Book Education in Sierra Leone

Download or read book Education in Sierra Leone written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a decade-long civil war, Sierra Leone witnessed an unprecedented surge in school enrollments at the primary and then the secondary levels. Committed to the Education for All objectives, the government further encouraged greater access to school. The country must now negotiate the transition from postwar recovery to regular delivery of education services. The main tasks ahead include reaching the remaining out-of-school children and improving the quality of the learning environment and, ultimately, of learning outcomes. Success will depend on the unrelenting, strong commitment of the government, the capacity of providers to effectively deliver education services, and a sustainable financial framework.

Book Primary and Secondary Education in Sierra Leone

Download or read book Primary and Secondary Education in Sierra Leone written by Collier, Ebenezer and published by Sierra Leonean Writers Series. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial education was instituted in Sierra Leone as a consequence of the activities of British philanthropic and missionary bodies from the late 19th to mid 20th century. It was largely in the hands of Christian missionaries introduced in the form of evangelism and as part of Western missionary enterprise. Such education basically ignored the achievements and contributions of the indigenous populations and for the most part, did not cultivate the African student's self-esteem and pride. The author gives details of policies, programmes and statistical outcomes. It is important, particularly for policy makers, as it may serve as input to the debate on future education policy development and has the potential for contributing to research literature on implementation of educational policies. Sierra Leoneans should access the previously lacking and relevant knowledge of the development of education during the fifty years of Independence, as presented in this book. As such, it will also be a valuable resource for college and university lecturers.

Book Mastering Business Administration in Education and African Politics The Sierra Leone Chapter

Download or read book Mastering Business Administration in Education and African Politics The Sierra Leone Chapter written by Mohamed Sannoh and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering Business Administration in Education and African Politics (the Sierra Leone Chapter) This is a revised and improved edition of your book, and as I have already been told, it is quite up-to-date with far more relevant information that address education, educational business, and political issues in Africa in particular, and how these are disturbing educational developments, especially in sub-Sahara and also with suggestions for improvements. According to Mohan Kaul, the co-chairman of Commonwealth Business Council, giving the challenges ahead, governments have realized that it is beyond their capacity and means to achieve the task of improving education for all. However, Patrick Dlamini, Chief Executive of Development Bank of South Africa, sited what has gone wrong with sudden growth of private schooling outside state control. The government is having problems of retaining seasoned teachers. Private schooling is poaching the best of brains from the public schooling system, and the government is left with poor-quality teaching and inexperienced teachers because now the private sector has taken the crme de la crme. How do you balance that? But business is business, and business is about getting the customers what they want and satisfying them most. If African governments are unable to provide what people prefer most, people have the right to choose from existing alternatives so that they can spend their hard earnings on what they want and what can satisfy them most as long as they have the ability and willingness to pay for them. That is the dictation of free-market philosophy. Mohamed Sannoh, Methodist Boys High School, Kissy Mess Mess, Freetown.

Book University Student Protests and Political Change in Sierra Leone

Download or read book University Student Protests and Political Change in Sierra Leone written by Samuel Benjamin Hinton and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is generalized around the topic of university student protests and political change. The dearth of scholarly work on issues that are related to education was one reason for this study. This scholarly analysis of the dynamics between university students and autocratic political and military governments is significant in that regard. Much of Sierra Leone's educational history has been forgotten because the pursuit of such studies was considered to be a luxury.

Book Belonging in Changing Educational Spaces

Download or read book Belonging in Changing Educational Spaces written by Karen Monkman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impacts on personal and professional, local and global forms of belonging in educational spaces amidst rapid changes shaped by globalization. Encouraging readers to consider the idea of belonging as an educational goal as much as a guiding educational strategy, this text forms a unique contribution to the field. Drawing on empirical and theoretical analyses, chapters illustrate how educational experience informs a sense of belonging, which is increasingly juxtaposed against a variety of global dynamics including neoliberalism, transnationalism, and global policy and practice discourses. Addressing phenomena such as refugee education, large-scale international assessments, and study abroad, the volume’s focus on ten countries including Japan, Sierra Leone, and the US demonstrates the complexities of globalization and illuminates possibilities for supporting new constructions of belonging in rapidly globalizing educational spaces. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in international and comparative education, multicultural education, and educational policy more broadly. Those interested in the sociology of education and cultural studies within education will also benefit from this volume.

Book ICT and Changing Mindsets in Education

Download or read book ICT and Changing Mindsets in Education written by Kathryn Toure and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate is no longer whether to use information and communication technologies (ICT) in education in Africa but how to do so, and how to ensure equitable access for teachers and learners, whether in urban or rural settings. This is a book about how Africans adopt and adapt ICT. It is also about how ICT shape African schools and classrooms. Why do we use ICT, or not? Do girls and boys use them in the same ways? How are teachers and students in primary and secondary schools in Africa using ICT in teaching and learning? How does the process transform relations among learners, educators and knowledge construction? This collection by 19 researchers from Africa, Europe, and North America, explores these questions from a pedagogical perspective and specific socio-cultural contexts. Many of the contributors draw on learning theory and survey data from 36 schools, 66000 students and 3000 teachers. The book is rich in empirical detail on the perceived importance and appropriation of ICT in the development of education in Africa. It critically examines the potential for creative use of ICT to question habits, change mindsets, and deepen practice. The contributions are in both English and French.
