Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Parrish’s childhood obsession with series books like the Hardy Boys and Tom Swift inspired him to become an author. Just as his debut novel becomes a bestseller, his relationship with his girlfriend, Rebecca, begins to fall apart. Robert realizes he must confront his secret demons by fulfilling a youthful promise to solve a mystery surrounding his favorite series—the Tremendous Trio. Guided by twelve tattered books and an unidentified but tantalizing fragment of a story, Robert journeys into the history of the books that changed his life, hoping they can help him once again. His odyssey takes him to 1906 Manhattan, a time of steamboats, boot blacks, and Fifth Avenue mansions, but every discovery he makes only leads to more questions. Robert’s quest intertwines with the stories of three young people trying to define their places in the world at the dawn of a new and exciting century. Magda, Gene, and Tom not only write the children’s books that Robert will one day love, together they explore the vibrant city on their doorstep, from the Polo Grounds to Coney Island’s Dreamland, drawing the reader into the Gilded Age as their own friendships deepen. The connections between the authors, their creations, and Robert’s redemptive journey make for a beautifully crafted novel that is an ode to the children’s series books of our past, to New York City, and above all, to the power of love and friendship.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Born in 1862, this man was one of the most prolific children's writers in the United States, and he exploited the market to its fullest potential. After some publishing successes himself in the 1890s, he developed the Stratemeyer Syndicate - a type of production factory for series books. Stratemeyer would conceive ideas for series, draft an outline for each book, and hire writers to turn the outlines into full-length manuscripts, all published under pennames. The syndicate kept between 19 and 31 series in progress until Stratemeyer's death in 1930, when his daughters assumed control, publishing over 480 books. Not all the books were popular, but by experimenting with different types of series, using timely material, and reflecting prevailing social values, Edward Stratemeyer and the Syndicate offered readers vicarious wish fulfillment."--BOOK JACKET.

"None of your business, Roger Strong," replied the only son of the wealthiest merchant in Darbyville. "You are stealing her pears," I went on. "Your pockets are full of them." "See here, Roger Strong, just you mind your own business and leave me alone." "I am minding my business," I rejoined warmly. "Indeed!" And Duncan put as much of a sneer as was possible in the word. "Yes, indeed. Widow Canby pays me for taking care of her orchard, and that includes keeping an eye on these pear trees," and I approached the tree upon the lowest branch of which Duncan was standing.

Book The Three Wars of Lt Gen George E Stratemeyer

Download or read book The Three Wars of Lt Gen George E Stratemeyer written by George E. Stratemeyer and published by Department of the Air Force. This book was released on 1999 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, we examine the challenges and opportunities created by global migration at the start of the 21st century. Our focus extends beyond economic impact to questions of international law, human rights, and social and political incorporation. We examine immigrant outcomes and policy questions at the global, national, and local levels. Our primary purpose is to connect ethical, legal, and social science scholarship from a variety of disciplines in order to raise questions and generate new insights regarding patterns of migration and the design of useful policy. While the book incorporates studies of the evolution of immigration law globally and over the very long term, as well as considerations of the magnitude and determinants of immigrant flows at the global level, it places particular emphasis on the growth of immigration to the United States in the 1990s and early 2000s and provides new insights on the complex relationships between federal and state politics and regulation, popular misconceptions about the economic and social impacts of immigration, and the status of 'undocumented' immigrants.
