Book excerpt: This book covers many topics that are important to M. Holmes because these are the topics that influence the daily lives of the youth in our communities. The book is not in any particular order, but M. Holmes believes that everyone who reads this book will find something of interest that they will be passionate about. M. Holmes hopes that it will gain the interest of many individuals. The purpose of Deviance is to encourage people to take a stand and to do something to make this world a better place. M. Holmes suggests that we start in our communities. M. Holmes points out that once realized that the community is where crime is manifested, society can then begin to rebuild and heal. Three years ago, I decided to return to college to get a bachelor degree in criminal justice. I decided to take criminal justice because I was frustrated with the number of youths going to prison. The only way I knew to combat the problem was to learn about our criminal justice system and to create theories and solutions to stop the crimes and, most importantly, to stop the revolving doors to our prisons. At times, I became so angry and frustrated because of the crimes in our society. There are reasons for these crimes, and I believe that we are not doing enough to halt them. I have determined that the reasons for the crimes in our society are not unfounded. We need to take our heads out of the sand and address the issues. I believe that the issues are basically economics. Our society runs on economics. Just what is economics? The Oxford Dictionary defines economics as “the science concerned with the production and consumption or use of goods and services.” In order to live a healthy and prosperous life, we must be economically fit. In society today, we have many families and individuals who are economically deprived, resulting in crime.

Book Social Studies Education in East Asian Contexts

Download or read book Social Studies Education in East Asian Contexts written by Kerry J. Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the state of social studies education within selected East Asian societies and provides some insights into distinctive classroom practices. In an increasingly volatile and unpredictable world, the education of young people who both understand the contexts in which they are growing up and see the need for engaging with them is a top priority. This task falls to social studies education which carries the responsibility for inducting young people into their social world and helping them to see the role they can play within it. This is particularly important in East Asia where strong economic growth, long held cultural values and diverse political systems create an environment that challenges young people on multiple fronts. This book, with its team of regional authors, shows how different societies in the region are dealing with these challenges and what can be expected from future citizens. The book will appeal to policy makers, researchers and teachers interested in the current state of social studies education in East Asian societies.

Download or read book Unequal Profession written by Meera E Deo and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the experiences of women of color law school faculty and the effect of race and gender on legal education. This book is the first formal, empirical investigation into the law faculty experience using a distinctly intersectional lens, examining both the personal and professional lives of law faculty members. Comparing the professional and personal experiences of women of color professors with white women, white men, and men of color faculty from assistant professor through dean emeritus, Unequal Profession explores how the race and gender of individual legal academics affects not only their individual and collective experience, but also legal education as a whole. Drawing on quantitative and qualitative empirical data, Meera E. Deo reveals how race and gender intersect to create profound implications for women of color law faculty members, presenting unique challenges as well as opportunities to improve educational and professional outcomes in legal education. Deo shares the powerful stories of law faculty who find themselves confronting intersectional discrimination and implicit bias in the form of silencing, mansplaining, and the presumption of incompetence, to name a few. Through hiring, teaching, colleague interaction, and tenure and promotion, Deo brings the experiences of diverse faculty to life and proposes several mechanisms to increase diversity within legal academia and to improve the experience of all faculty members. Praise for Unequal Profession “Fascinating, shocking, and infuriating, Meera Deo’s careful qualitative research exposes the institutional practices and cultural norms that maintain a separate and unequal race-gender order even within the privileged ranks of tenure-track law professors. With riveting quotes from faculty across a range of institutional and social positions, Unequal Profession powerfully reminds us that we must do better. I saw my own career in this book—and you might, too.” —Angela P. Harris, University of California, Davis “A powerful account of inequality in legal academia. Quantitative data and compelling narratives bring to life the challenges and roadblocks in gaining not just entry and tenure but also respect for the voices of minority women within the academy. There are no easy remedies, but reading this book is a good place to start for lawyers and law professors to understand what minority women face and which practices can increase the odds of success.” —Bryant G. Garth, University of California, Irvine “Unequal Profession should be mandatory reading for everyone in legal academia . . . . By providing concrete evidence of systemic discrimination, Meera Deo illuminates a long-standing problem needing to be remedied.” —Sarah Deer, University of Kansas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative analysis considers the differing approaches to important areas of law in England, France and Germany. In particular, constitutions, sources of law, rights against the state to prevent abuse of power, and rights of private individuals and organisations against each other in tort and contract are examined and compared, and the system of courts is also considered. Updated and revised, each sub-topic is introduced with the relevant material in the English system, allowing easy comparison and assimilation of the other systems. The text includes translations of relevant French and German codal material, and references to relevant cases from all of the jurisdictions. It examines the consequences of the Lisbon Treaty, as well as other recent codal and legislative changes. Comprehensive and topical, the text explores a wide variety of new case law on issues such as: preventive detention; the use of evidence obtained by torture; the balance between suppression of terrorism and personal freedom; the internet; email monitoring; artificial reproductive techniques; use of global positioning systems (GPSs), deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and closed-circuit television (CCTV); the wearing of religious clothing (such as the headscarf) and symbols (such as the cross); circumcision; methods of crowd control; the prevention of human trafficking; the preservation of privacy, especially for celebrities; and the legality of pre-nuptial agreements and success fees for lawyers.
