Book excerpt: This book covers the history of multiple families whose only overarching connection is that they were all the ancestors of Robert Hilton Squires II, my brother-in-law. But these various genealogical strands intersected with many pivotal eras in English colonial and later American history. Thus in some strange way the history of this one contemporary person is a microcosm of the story of America.

Book War on the Middleline The Founding of a Community In the Kayaderosseras Patent In the Midst of the American Revolution

Download or read book War on the Middleline The Founding of a Community In the Kayaderosseras Patent In the Midst of the American Revolution written by James E. Richmond and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1768 the sixty-year struggle to open the lands of the Kayaderosseras Patent north of Albany for settlement was finally resolved. The long conflict with France was over, and disputes over ownership rights with the local Mohawk Indians had been settled. This is the story of the families that left their homesteads in Connecticut and moved to Middleline Road in Ball's Town, in the Patent. There they began their new life on the frontier, soon to be interrupted by the American Revolution. As Yankees, most of these pioneers supported the rebel cause. In 1780 the war came to them, as a contingent of 200 British soldiers, Loyalists, and Mohawk Indians descended on Ball's Town, pillaging and burning their newly-built cabins. In the wake of the raid twenty-five men were carried off to Canada, where many remained imprisoned until the end of the War two years later. "War on the Middleline" is the story of these families, their heritage, and the hardships they endured during the founding of our nation.

Book Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks

Download or read book Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks written by Jane A. Barlow and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks is the lively and well documented story of the growth of the lake side community made famous by the incident that inspired Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy. The rich history of the lake unfolds with stories of its early residents, hunters, and guides—Jim Higby, Billy Dutton, Henry Covey, and Bill Dartin—the late 1870s, of the lake's ownership by William Seward Webb, of the construction of the first private camp—Club Camp—in 1878, and the coming of hotels and resorts beginning in 1880 with the construction of Camp Crag. From a time when a telephone number was a simple "8F6" and the "pickle boat" brought supplies to camp, to more recent stories of exuberant waterskiing and motorboat regattas, the book includes a detailed history and descriptions of the camps and resorts on the lake, persons and celebrities who made the lake their year-round or seasonal home—including actress Minnie Maddern Fiske and artist David Milne—natural disasters and political events, recreation, and the work of the Big Moose Property Owners Association. This is the story of Big Moose Lake brought to life by more than 275 family photographs, antique postcards, and previously unpublished memoirs, oral histories, diary entries, and the personal correspondence of the men and women who settled the area and of those who call it home.
