Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at one of America’s best-known and beloved artists at a pivotal but little-known moment in his life that profoundly shaped both his art and career. Edward Hopper & Cape Ann tells the largely ignored but significant origin story of Edward Hopper’s years in and around Gloucester, Massachusetts—a period and place that imbued Hopper’s paintings with a clarity and purpose that had eluded his earlier work. This volume focuses on summers Hopper spent there in the 1920s, starting in 1923, when he first embraced watercolor during outdoor painting excursions on Cape Ann and discovered one of his favorite subjects: houses and vernacular architecture. The success of Hopper’s Gloucester watercolors transformed his work in all media and set the stage for his monumental career. Accompanying a major retrospective at the Cape Ann Museum, including an unprecedented loan of twenty-eight works from the Whitney Museum of American Art, this highly readable and beautifully illustrated volume reveals in great depth the lesser-known story about the influence of a young painter, Josephine Nivison, who became not only Hopper’s wife but also the most trusted force underlying his artistic confidence. Here she is recast as principal producer of Hopper’s distinctive style and his “brand” visionary from the time of their courtship until his death in 1967.

Book excerpt: Edward Hopper's world-famous, instantly recognizable paintings articulate an idiosyncratic view of modern life, unfolding in a world of lonely lighthouses, gas stations, movie theaters, bars and hotel rooms. With his impressive subjects, independent pictorial vocabulary and virtuoso play of colors, Hopper's work continues to this day to color our memory and imaginary of the United States in the first half of the 20th century. Hopper began his career as an illustrator and became famous around the globe for his oil paintings. These paintings testify to the artist's great interest in the effects of color and his mastery in depicting light and shadow, at work whether the artist was painting alienated figures in dreamlike interiors or desolate American landscapes. Edward Hopper: A Fresh Look on Landscape is published to accompany a major exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler of Hopper's iconic images of the vast American landscape. The catalog gathers together paintings, watercolors and drawings made by the artist between the 1910s and the 1960s, and supplements them with essays by Erika Doss, David Lubin and Katharina Rüppell, focused on the subject of depicting the landscape.

Download or read book Hopper Drawings written by Edward Hopper and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Hopper holds an important place in twentieth-century American art. In his scenes of urban and rural life--canvases that reveal his rare, highly focused technical accomplishment and his deep psychological penetration--he created indelible images that often convey the loneliness of persons within their environment. Highly individual, instantly recognizable, his works are among the most esteemed in collections of American art. The Whitney Museum of American Art is the biggest repository of works by Edward Hopper. In its collection are a large number of Hopper drawings, powerful works that teach us not only about Hopper's technique and vision but also about the art of drawing itself. This book presents 44 major Hopper drawings, executed in crayon, charcoal, pencil, and other primarily monochromatic media, most of them reproduced directly from originals in the museum's collection. Some of these compelling works are studies for paintings. Many reveal familiar Hopper territory: Manhattan streets, a lighthouse on the Atlantic seacoast, the rural Northeast, and more. This inexpensive edition offers a wonderful opportunity for artists and art lovers to study the unique range and evocative power of Hopper's draftsmanship. Those mastering and refining their drawing skills will discover in these pages a rich source of inspiration and instruction. Dover (1989) original publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his works, Hopper poetically expressed the solitude of man confronted to the American way of life as it developed in the 1920s. Inspired by the movies and particularly by the various camera angles and attitudes of characters, his paintings expose the alienation of mass culture. Created using cold colours and inhabited by anonymous characters, Hopper’s paintings also symbolically reflect the Great Depression. Through a series of different reproductions (etchings, watercolours, and oil-on-canvas paintings), as well as thematic and artistic analysis, the author sheds new light on the enigmatic and tortured world of this outstanding figure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Hopper (1882-1967), long recognized as the premier 20th-century American realist painter, was famously introverted and reclusive. He rarely spoke about his personal life, and his close friends were few and love interests fewer. Until now, there have been only two known romantic pursuits prior to Hopper's marriage to Josephine Nivison in 1924: a brief relationship in Paris with an English girl in 1906-7 and another spanning several years with an older French woman beginning in New York in 1915. The discovery of fifty-eight previously unknown letters and one note from Alta Hilsdale (1884-1948) to Hopper brings to light a previously unknown romantic relationship. Hilsdale, who was from Minnesota and spent time in New York and Paris, sent letters to Hopper at various home and studio addresses during the course of ten years. Reverend Arthayer Sanborn, a close friend of Edward and Josephine Hopper, discovered the letters in Hopper's childhood home in Nyack, New York, after the artist's death. Fewer than ten people have had the opportunity to read these letters, and they are published in their entirety for the first time in My Dear Mr. Hopper. Published in association with the Whitney Museum of American Art

