Book Educational Resources in the British Empire

Download or read book Educational Resources in the British Empire written by Tony Lyons and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impact of the Lesson Books of the National Board of Education in Ireland in the nineteenth century. The author contextualizes the books used in national schools as well as across the wider British Empire: in doing so, he highlights the influence of the religious, social, political and cultural realms of the time. Firmly grounding the volume in its historical context, the author goes on to explore the contemporary moral climate and social influences, including imperialism, morality, rote-learning and socialization. Through meticulous analysis of each Lesson Book, the author traces the evolution of education in Ireland as a reflection of contemporary society, as it changes and transforms in line with cultural, religious and social changes. This pioneering and comprehensive volume will be of interest and value to students and scholars of education in Ireland as well as education in the British Empire more widely.

This book was released on 1995-08-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Book I Brought the Ages Home

Download or read book I Brought the Ages Home written by Charles Trick Currelly and published by . This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Brought the Ages Home is the intriguing story of how a boy born in southwestern Ontario and trained for the ministry became one of Canada's great archaeological pioneers and museum-builders - nothing less than a homegrown Indiana Jones.Described by scholar Dennis Duffy as the Royal Ontario Museum's own "Genesis narrative," I Brought the Ages Home is a lively, adventure-packed memoir that traces Currelly's life from his childhood in Exeter, Ontario, to Victoria College in Toronto, and on to Egypt, Crete, and Asia Minor, where heestablished his reputation as one of the era's most energetic and passionate collectors of antiquities. Later chapters describe Currelly's work as the first director of the Royal Ontario Museum of Archaeology and how he "brought the ages home" to the corner of Bloor Street and Queen's Park inToronto. General readers and students of archaeology and museology alike will treasure this behind-the-scenes account of the making of one of Canada's great cultural institutions. This new edition includes a special afterword by Dennis Duffy of the University of Toronto that sets Currelly's autobiography in a modern context, as well as the original introduction by Northrop Frye. The result is a book that is at once an engaging autobiography and unique insider's perspective onthe formative years of a cultural cornerstone that, with its recent renovations, is once again the focus of national attention.

Book Places to Grow

Download or read book Places to Grow written by Lorne Bruce and published by Libraries Today. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core of the book revolves around the shifting nature of Ontario’s political landscape. In many ways this is a story of successive governments, ambitious politicians, diligent bureaucrats, and endless library reports straddling the decades. Their aim appears to have been making even better a system that, despite weaknesses, was clearly the best in Canada. Three distinctive trends emerged in Ontario librarianship after the 1930s: first, a growing sense of professionalism in librarianship; second, an enhanced sense of belonging to a pan-Canadian library movement that in 1946 would result in the formation of the Canadian Library Association; and third, a heightened awareness of the competing demands of high culture and popular culture. Public libraries became an important vehicle for promoting community, albeit with competing visions of “space and place,” as Canada generally and Ontario specifically experienced post-World War II immigration and the baby boom. As libraries approached the 21st century, the concerns of digital formats and the all-encompassing Internet intertwined to alter the book-centric "bricks and mortar" world of libraries. Nonetheless, public libraries were well placed to survive this new threat, just as they had with the challenges of radio, television, and telecommunication challenges in the 20th century.

Download or read book Taking the Air written by Paul Kopas and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Taking the Air, Paul Kopas takes a comprehensive approach to the policy aspects of the management of parks and protected areas. He scrutinizes the policy-making process for national parks since the mid-1950s and interrogates the rationale and policies that have governed their administration. He argues that national parks and park policy reflect not only environmental concerns but also the political and social attitudes of bureaucrats, citizens, interest groups, Aboriginal peoples, and legal authorities. He explores how the goals of each group have been shaped by the historical context of park policy, influencing the shape and weight of their contributions.
