Book Metals Metalloids and Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea Ecosystem

Download or read book Metals Metalloids and Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea Ecosystem written by P. Szefer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-01-30 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents in detail the state of knowledge of the distribution, bioavailability, biomagnification, discrimination, fate and sources of chemical pollutants (metals, metalloids, radionuclides and nutrients) in all compartments (atmosphere, water, deposits, biota) of the Baltic environment. Particular components of the Baltic ecosystem are considered as potential monitors of pollutants. Budgets of chemical elements and the ecological status of the Baltic Sea in the past, present and future are presented. Estimates of health risks to man in respect to some toxic metals and radionuclides in fish and seafood are briefly discussed. The content of the book makes possible the identification of gaps in our environmental knowledge of the Baltic Sea, with certain sections establishing possible priorities, key areas or strategies for future research.

Book Status and Conservation of Eelgrass Zostera Marina in Eastern Canada

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although eelgrass (Zostera marina) has been widely recognized as an important component of coastal ecosystems in Eastern Canada, the workshop held 17-18 December 2003, in Sackville, New Brunswick, was the first meeting of its kind to bring together people interested in the status and conservation of eelgrass in this region. The workshop had three main themes: mapping and monitoring changes in eelgrass distribution and abundance; the importance of eelgrass to coastal ecosystems; and causes of eelgrass declines"--Summary.

Book Oceanography and Marine Biology An Annual Review Volume 59

Download or read book Oceanography and Marine Biology An Annual Review Volume 59 written by S J Hawkins and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 1054 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review remains one of the most cited sources in marine science and oceanography. The ever-increasing interest in work in oceanography and marine biology and its relevance to global environmental issues, especially global climate change and its impacts, creates a demand for authoritative refereed reviews summarizing and synthesizing the results of recent research. If you are interested in submitting a review for consideration for publication in OMBAR, please email the Editor in Chief, Stephen Hawkins, at [email protected]. For nearly 60 years, OMBAR has been an essential reference for research workers and students in all fields of marine science. This volume considers such diverse topics as the Great Barrier Reef Expedition of 1928-29, Mediterranean marine caves, macromedusae in eastern boundary currents, marine biodiversity in Korea, and development of a geo-ecological carbonate reef system model to predict responses of reefs to climate change. Seven of the peer-reviewed contributions in Volume 59 are available to read Open Access on this webpage (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9). An international Editorial Board ensures global relevance and expert peer review, with editors from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Singapore and the United Kingdom. The series volumes find a place in the libraries of not only marine laboratories and oceanographic institutes, but also universities worldwide.

Book excerpt: As climate change, resource overexploitation, and pollution leave ever more visible marks, ocean ecosystems, economies, and people are all affected. With coasts on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic, Canada faces a formidable challenge in building resilient, sustainable oceans and supporting the communities that rely on them. Sea Change reports on the OceanCanada Partnership, a multidisciplinary project to take stock of what we know about Canada’s oceans, construct possible scenarios for coastal regions, and create a national dialogue and vision. Three themes emerge from this impressive synthesis of social, cultural, economic, and environmental research: ocean change, access to ocean resources, and ocean governance. Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and practitioners focus on finding solutions to rapid environmental and social transformation, outlining the implications for legislation and offering policy recommendations. Increasingly, civil society will have to advocate for oceans, and Sea Change will empower the voices of those who take up that task.

Book Canada Goose Studies in the Maritime Provinces 1950 1992

Download or read book Canada Goose Studies in the Maritime Provinces 1950 1992 written by Canada. Environment Canada. Atlantic Region and published by Sackville, N.B. : Environment Canada, Atlantic Region. This book was released on 1997 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation assembles papers representing 40 years of unpublished data on Canada geese in the Maritimes, papers mostly unknown outside the agencies that commissioned the surveys or studies. Assembled information is also interpreted in the context of flyway and nation and related to the wider Canada goose picture. Fifteen chapters present and discuss information from the individual goose staging and wintering areas in the Maritimes. These are followed by chapters on the few Canada geese that breed there, on the habitats and foods used by staging and wintering geese, on the longer movements of geese as shown by band recoveries and neck-collar sightings, and on the annual kill of Canada geese by hunters and subsistence users in eastern Canada. A final chapter then discusses the place of these goose stocks in the wider Atlantic flyway Canada goose populations.
