Book Educational Attainment of 1980 High School Sophomores by 1992

Download or read book Educational Attainment of 1980 High School Sophomores by 1992 written by John Tuma and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data from the fourth follow-up to the High School and Beyond survey were analyzed to identify patterns in the educational attainment, employment outcomes, and family formation of the 1980 sophomore class in 1992. Those members of the 1980 sophomore class who set high goals in high school tended to have higher average levels of educational attainment 10 years after leaving high school than did those who had lower postsecondary expectation. Regardless of respondents' socioeconomic status or performance on standardized tests, those who delayed entry into postsecondary education were less likely to earn a bachelor's degree or higher. Earnings were significantly related to level of educational attainment. Married respondents earned more than those who were never married or divorced. Respondents' voting rates in the 1988 elections were positively associated with educational attainment. More than 95% of those surveyed valued success in work and having steady work, strong friendships, and better opportunities for their children, whereas only 56% felt that having money was important. Approximately half of the respondents had at least one child by 1992, and nearly 10% had three children. (Forty-six tables/figures are included. Appended are a glossary, technical notes, and nine essay standard error tables.) (MN)

Book America s High School Sophomores

Download or read book America s High School Sophomores written by Kenneth A. Rasinski and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1993 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of high school sophomores in 1980 and 1990 compares the experiences of students in the two cohorts, identifying changes in in-school and out-of-school activities, academic achievement, self-concept, values, plans, and aspirations. Similarities and differences between the two groups are documented using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88) and High School and Beyond (HS&B, 1980). HS&B and NELS:88 sophomores are marked by basic demographic differences, including the smaller size of the NELS:88 1990 cohort, reflecting the baby bust of the 1970s, and a higher proportion of racial minority and poverty status sophomores in 1990. NELS:88 sophomores also reflect the influence of various waves of school reform since the late 1970s and early 1980s. Overall, the comparison paints a pictures that is in most respects encouraging in its portrayal of the high school academic orientation and postsecondary expectations of the 1990 sophomore class. Positive changes, however, are typically small or moderate in magnitude. Among the findings are: (1) general and college preparatory program placement has increased, at the expense of vocational program placement; (2) patterns of extracurricular participation changed especially in musical activities (31% in 1980 to 22% in 1990) and in hobby clubs (21% in 1980 to 7% in 1990); (3) changes in sophomores giving high importance to particular life values (e.g., marriage and family 83% rating this as very important in 1980, 72% in 1990); (4) small but statistically significant increase in the number of females aspiring to traditionally male-dominated non-professional occupations (15.6% in 1980 versus 18.% in 1990). Sixteen tables and 13 figures present data from the 2 studies. Three appendixes contain information about the survey sample sizes, standard errors, and other methodological and technical information. Appendix A contains an additional 20 data tables. (Contains 46 references.) (SLD)

Download or read book Toward Resiliency written by Laura Horn and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 1998 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined whether or not student, parent, and peer engagement factors that contribute to at-risk students' success in graduating from high school continue to be important in making the transition from high school to postsecondary education. The data set used was the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, which included 1994 data obtained two years after students' scheduled high school graduation. At-risk students exhibited two or more of six risk factors, including "family in the lowest socioeconomic quartile" or "held back a grade". Analysis used alternative statistical methodology, specifically regression analysis and the "odds ratios" produced by this procedure. Key findings indicated that: (1) students whose parents frequently discussed school-related matters and/or had high educational expectations were much more likely than other students to enroll in postsecondary education; (2) students who reported that most or all of their high school friends planned to attend college were far more likely to attend themselves; (3) participating in college preparation activities such as gathering information about financial aid increased the odds of enrolling in postsecondary education; and (4) moderate- to high-risk students participating in college outreach programs were more likely to attend college. Appended are a glossary and technical and methodology notes. (Contains 11 references.) (DB)
