Book excerpt: Research has shown that although many college students experience depression, most do not seek professional help from available mental health services. The current study uses the Theory of Planned Behavior (Azjen, 1988; 1991) as a model for changing attitudes toward seeking mental health help as well as increasing mental health counseling usage. The Theory of Planned Behavior posits that the best predictor of behavior is one's intention to do that behavior, which is in turn predicted by personal attitudes toward that behavior, what important others think of that behavior, and one's perceived self-efficacy to perform that behavior. For the current study, college students were asked to complete a short online questionnaire that included questions on attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services, depression, culture, and demographic information. After a week, participants were randomly assigned to either a control or experimental condition. Participants in the experimental condition watched a short film on going to the counseling center that was based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Participants in the control condition watched a short film on an unrelated topic. After the film, all participants completed a questionnaire regarding attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services and depression. After four weeks, participants were asked to complete a follow-up survey online about attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services and depression. Results from the current study do not support the use of the Theory of Planned Behavior as a model for predicting professional mental health service seeking. The intervention was found to be effective in changing attitudes, but was unsuccessful in changing behavior. Implications and suggestions for improving interventions that seek to increase professional mental health services utilization are provided in the discussion.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to create and test an intervention designed to increase students0́9 positive attitudes toward utilizing mental health services. A review of the literature was conducted to establish the guidelines for creating an intervention that would effectively influence attitudes while being relatively easy to customize and adapt to different settings. The content of the intervention was informed by the literature, reviewed by a panel of experts, and tested with a focus group of students before being finalized. In order to test the effectiveness of the intervention, and experimental study was designed which included an experimental and control group. The control group had the same experience as the experimental group except for the content of the intervention. The control group intervention provided general health information related to topics such as diet and exercise. Student underutilization of counseling services on college campuses is a well- recognized phenomenon. By improving student attitudes toward seeking counseling, it is hypothesized that more students who could benefit from such services would indeed seek them out. This is particularly important as the rates of suicide and serious mental illness on college campuses has increased over the years. Students who receive appropriate treatment for mental health concerns often experience significant improvement. Those students whose mental health is improved may perform better academically than those who remain untreated. Healthier students have the opportunity to be more productive and successful members of the campus community. The intervention was designed to be low cost so that it could be updated and tailored for different institutions. It was also created to be disseminated over the internet to reduce obstacles for students who may wish to view it. The intervention included music, narration, pictures, and animated text to capture the attention of the viewer. The production was accomplished using low-cost software that does not require expert skills to operate. The intervention showed significant effects on the first two subscales of the attitude measure (i.e., psychological openness and help-seeking propensity), but did not show statistical significance on the third (i.e., indifference to stigma) or on the intent to seek counseling measure (ISCI). Future studies could explore improvements to the current intervention and could examine the effects of the intervention over time (i.e., longitudinal design).

Book excerpt: This study assessed the perceptions and practices of mental health professionals at university counseling centers regarding their provision of guidance on the health effects of religious/ spiritual involvement. The membership of the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors was used to identify a national cross-section of university counseling centers. One licensed psychologist, professional counselor, or social worker from each counseling center was selected to survey (N = 623). A valid and reliable survey instrument was developed, and a three-wave postal mailing procedure was used to maximize the return rate. A total of 306 university counseling professionals (58%) responded. They agreed that religious/spiritual involvement has a positive influence on the health and well-being of college students (77%), but were unsure or disagreed (66%) that university counseling professionals should advise clients as such. Approximately one-third (31%) had never seriously thought about doing so. The respondents were predominantly (52%) "unsure" that guidance on the health effects of religious/spiritual involvement would result in lower health risks; however, nearly half (48%) indicated that such guidance would promote recovery among their clients. Although slightly more than half (54%) of the responding university counseling professionals discussed the salutary influence of religiosity/ spirituality with the majority of their clients (e.g., provides a means of coping with stress, offers social support, contributes to a sense of well-being), relatively few (21%) discussed the physical health effects of religious/spiritual involvement. The most frequently endorsed perceived barrier was that discussions of religiosity/spirituality and health "should occur only with clients who indicate that religion/spirituality is important to them" (67%). A plurality (35%) of the respondents had received no formal training in this area. Respondents who had received information/training from at least one source, as well as those who indicated higher levels of personal religiosity/spirituality, were significantly more likely to be in the action or maintenance stage and to report higher efficacy expectations and more positive outcome expectations regarding the provision of guidance on the health effects of religious/spiritual involvement. Implications and recommendations for clinical training, university counseling centers, and future research are discussed.

There is also research that supports the use of evaluation of centers for administrators to justify improving services. Although research supports the contribution of college counseling centers to retention, there is need for more assessment of overall counseling center services. This study explores student perceptions of a college counseling center's services and what influences those perceptions have. Many factors influence the decisions students make concerning whether to remain in school or leave. This study used an outcome survey given to students seen at a University of Alabama Counseling Center. It was given to every Counseling Center client who had been seen for at least 3 sessions. It was given during a 4-week period in the spring semester 2011. There was a significant relationship between satisfaction and importance of counseling center services. Students who thought services were important were also satisfied with services and vice versa. Males and females did not differ in their perception of the importance of the relationship with the counselor. Freshmen, sophomores, junior, seniors, and others did not differ in their perception of the importance of relationship with the counselor. Overall, students were satisfied with counseling services at The University of Alabama.

Book excerpt: This action research dissertation study was undertaken to establish the foundation of a comprehensive evaluation component for the Turn-It-Around (TIA) workshop intervention program at Arizona State University (ASU), and was delivered in the form of a program development consultation. The study's intent was to enhance the ASU Counseling Service's departmental capacity to evaluate one of its important clinical services. The outcomes of this study included multiple assessments of TIA's evaluability and the fidelity of its implementation to its program design. The study products include a well-articulated program theory comprised of program goals, learning objectives, a detailed description of program activities, a logic model, and theoretical construct checklist documents articulating the behavioral science theory underlying the TIA intervention. In addition, instruments tailored to the Turn-It-Around intervention that are suitable for assessing program outcomes were developed and are implementation ready. TIA's clinical stakeholders were interviewed following the generation and delivery of the products and instruments mentioned above to determine whether they found the study's processes and products to be worthwhile and useful. In general, the clinicians reported that they were very satisfied with the benefits and outcomes of the program development consultation. As an action research dissertation, this study generated useful and usable collateral materials in the form of reports, documents, and models. These products are now at the disposal of TIA's institutional stakeholders for use in day-to-day business activities such as training new facilitators and liaisons, and giving presentations that describe the usefulness of TIA as an intervention. Beyond the documents generated to form a program evaluation infrastructure for Turn-It-Around, the processes involved in crafting the documents served to engage relevant stakeholders in a cycle of action research that enriched and solidified their understandings of TIA and furnished them with insight into their counterparts' thinking about the intervention and its potential to benefit the college students they are responsible for helping. Consistent with the intent of action research, the processes involved in accomplishing the objectives of this study surfaced new topics and questions that will be useful in subsequent cycles of program improvement.

Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.
