Book In Search of the Lost Orient

Download or read book In Search of the Lost Orient written by Olivier Roy and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olivier Roy is one of the world's leading experts on political Islam. But he is not only a scholar—he is also a traveler. Roy's keen and iconoclastic insights emerge from a lifetime of study combined with intrepid exploration through Afghanistan and Central Asia. In this book-length interview, Roy tells the lively and colorful story of his many adventures and discoveries in a variety of social and political settings and how they have come to shape his understanding of the Islamic world and its complex recent history. In Search of the Lost Orient is a candid, personal account of the experiences that led Roy to challenge his youthful ideas of an untouched, romanticized East and build a new intellectual framework to better understand and cohabit with the religions, politics, and cultures of the East, West, North, and South. In conversation with Jean-Louis Schlegel of the French magazine Esprit, Roy offers insight into the key themes of his career. Roy's immersion in the complexities of many Central Asian territories started him on his critique of the idea of an essentialized Islam. Alongside tales of backpacking from Paris to Kabul, his Afghan decade during the Soviet invasion, and official travel to post-Soviet Central Asia in the 1990s, Roy reflects on the nature of political and humanitarian engagement in this part of the world. He recounts his formative years, education, and developing political commitments and speaks to his evolving place within France's shifting intellectual and religious cultures. This book outlines Roy's lifelong practice—a combination of deliberate research goals and chance encounters—that examines Islam, immigration, and, more broadly, the future of cultures, religions, and secularism in the face of globalization. Both a significant intellectual autobiography and a compelling travelogue through some of the world's pivotal places, In Search of the Lost Orient offers a striking testimony to the many facets of an exceptional thinker.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia's own Orient examines how intellectuals in early twentieth-century Russia offered a new and radical critique of the ways in which Oriental cultures were understood at the time. Out of the ferment of revolution and war, a group of scholars in St. Petersburg articulated fresh ideas about the relationship between power and knowledge, and about Europe and Asia as mere political and cultural constructs. Their ideas anticipated the work of Edward Said and post-colonial scholarship by half a century. The similarities between the two groups were, in fact, genealogical. Said was indebted, via Arab intellectuals of the 1960s who studied in the Soviet Union, to the revisionist ideas of Russian Orientologists of the fin de siècle. But why did this body of Russian scholarship of the early twentieth century turn out to be so innovative? Should we agree with a popular claim of the Russian elites about their country's particular affinity with the 'Orient'? There is no single answer to this question. The early twentieth century was a period when all over Europe a fascination with things 'Oriental' engendered the questioning of many nineteenth-century assumptions and prejudices. In that sense, the revisionism of Russian Orientologists was part of a pan-European trend. And yet, Tolz also argues that a set of political, social, and cultural factors, which were specific to Russia, allowed its imperial scholars to engage in an unusual dialogue with representatives of the empire's non-European minorities. It is together that they were able to articulate a powerful long-lasting critique of modern imperialism and colonialism, and to shape ethnic politics in Russia across the divide of the 1917 revolutions.

Book Schooling in East Asia

Download or read book Schooling in East Asia written by R. Murray Thomas and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schooling in East Asia: Forces of Change focuses on the condition and backgrounds of formal and non-formal education in several East Asian countries, as well as the identification of the factors that have inspired the educational systems that these countries have taken up. The book takes into consideration the backgrounds of the educational system in Japan and China, noting the different social structures that were prevalent there. The text explains how leaders of every social structure have a great influence on the form of education of their people. Relatively, the development of the educational system in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, North Korea, and South Korea is discussed. Educational policies, purpose of education, educational administration, and curriculum development are also considered. The text also gives emphasis on the forces that influenced the change in the educational system in these countries, including the educational attainment of teachers, teaching materials, curricula, and teaching methodology. A comparative appraisal of the educational system of these countries is also presented. The book is an important reference for scholars who are involved in promoting education, particularly curriculum development and implementation of schemes aimed at improving education.
