, chemistry, biology, ecology, and human relations in one comprehensive reference. Although it is thorough and meticulous in coverage, what comes through in these pages is the enormity, complexity, and mystery of the world that lies just beyond the Texas vacation beach, the Louisiana wetland, or the Mexico fishing village. In addition to photographs of deep water and other organisms that are included in the book, a number of illustrations have been added to provide excellent visual material, including historical and ocean floor maps and many works of original art depicting marine species, sea turtles, fish, and crustaceans.
