Book Effect of Loading Rate and Thermal Aging on the Fracture Toughness of Stainless Steel Alloys

Download or read book Effect of Loading Rate and Thermal Aging on the Fracture Toughness of Stainless Steel Alloys written by WJ. Mills and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of loading rate on the fracture toughness of Types 304 and 316 stainless-steel plate and Type 308 weld before and after thermal aging was characterized using both fracture mechanics and Charpy specimens. Aging at 566°C for 10 000 h reduced static Jc initiation toughness values for both wrought and weld metals by 10 to 20%, and tearing moduli were reduced by 20 to 30%. Under semi-dynamic and dynamic loading conditions, the fracture resistance was not decreased below the static response for either unaged or aged materials. The present results also demonstrated that the large degradation in Charpy V-notch impact energy after aging was not representative of the impact resistance for stainless-steel components containing cracks or crack-life defects. Fractographic examinations revealed that the large loss in Charpy energy was associated with aging-induced microstructural changes that substantially decreased the energy required to initiate a crack from a blunt notch. At very slow strain rates, creep crack growth was found to cause a significant degradation in fracture toughness.

Book Effect of Aging on the Toughness of Human Cortical Bone

Download or read book Effect of Aging on the Toughness of Human Cortical Bone written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age-related deterioration of the fracture properties of bone, coupled with increased life expectancy, are responsible for increasing incidence of bone fracture in the elderly, and hence, an understanding of how its fracture properties degrade with age is essential. The present study describes ex vivo fracture experiments to quantitatively assess the effect of aging on the fracture toughness properties of human cortical bone in the longitudinal direction. Because cortical bone exhibits rising crack-growth resistance with crack extension, unlike most previous studies the toughness is evaluated in terms of resistance-curve (R-curve) behavior, measured for bone taken from wide range of age groups (34-99 years). Using this approach, both the ex vivo crack-initiation and crack-growth toughness are determined and are found to deteriorate with age; the initiation toughness decreases some 40% over six decades from 40 to 100 years, while the growth toughness is effectively eliminated over the same age range. The reduction in crack-growth toughness is considered to be associated primarily with a degradation in the degree of extrinsic toughening, in particular involving crack bridging in the wake of the crack.

Book Effect of Long term Thermal Aging on the Fracture Toughness of Austenitic Stainless Steel Base and Weld Metals

Download or read book Effect of Long term Thermal Aging on the Fracture Toughness of Austenitic Stainless Steel Base and Weld Metals written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compact tension specimens taken from FFTF primary piping materials (Type 316 stainless steel (SS) and 16-8-2 SS weld metal) and from reactor vessel materials (304 SS and 308 SS weld metal) were heated in laboratory furnaces from 100,000 hours. Fracture toughness testing was performed on these specimens, which are 7.62- and 25.4-mm thick, respectively at the aging temperature (482 and 427 degrees). Results were analyzed with the multiple-specimen method. Thermal aging continues to reduce the fracture toughness of FFTF component materials. Results show that thermal aging has a strong effect on the toughness degradation of weld metals, particularly for 16-8-2 SS weld whose aged/unaged Jc ratio is only 0.31 after 100,000-hour aging. The fracture toughness of the 308 and 16-8-2 SS weld metals fluctuated during 20,000 to 50,000-hour aging but deteriorated as the aging time increased to 100,000 hours; the toughness degradation is significant. Fracture control based on a fracture mechanics approach should be considered.

Book Effects of Thermal Aging on Fracture Toughness and Charpy impact Strength of Stainless Steel Pipe Welds

Download or read book Effects of Thermal Aging on Fracture Toughness and Charpy impact Strength of Stainless Steel Pipe Welds written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The degradation of fracture toughness, tensile, and Charpy-impact properties of Type 308 stainless steel (SS) pipe welds due to thermal aging has been characterized at room temperature and 290 C. Thermal aging of SS welds results in moderate decreases in Charpy-impact strength and fracture toughness. For the various welds in this study, upper-shelf energy decreased by 50-80 J/cm2. The decrease in fracture toughness J-R curve or JIC is relatively small. Thermal aging had little or no effect on the tensile strength of the welds. Fracture properties of SS welds are controlled by the distribution and morphology of second-phase particles. Failure occurs by the formation and growth of microvoids near hard inclusions; such processes are relatively insensitive to thermal aging. The ferrite phase has little or no effect on the fracture properties of the welds. Differences in fracture resistance of the welds arise from differences in the density and size of inclusions. Mechanical-property data from the present study are consistent with results from other investigations. The existing data have been used to establish minimum expected fracture properties for SS welds.

Book The Influence of Quenching and Aging on Fracture Toughness of the Al Zn Mg Cu Alloy 7449

Download or read book The Influence of Quenching and Aging on Fracture Toughness of the Al Zn Mg Cu Alloy 7449 written by J. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation characterises the fracture toughness of the very high strength Aluminium alloy 7449. This Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy is heat treatable and relies on rapid quenching from the solution heat treatment temperature to promote subsequent artificial aging. While the influence of quench paths on strength is well understood and can be predicted using techniques like quench factor analysis, the influence of quench rate on fracture toughness is more challenging. The rate of quenching can influence the fracture toughness through complex precipitation reactions occurring during cooling. The precipitate locations dictate the magnitude of the detrimental effect on the fracture toughness. In this investigation, the fracture toughness of 7449 in two product forms was measured using compact tension specimens cut from forged blocks and rolled plate. These plane strain (KIC) results were also augmented with Charpy impact tests. Various quench conditions were investigated, including water at three different temperatures and poly oxyethylene glycol (PAG) in two concentrations. The influence of standard and novel aging procedures including retrogression and reaging was also determined. The combinations of strength and toughness have been related to the prevailing microstructural condition. Fracture toughness magnitudes were found to vary most significantly with rapidity of cooling from the solution treatment temperature, with the subsequent aging treatments having a much smaller effect.
