Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Opportunities in Chicago In the fall of 1910 representatives from a number of the larger educational agencies of the city of Chicago met with representatives of the Chicago Association of Commerce to devise means of increasing the efficiency of the educational work in the city. It was recognized that in the city of Chicago there are many libraries, museums, colleges, and other institutions of learning founded for the use of the people, which might considerably enlarge the utility of their public service. To develop these opportunities a central board was established, known as The Council for Library and Museum Extension. The work of the Council is outlined along two lines: publicity and co-ordination. Firstly, it is realized that the educational activities of the city must be called to the attention of the public more clearly. A centrally directed campaign of publicity has been planned to arouse the interest of the public in the educational opportunities freely offered at its very doors. The second task proposed lies in the coordination of the educational work of the city. It is believed that some work is unnecessarily duplicated; that many fields, worthy of attention, remain undeveloped, and that certain lines of work can be generally increased in efficiency. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Failing schools. Underprivileged schools. Just plain bad schools.” That’s how Eve L. Ewing opens Ghosts in the Schoolyard: describing Chicago Public Schools from the outside. The way politicians and pundits and parents of kids who attend other schools talk about them, with a mix of pity and contempt. But Ewing knows Chicago Public Schools from the inside: as a student, then a teacher, and now a scholar who studies them. And that perspective has shown her that public schools are not buildings full of failures—they’re an integral part of their neighborhoods, at the heart of their communities, storehouses of history and memory that bring people together. Never was that role more apparent than in 2013 when Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced an unprecedented wave of school closings. Pitched simultaneously as a solution to a budget problem, a response to declining enrollments, and a chance to purge bad schools that were dragging down the whole system, the plan was met with a roar of protest from parents, students, and teachers. But if these schools were so bad, why did people care so much about keeping them open, to the point that some would even go on a hunger strike? Ewing’s answer begins with a story of systemic racism, inequality, bad faith, and distrust that stretches deep into Chicago history. Rooting her exploration in the historic African American neighborhood of Bronzeville, Ewing reveals that this issue is about much more than just schools. Black communities see the closing of their schools—schools that are certainly less than perfect but that are theirs—as one more in a long line of racist policies. The fight to keep them open is yet another front in the ongoing struggle of black people in America to build successful lives and achieve true self-determination.

Book Education Policy for the 21st Century

Download or read book Education Policy for the 21st Century written by Lawrence B. Joseph and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Amid widespread concern that schools are failing to prepare students for workforce participation, higher education, and the economic and technological challenges of the twenty-first century, public school reform efforts across the nation have focused increasingly on standards, performance, and accountability. A particularly critical question involves improving educational opportunities for children in poverty and for other ""at-risk"" students who represent an increasing proportion of public school enrollment.Education Policy for the 21st Century examines a range of key issues in standards-based education reform. Contributors focus on educational trends and issues in metropolitan Chicago, state education policy in Illinois, lessons of Chicago school reform, and standards-based, systemic reform in other states. The volume also includes chapters on standards and assessment in school accountability systems, effects of school spending on student achievement, and ""building-level"" obstacles to urban school reform.Presenting valuable data and a variety of perspectives, this book illuminates both the challenges and opportunities presented by standards-based education reform."
