I shall satisfy all who read what I have to say of you, that you are not only destitute of charity, but full of malice. It is no feeling of retaliation that urges me to address you this communication. I would not inflict personal injury upon you if you were in my power; but I owe it to my friends, especially in Massachusetts, to defend my character against your slanders, or rather to show them who my assailant is. Had you attacked me under your own name, as you did in the Senate, in June, 1862, I should have regarded it with indifference, as I did that attack.