Book excerpt: This novel reminds readers of the creator of the "Man at the Wheel," sculptor Leonard Craske; stock market wizard Roger Babson; Lanesville's baseball-loving Fred Foster of Foster Brothers' Drug Store; Floyd the Clammer; Henry Gould, the one-legged lifeguard of Half Moon beach; heroic Howard Blackburn; Jacobson's seaside family sauna and, from way back, Gloucester's unlucky sea serpent eyewitness and chronicler, Lonson Nash. As Gloucester's Tricentennial celebration (1623-1923) unfolds, enter two artists, Ed Hopper and Jo Nivison. See Jo's cat run. After Ed finds and returns Jo's beloved Arthur, she gratefully loans him her watercolors. When Ed promptly captures a vision of Gloucester for all time, he also comes to see his fellow artiste through new eyes. The "odd couple" attend a silent movie at the North Shore Theater, party at Leon Kroll's on Rocky Neck, sketch at Good Harbor beach, explore Lane's Cove, and drink Twin Lights ginger ale, made in Rockport. By the time of the climactic Tricentennial pageant at Stage Fort Park, a question hovers over the lovers: what next? Sketching and painting in Cape Ann's legendary light by day, spooning under its starry skies when they aren't fighting, Ed and Jo waver between commitment and separation in a narrative presented in a novel here for the first time ever anywhere. Download or read book Grupp on Painting written by Emile A. Gruppé and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust jacket notes: "Vibrant, fresh, immediate! The direct oil painting technique is an intense reaction to nature, a race with time to capture the color, the light and shadow, the design and the spirit of a subject in a few short hours. And now, Emile Gruppe - master of the direct oil painting technique - shows how you can use the broad strokes and lively colors of this spontaneous approach to infuse your own paintings with vitality, vigor, and on-the-spot freshness. A firm believer in using the best materials for the best results, Gruppe begins with a quick review of his favorite brushes, colors, easels, and painting surfaces. Next, he covers the basics of good design, what to look for and how to orchestrate what you see: masses, lines, values, and relationships. Turning to color, a fundamental element of his painting technique, Gruppe discusses complements, color harmony, color vibration, local color, reflected color, and using color to create atmospheric perspective. He explains how color appears on various kinds of days - foggy, clear, cloudy - and under different lighting conditions - front lighting, backlighting, sidelighting. In subsequent chapters, the author focuses on composing seascapes and landscapes; he explains how to paint rocks, ocean, lighthouses, boats, piers, pilings, roads, trees, streams, snow, mountains, valleys. Then, in full-color step-by-step demonstrations, the author shows how he captures a subject in his unique, exuberant, on-the-spot style.

Book Edward Hopper and the American Hotel

Download or read book Edward Hopper and the American Hotel written by Leo G. Mazow and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using recreated itineraries, travel along with Edward Hopper on his various road trips and encounter hotels, staff, and guests as seen through the artist's eyes The painter, draftsman, and illustrator Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is one of America's best-known and most frequently exhibited artists. Hotels, motels, and tourist homes are recurring motifs in his work, along with streets, lighthouses, and gas stations forming a visual vocabulary of transportation infrastructure. In ten essays, this fascinating volume explores Hopper's lifelong investigation of such spaces, shedding light on both his professional practice and far-reaching changes in transportation and communications, which affected not only work and leisure but also dynamics of race, class, and gender. Hopper's covers for the trade journal Hotel Management, in addition to other well-known works, invite reflection on the complicated roles of the nascent New Woman; the erasure of hotel work and workers; contemporary associations of the color white with cleanliness and purity; the watercolors Hopper made from hotel windows and rooftops in Mexico; and the broader context of transportation history. A final chapter then situates Hopper's contribution to the fascinating role that the hotel has played in the broader development of American art in the 20th century. As a unique feature, the book's backflap also holds two "TripTik"-like, removable maps that trace the journeys that Hopper and his wife, the artist Josephine "Jo" Nivison Hopper, took by car in the 1940s and 1950s; selected correspondence and quotations from Jo's own diaries join reproductions of postcards and ephemera illuminating their--and fellow Americans'--shifting travel habits.
