Book excerpt: READ 180 is a comprehensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of elementary to middle school students whose reading achievement is below the proficient level. The program directly addresses individual needs through differentiated instruction, adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. Stage A provides tools for young struggling readers in elementary school to develop critical literacy skills. Stage B provides middle school struggling readers with topics designed for their level of reading that hold their interest. System 44 was designed for the most challenged, older struggling readers, and helps these students understand that the English language is a finite system of 44 sounds and 26 letters that can be mastered. It uses validated assessment for screening and placement, research-based phonics instruction and highly motivating and age-appropriate adaptive technology.

Book excerpt: The puropose of this study is to determine the value of allocating limited class time to the practice of indendent or silent reading. This study focuses specifically on the middle school English language arts classroom. The questions the researcher aims to answer include: Is it beneficial to decrease instructional time and increase independent reading time in the middle school language arts classroom? Does academic achievement in middle school English langugage arts improve as time spent on reading increases? ... Two language arts classes, each comprised of 20 regular education students, participated in the five week study. Findings indicate that when provided with independent reading time, students make signigicant strides in fluency and comprehension. Future research would be needed to determine what combination of direct instruction and independent reading time in the middle school language arts produces the highest academic growth.

Book excerpt: Students with low reading achievement experience difficulty accessing content area instruction. English learners from Hispanic homes traditional lag behind their English speaking counterparts. Previous research has identified various teaching methods that support reading achievement in English learners with particular emphasis on early grades. The current study adds to the existing literature by examining the effects of a small-group intervention cycle on middle school aged students. A small-group intervention was developed with components identified in the research literature on effective teaching methods for English learners. This cycle employed a gradual release of responsibility for instruction from the expert teacher to the students. Areas of reading acquisition receiving particular emphasis included phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students were assigned to treatment groups randomly from a stratified sample of English language proficiency and Lexile reading achievement scores. Analyses of variance and covariance were employed to evaluate the differences in reading outcomes for the two treatment groups. The results suggest that research-based small-group intervention can have positive effects on low performing middle school students and would be a useful strategy for intervention.

Book excerpt: Educators are challenged with implementing an effective discipline plan that will maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, while keeping students in class and engaged and improving their students’ performance. One program that educators have begun implementing to address these concerns is Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS); however, challenges, including time constraints and availability of resources, have impeded the success of implementation. In this study, the researcher compared TNReady student achievement scores, attendance rates, and office discipline referrals at a middle school with an established PBIS program and a non-PBIS middle school over a three-year period. The quantitative results of this study enabled the researcher to determine that there were statistically significant differences found during the years of the study in TNReady math achievement scores, attendance rates, and office discipline referrals for sixth grade students; however, no statistically significant differences were found for TNReady English language arts achievement scores.

Book excerpt: Today's teachers face more frequent and more severe challenges than perhaps any generation of teachers that have come before them. Administrators attempt to support teaching in an environment of ever-increasing accountability and dwindling financial resources with new and innovative strategies. One such strategy employed by modern educators has been the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) model for clear behavioral expectations and pyramids of intervention for targeted support for students. This study compared a middle school that employs PBIS with a middle school that does not, to determine if there was any statistical improvement realized on academic achievement. Two diverse middle schools with high numbers of low socioeconomic status students were studied. Eighth grade reading Standards of Learning assessment results were examined to determine what, if any, impact PBIS programs had on student achievement. The eighth grade reading scores were examined from the 2010-2011 school year, since this was the first year of implementation. The study results found that there was no statistically significant difference in achievement between the overall populations of the control school and the experimental school. The study also found that there was no statistically significant difference between male and female achievement at the control and experimental schools. The study did find that there was a statistically significant difference between Caucasian students at the control school and experimental school, as well as between minority students at the control school and experimental school.

Book excerpt: Students consistently struggle to achieve adequate levels of proficiency on state and national reading assessments. A quasi-experimental design was used to examine the effects of Response to Intervention (RTI) on middle school students' skills in reading and academic achievement. Also, the study sought to examine how the implementation of RTI changed over time. The sample population consisted of approximately 285 students in Grades 6 through 8 and 39 staff from one middle school in middle Tennessee. Conclusions revealed that students receiving RTI did not improve significantly compared to below grade level readers that did not receive reading intervention; however, paired samples t-tests revealed intervention students in each grade level showed significant improvements in overall comprehension scores.

Emphasis has long been placed on reading, writing, and arithmetic; however, reading achievement remains insufficient. The passage of No Child Left Behind in 2001 required all students to be reading on grade level by 2014. With states and school districts striving to make adequate yearly progress, finding programs and practices that prove effective in improving student achievement has become a main priority for schools. In an effort to improve reading achievement, a reading program was implemented at Gauge Middle School and studied for its impact. The Mississippi Curriculum Test 2 (MCT2) and Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) tests were analyzed to determine the impact of the program. The voices of the students and the voices of the teachers were considered important in understanding the impact. The reasons for this research include (a) determining whether the implementation of READ 180 increased student reading achievement and (b) understanding the perceptions of the students and teachers in READ 180. A struggling reader is defined as a student who is experiencing difficulty learning to read. The literature on struggling readers indicated that a struggling reader will never read on grade level, but they can make increases in their reading level. The data obtained from this research supports the literature review. After the participating in READ 180, the MCT2 scores did not increase; however, the SRI scores did increase for all the students. Future research that replicates this study may be conducted with various grades and schools in Leese County School District to determine if the findings of the study can be duplicated. Also, research could address the age or grade at which to focus more intently on reading interventions. Students who are too low for READ 180 need an intervention or program. A high school reading intervention would benefit high school students and help reduce the dropout rate. Motivation and student behavior for middle and high school students requires more research
