Book excerpt: ‘To Whom This May Come’ (1889) is a classic short story by the American author, Edward Bellamy, most famous for his socialist and utopian novel ‘Looking Backward: 2000-1887’ (1888). First published in ‘Harper's New Monthly Magazine’, it tells the tale of an unnamed narrator who is the sole survivor of a shipwreck. Washed ashore on a remote island, he is horrified to discover that its inhabitants have the ability to read minds, but to his surprise, this unique ability has consequences he never expected. This adventurous tale will excite those who are already familiar with Bellamy ́s other short stories, as well as new readers who are looking for an interesting read. Edward Bellamy (1850 - 1898) was an American author, journalist and political activist. His novel ‘Looking Backward: 2000-1887’ (1888) was one of the most successful books published in the United States in the 19th century and influenced a generation of intellectuals. Referenced in many Marxist publications of the time, the book inspired the formation of Nationalist Clubs dedicated to spreading his political ideas. Bellamy’s other works include the novels ‘Six to One’ (1878), ‘Dr. Heidenhoff's Process’ (1880), ‘Miss Ludington's Sister’ (1885), ‘Equality’ (1897) and ‘The Duke of Stockbridge; a Romance of Shays' Rebellion (1900)’, as well as several short stories, such as ‘The Blindman's World’, ‘To Whom This May Come’, and ‘With the Eyes Shut’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'No person can be blamed for refusing to read another word of what promises to be a mere imposition upon his credulity.' Julian West, a feckless aristocrat living in fin-de-siècle Boston, plunges into a deep hypnotic sleep in 1887 and wakes up in the year 2000. America has been turned into a rigorously centralized democratic society in which everything is controlled by a humane and efficient state. In little more than a hundred years the horrors of nineteenth-century capitalism have been all but forgotten. The squalid slums of Boston have been replaced by broad streets, and technological inventions have transformed people's everyday lives. Exiled from the past, West excitedly settles into the ideal society of the future, while still fearing that he has dreamt up his experiences as a time traveller. Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward (1888) is a thunderous indictment of industrial capitalism and a resplendent vision of life in a socialist utopia. Matthew Beaumont's lively edition explores the political and psychological peculiarities of this celebrated utopian fiction. Book excerpt: When the author mentioned the former idea, Hammond demanded why this tendency was not reciprocal between the sexes. As a matter of fact, while women showed endless devotion and fondness for men, their feeling was without the strain of adoration. Particular men's qualities of mind or heart might excite the enthusiastic admiration of women, but such admiration was for cause, and in no way confounded with the worshipful reverence which it was man's instinct to extend to woman as woman, with secondary reference to her qualities as a particular person. No fact in the relations of men and women, he declared, was more striking than this contrast in their mutual attitudes. It was the feminine, not the masculine, ideal which supplied the inspiration of art and the aroma of literature, which was found enshrined in the customs and common speech of mankind. To this the author replied that man, being the dominant sex, had imposed his worship on the race as a conquering nation, its gods on the conquered. He, not a woman, had been the creator of the art, the literature, and the language which were dedicated to her. Had woman been the dominant sex, the reverse might have happened, and man been obliged to stand upon a pedestal and be worshiped.

Book The Responsibility to Protect

Download or read book The Responsibility to Protect written by Alex J. Bellamy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, the international community made a landmark commitment to prevent mass atrocities by unanimously adopting the UN’s “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) principle. As often as not, however, R2P has failed to translate into decisive action. Why does this gap persist between the world’s normative pledges to R2P and its ability to make it a daily lived reality? In this new book, leading global authorities on humanitarian protection Alex Bellamy and Edward Luck offer a probing and in-depth response to this fundamental question, calling for a more comprehensive approach to the practice of R2P – one that moves beyond states and the UN to include the full range of actors that play a role in protecting vulnerable populations. Drawing on cases from the Middle East to sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, they examine the forces and conditions that produce atrocity crimes and the challenge of responding to them quickly and effectively. Ultimately, they advocate both for emergency policies to temporarily stop carnage and for policies leading to sustainable change within societies and governments. Only by introducing these additional elements to the R2P toolkit will the failures associated with humanitarian crises like Syria and Libya become a thing of the past.

This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, was the origin of the Nazi salute and Nazi behavior. This book reveals why public schools will not teach students about his life. Astounding discoveries (from the historian Dr. Rex Curry) are explained in this biography of Bellamy. Learn the tragic impact of Bellamy's dogma of "Christian Socialism" and "Military Socialism" all over the world. Find out why, if the truth were taught about Bellamy, then all students would refuse to perform the 12-year daily ritual of chanting that Bellamy promoted. Author Ian Tinny with the Pointer Institute shows the connections to Socialism, Fascism, Nazism, and more. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, this biography of Francis Bellamy is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of anarcho-capitalism. Tinny writes with an enthusiasm rarely encountered in the leaden prose of academic history, and his text is studded with telling quotations from history's forgotten luminaries. There are vivid descriptions of events that are usually ignored (e.g. the Pledge of Allegiance as the origin of the Nazi salute and Nazi behavior). Ian Tinny's work on Francis Bellamy (author of the Pledge of Allegiance), exposing the dogma of "military socialism," should be read by every student. Instead, it is banned in government schools (socialist schools).
