Book excerpt: Soil and Fertilizers: Managing the Environmental Footprint presents strategies to improve soil health by reducing the rate of fertilizer input while maintaining high agronomic yields. It is estimated that fertilizer use supported nearly half of global births in 2008. In a context of potential food insecurity exacerbated by population growth and climate change, the importance of fertilizers in sustaining the agronomic production is clear. However, excessive use of chemical fertilizers poses serious risks both to the environment and to human health. Highlighting a tenfold increase in global fertilizer consumption between 2002 and 2016, the book explains the effects on the quality of soil, water, air and biota from overuse of chemical fertilizers. Written by an interdisciplinary author team, this book presents methods for enhancing the efficiency of fertilizer use and outlines agricultural practices that can reduce the environmental footprint. Features: Includes a thorough literature review on the agronomic and environmental impact of fertilizer, from degradation of ecosystems to the eutrophication of drinking water Devotes specific chapters to enhancing the use efficiency and effectiveness of the fertilizers through improved formulations, time and mode of application, and the use of precision farming technology Reveals geographic variation in fertilizer consumption volume by presenting case studies for specific countries and regions, including India and Africa Discusses the pros and cons of organic vs. chemical fertilizers, innovative technologies including nuclear energy, and the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals Part of the Advances in Soil Sciences series, this solutions-focused volume will appeal to soil scientists, environmental scientists and agricultural engineers.

Download or read book Agricultural Nitrogen Use and Its Environmental Implications written by Y. P. Abrol and published by I. K. International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2007 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen fertilizers are the inescapable necessity to enhance agricultural production and to sustain food security. However, their inefficient use accrues from inherent limitations of the crop plants as well as the manner in which N fertilizers are formulated, applied and managed. Excessive accumulation of N in the environment leads to soil acidification, pollution of groundwater and eutrophication of surface water, posing a public health problem as well as ecosystem imbalance. Moreover, the ozone layer depletion and greenhouse effects of NOx gases have global implications. Agricultural Nitrogen Use: Environmental Implications provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary description of problems related to the efficient use of nitrogen in agriculture, in the overall context of the nitrogen cycle, its environmental and human health implications, as well as various approaches to improve N use efficiency. The book is presented in six sections: N Use, Flows and Cycling in Agricultural Systems; N Use Efficiency in Crop Ecosystems; Management Options and Strategies for Enhancing N Use Efficiency; Plant Physiological and Molecular Aspects of Enhancing N Use Efficiency; Role of Legumes and Biofertilizers in Agricultural N Economy; and Environmental and Human Health Implications.

This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated nutrient management involving different organic sources like FYM, vermi-compost, crop residue, green manure, Bio-fertilizer and in-situ role of legumes along with balanced nutrient use (major and micro-nutrients) deserves due attention. In fact, based on series of experiments and studies conducted all over the country with reference to nutrient management for various crop as applicable to varying soil environment representing different agro-climatic zones have been generated at national level but the system based information’s on integrated nutrient management is still lacking and yet to be documented. In this publication 1, 3 and 4 deals with general issues and management options for integrated nutrient management with special reference to irrigated eco-system, while 2 focused on crop residue management. The 5 and 10 are enlightens the soil-test based nutrient management for sustainable soil health, while s 6 and 7 are related to nutrient economy through integrated farming system and inclusion of legumes under cereal based cropping systems. The 8 is focused on integrated nutrient management in rice-wheat cropping system, while 9 on oilseed based, 11 on soybean based, 13 on vegetable and 23 on seed spices based cropping systems. The issues related to SSNM, protected agriculture, soil chemical, biological and microbial diversity are discussed in 12, 14 and 18, respectively. The aspects related to system based nutrient budgeting, soil carbon management and sequestration, balanced crop nutrition in relation to crop diseases, economics and nutrient modeling have been duly discussed in s from 19 to 25.

Book excerpt: "This book contains a compilation of offered papers presented at the main congress of the XX International Grassland Congress held in University College Dublin, Ireland from 26 June to 1 July, 2005. It is complemented by six other books arising from the XX IGC as listed on the back cover: the book of invited papers from the main congress and five books containing the proceedings of five satellite workshops held immediately after the main congress at locations in the UK and Ireland (Aberystwyth, Belfast, Cork, Glasgow and Oxford). The workshops were designed to facilitate more in-depth presentations and discussions on more specialised topics of worldwide significance. The main congress brought together scientists from many disciplines, policy makers, consultants and producers involved directly in grass production and utilisation, as well as people in associated industries. They discussed issues around the theme of the congress, Grasslands : a Global Resource. The congress programme was organised around three main thematic areas: Efficient Production from Grassland Grassland and the Environment Delivering the Benefits from Grassland"
