Book Edward Fifth Earl of Darnley and Emma Parnell His Wife

Download or read book Edward Fifth Earl of Darnley and Emma Parnell His Wife written by Edward Bligh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward, Fifth Earl of Darnley and Emma Parnell, His Wife: The Story of a Short and Happy Married Life Told in Their Own Letters and Other Family Papers A few years ago there came into my possession a bundle of letters and papers relating to the youth and short married life of my mother, Emma, Countess of Darnley, and incidentally of my father, Edward Bligh, Fifth Earl of Darnley. My mother, who was of the most retiring disposi tion, was in the habit of destroying all such papers, and the fact that these should have been preserved seems to prove that she was not unwill ing that others should benefit by this record of her husband's singularly loveable and unselfish character. My daughter, the Hon. Mrs. Arthur Pelham, has assisted me in selecting and arranging these letters, and we have formed the opinion that this simple record of a married life in which loyal affection and fervent religious devotion played so large a part, might be received with sympathetic appreciation by a wider circle of readers than ourselves. The story has been completed by letters and journals preserved by my uncle, Sir John Duncan Bligh, British Minister at Stockholm and Hanover. A few notes have been added to explain the allusions to social and political events of the period. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Keeping the Victorian House

Download or read book Keeping the Victorian House written by Vanessa D. Dickerson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1995. The essays in this volume demonstrate how Victorian women took up various positions along a continuum that ranged from the desire of Shelley’s creature for the power and acceptance it associated with the house to the rejection of Brontë’s heroine of the immobility and powerlessness she ultimately experienced there. More specifically the essays in this volume explore the nature of the Victorian woman’s domestic relations by centring in one activity that most informed her place in what was often the father’s house: housekeeping. The essays in this edition determine how writers, especially novelists, both male and female, used housekeeping to construct, reconstruct, represent, and inscribe the female self and condition. This title will be of interest to students of history and literature.

Download or read book The Whig World written by Leslie Mitchell and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-07-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Whigs were one of the two great English political parties in the 150 years after 1700, vastly influential whether in office or in opposition. Yet the Whigs were much more than simply a group of politicians. An exclusive set, composed of the greatest and wealthiest families, the Whig world was a self-contained and small one, impervious to outside criticism. With members such as Charles James Fox, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire and Lord Byron, its gambling, loose-living, drinking and wit was notorious. The Whig World is a portrait, of which politics forms only a small part, of an extraordinary group of men and women whose power, taste and intellect dominated the centre of what had become the greatest power in the world. Cosmopolitan, sceptical, urban, sophisticated, and promiscuous, the Whigs numbered many more brilliant conversationalists and controversialists amongst their number than the Bloomsbury Group.
