Book European Sustainable Carriage of Goods

Download or read book European Sustainable Carriage of Goods written by Ellen Eftestøl-Wilhelmsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work discusses the rapidly developing European transport policy on sustainable freight and the connected efforts initiated by the European Commission (EC) on greening transport by the means of contract law. Greening transport has been a central goal for the EU for decades. The main problem has been, and still is, that far too much carriage of goods within the EU is performed unimodally: by road carriage alone. This has caused severe problems particularly in central Europe, where both trade and environment is suffering from an ineffective transport industry with growing problems of congestion and pollution. A modal shift in transport from mainly road based to a form of transport in which more environmental friendly modes such as rail, inland waterways and sea born transport are integrated into one transport chain, is hence an objective of the EU. If successful, this model could then be extended to the international transport community. The key question raised in this book is whether the traditional role of contract law is changing to such an extent that the parties involved must take external interests into account. In the case of the EU’s efforts to enhance sustainable carriage of goods within its realm, the author explores whether governmental interference is necessary, or if we can trust that the parties will integrate environmental issues into their contracts because there is a demand for such clauses. The different proposals for an EU regime on multimodal contracts of carriage are discussed in this context. This book will be of great relevance to academics and practitioners with an interest in EU law, transport law, environmental law and maritime law in general.

Book Specialized Administrative Law of the European Union

Download or read book Specialized Administrative Law of the European Union written by Herwig C. H. Hofmann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the law governing the administrative implementation of European Union public policy. Much of this law is specific to individual policy sectors. The volume provides a study of such specialized admininstrative law for more than twenty sectors. This cross-sectoral approach allows for detailed comparisons of EU administration in diverse policy fields. It identifies situations where legal structures and approaches may be unnecessarily duplicated, thus indicating where a comprehensive, general system could be advantageous for both Union law and policy achievement. The comparative nature of the study also draws attention to policy fields which have proven to be testing grounds for approaches adopted subsequently in other areas. In addition, the work highlights the distinctive, highly networked, and strongly cooperative character of EU administration, as a reflection of, and a foundation for, the operative nature of the European Union as a whole.

Book Law and Governance in an Enlarged European Union

Download or read book Law and Governance in an Enlarged European Union written by George A. Bermann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-11-10 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's principal aim is to critically address the institutional and substantive legal issues resulting from European enlargement, chiefly those relating to the legal foundations on which the enlarged Union is being built. The accession of new Member States creates the potential for a stronger and more powerful Europe. Realising this potential, however, will depend on the ability of the EU to develop functional and effective governance structures, both at the European level and at the level of the individual Member States. While the acquis communautaire will ensure that formal laws in the new Member States will be aligned with those of existing members, the question remains as to how effective institutions will be in implementing changes, and what effects the imposed changes will have on the legitimacy of the new legal framework. This book, containing the work of leading scholars in law and social sciences, examines the current and future legal framework for EU governance, and the role that new members will - or will not - play in the creation of that framework, paying particular attention to the specific challenges membership in the EU poses to the acceding states of Central and Eastern Europe. It is a book which will contribute to and influence debates over constitutionalism and legal harmonisation in the EU.

Book Transport Policy

Download or read book Transport Policy written by Kerry Hamilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport in the European Community is undergoing a new revolution. The completion of the Channel Tunnel and a network of high-speed railways, the expansion of the road system, and the improvement of urban transport systems are all set to make a profound impact. The Community is actively involved in supporting improvements both in northern and southern Europe, in projects which represent a major investment of interest both to private-sector developers and to public administrators. This volume explains the involvement of the EC institutions in these matters, and how the Community's transport policy might develop in the future. Key EC policy documents are summarised, and full details of all the relevant official material is given. This comprehensive and up-to-date guide will be invaluable to all those concerned with the future of transport, either as consumers or as suppliers of systems and infrastructure.

Book Lobbying in the European Parliament

Download or read book Lobbying in the European Parliament written by Maja Kluger Dionigi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains when and how interest groups are influential in the European Parliament, which has become one of the most important lobbying venues in the EU. Yet we know little about the many ways in which interest groups and lobbyists influence parliamentary politics. The author offers insights on four key cases of lobbying, based on the analysis of EU documents, lobbying letters, and 150 interviews. She argues that lobbying success depends on a number of factors, most notably the degree of counter-lobbying, issue salience, and committee receptiveness. These factors are brought together in the framework of “Triple-I” - interests, issues, and institutions – to determine the success or failure of lobbying. This book will be of use to students and scholars interested in EU politics and governance, EU decision-making, and interest group politics, along with policy-makers and practitioners.

Book Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology

Download or read book Short Sea Shipping in the Age of Sustainable Development and Information Technology written by Tiago A. Santos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough understanding of Short Sea Shipping (SSS) and its role in transport chains, presenting a revision of EU policies for SSS. Infrastructure and equipment required for the success of SSS are discussed, including critical features of modern roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ships and terminals. Models are proposed for the evaluation of transportation demand in SSS, including the potential effects of external costs, and its results are used within the scope of methods for Ro-Ro ship and fleet sizing. A discussion of methods used to calculate such costs is provided, and a comparison of aggregated demand with and without internalisation of external costs is carried out, pointing towards solutions for ‘greening’ freight transportation. Applications of multi-criteria decision-making and simulation techniques to supply chains based on SSS are presented. The role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the promotion of SSS is also discussed. A number of case studies illustrate the different research methods and techniques. This book is a useful resource for students and researchers studying transportation, as well as policymakers and practitioners involved in this field and anyone with an interest in the promotion of environmentally sound transport solutions.
