This volume draws on a wealth of international sources and studies in its analysis of the ‘transitions’ young students make as they move on from their secondary schooling. It identifies how these transitions are planned for by policymakers, enacted by school staff and engaged with by students themselves. With data from a range of nations with advanced industrial economies, the book delineates how the policies relating to these transitions need to be conceived and implemented, how the transitions themselves are negotiated by young people, and how they might be shaped to meet the varied needs of the students they are designed to help. The authors argue that the relationship, often complex, between what schools provide in the way of preparation, and the ways in which students take up what is on offer, is the crucial nexus for understanding the experience of transitions by young people, and for enhancing that experience. With a host of case studies of transition policies themselves, as well as evaluative data on how they were received by the school leavers whom they were designed for, this valuable addition to the educational literature deserves to be read by all those with roles in preparing the young for their journey into a complex adult world full of pitfalls as well as opportunity.

Book excerpt: Are students in Newfoundland and Labrador who have diagnosed reading/writing related learning disabilities being effectively prepared to meet the demands of post-secondary studies at Memorial University? This work uses a phenomenological approach in an attempt to answer this question. Currently, Newfoundland and Labrador is making use of the Pathways framework to deliver services to students with exceptionalities (e.g., learning disabilities). However, there have been concerns raised about the effectiveness of the use of this framework. In this work, six Memorial University students - all diagnosed with reading/writing related learning disabilities - share their high school and Memorial University experiences. Their insight provides valuable information regarding the strengths of the Pathways framework and what is working well as well as where improvements are needed.

This book argues that this conventional wisdom is wrong and is, itself, harmful to a significant number of children and youth. The presumptive view is based largely on overgeneralizations from research with infants and very young children raised in extremely deprived environments. A careful analysis of the available research supports the use of high-quality residential care as a treatment of choice with certain groups of needy children and youth, not a last resort intervention. The nature of high-quality care is explored through child development theory and research and two empirically supported models of care are described in detail. It will be of interest to all scholars and students of child development, child welfare, youth work, social work and education as well as professionals working within these fields.
